As the Third Quarter was winding down this afternoon at University Stadium, it seemed like the new Lobo football coach had gotten the memo. Traditionally, the team would start strong, get fans excited, and then follow that up with a heartbreaking collapse—often losing in spectacular fashion. This pattern, unfortunately, has been part of the New Mexico Lobo Football legacy for many years. However, as the fourth quarter kicked off, something felt different. The Lobos appeared determined to actually secure a win this time around.
With the Lobos holding a slight lead of 17-16, Idaho State mounted a drive and running back Tytan Mason pushed through from three yards out, putting the Bengals back ahead at 22-17. They then attempted a two-point conversion, but the Lobo defense stepped up and prevented it. The Lobos quickly regained possession, and just three minutes later, a one-yard run from Damon Bankston sent New Mexico back in front once again. The Lobos decided to go for two, and Jack Layne connected with Dorian Thomas, extending their lead.
When Idaho State got the ball back, the Lobo defense proved tough once more, stopping their advance and forcing a punt. Taking control of the game again, the Lobos executed a flawless four-minute drill to march down the field, and Scottre Humphrey's late touchdown secured a 32-22 lead with under two minutes remaining. The Lobo defense held firm once more, allowing the Lobos to run out the clock and clinching coach Jason Eck's first win as head football coach.
It wasn't the cleanest victory, but the Lobos defied expectations and showed resilience when it mattered most!
