During training camp, buzz surrounded quarterback Stetson Bennett, hinting at a resurgence that mirrored the form that propelled Georgia to back-to-back national championships and caught the Rams' eye, leading to a fourth-round draft selection in 2023. On Saturday night, that buzz turned into reality. Bennett showcased poise and confidence, guiding the Rams to a thrilling 31-21 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. From the outset, the former Bulldog commanded the Rams' offense like a seasoned pro. He skillfully threaded passes through the Cowboy defense, impressively connecting with Rams receivers. One standout moment came during a pivotal 4th down, when he delivered a perfectly placed 39-yard pass to Xavier Smith, setting up the Rams' first touchdown—a two-yard plunge by Blake Corum. On the following drive, Bennett showcased his athleticism by rushing for a crucial first down, leading to another touchdown by Corum, this time from four yards out. The Rams were suddenly up 14-0, and it was clear they meant business.
Defensively, the Rams came out firing on all cylinders. Cowboys quarterback Joe Milton III struggled to find open targets, and Dallas could only muster a measly one yard on their first ten plays. As the game progressed, it became evident that the Rams were the superior team. Bennett continued to shine by throwing two touchdown passes—one to rookie Brennon Presley and the other to backup running back Cody Schrader, who was a force on the ground, racking up 59 yards on just five carries.
As the preseason winds down, tough decisions loom for the Rams, who boast impressive depth across multiple positions. Bennett’s stellar performance has put him firmly in the spotlight, while running backs like Schrader, Ronnie Rivers, and Jordan Waters make the competition fierce. The receiving corps is equally exciting, featuring standouts like Smith, rookie phenom Konata Mumpfield, Drake Stoops, and veteran Britain Covey, all of whom delivered exceptional plays.
On defense, linebackers Tony Fields II, Shaun Dolac, and Pooh Paul Jr. emerged as key players, alongside rookie safeties Malik Dixon-Williams and Nate Valcarcel, who led the team in tackles. And let's not overlook cornerback Cam Lampkin, whose spectacular touchdown-saving interception solidified his case for a roster spot.
Training camp had hinted at intriguing position battles and the potential for young talents to challenge veteran roles, and last night's thrilling showcase validated that excitement with standout performances on the field. The Rams are gearing up for an electrifying regular season!
