Written By Ken HulseyIf you've been keeping up with my coverage of the Los Angeles Rams over the past few years, you likely know I’ve had my fair share of criticism regarding their uniform changes in 2022. I've maintained that the redesign missed the mark, especially since there was no real need for a complete overhaul. It would have been a no-brainer to return to the classic uniforms from the '80s that fans cherish—and even those who don't root for the Rams seem to appreciate. Most NFL supporters recognize those uniforms as some of the best in the league, and I firmly agree. When the Rams relocated back to Los Angeles, all they had to do was abandon the St. Louis Rams look and revive the old Los Angeles style. A simple fix, right?
That said, I found myself anxious over the past couple of weeks leading up to the debut of the team's new Nike-designed Rivalries Uniform. There's a part of me that hoped they would pay tribute to those nostalgic uniforms, even if deep down, I doubted it. Today, the Midnight Mode Rams uniforms were unveiled, and once again, I felt like they missed the mark. My immediate reaction was simply "WTF!"—what is this chaotic design?
I wanted to give it a fair assessment before sharing my thoughts. Here’s the honest breakdown: I actually think the helmets are great. The new horn design looks sharper against the ultra dark blue background than it does on the standard blue helmets. I also appreciate the ultra dark blue uniform and pants. Initially, I wasn’t a fan of the white numbers and letters, but they've started to grow on me, which is a plus.
Now, onto the element that throws everything off—why the lighter blue sleeves? They do not fit the overall concept and detract from the uniform's intent. It would have been much better to keep the sleeves in dark blue. Unlike this lighter shade, yellow sleeves with a dark blue horn design would have been a significant improvement.
The team won’t wear these uniforms until November 16th against the Seahawks, giving them some time to refine the look before then. I truly hope the Rams take this opportunity to make some much-needed adjustments.
