In a thrilling showdown on Saturday, the New Mexico Lobos dominated the Utah State Aggies with a spectacular 33-14 victory in Mountain West play. D.J. McKinney stole the spotlight, dazzling fans with two impressive touchdowns, including a sensational 49-yard punt return that kicked off the scoring frenzy. Early in the second quarter, he added to the excitement with a powerful 1-yard touchdown run, setting the stage for an electrifying first half performance.
But that was just the beginning for the Lobos (5–3, 2–2). They showcased their prowess with a safety and a booming 41-yard field goal from kicker Luke Drzewiecki. Quarterback Jack Layne found Cade Keith in the end zone with a precise 40-yard touchdown pass, propelling New Mexico to a commanding 26-7 lead at halftime.
In the fourth quarter, Damon Bankston put the icing on the cake with a thrilling 41-yard touchdown run, wrapping up an impressive outing where he rushed for 84 yards on 13 carries. Layne was sharp throughout the game, completing an impressive 17 of 22 passes for 183 yards and a touchdown. Keith had a standout performance, reeling in seven catches for a remarkable 104 yards.
Utah State (4-4, 2-2) didn’t go down without a fight. Miles Davis made his mark with a stunning 64-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, showcasing his speed and agility, while quarterback Bryson Barnes connected with Braden Pegan on a 13-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter. Davis led the Aggies with 110 rushing yards, while Pegan amassed 108 receiving yards, contributing to a hard-fought game.
Defensively, the Lobos were relentless, with CJ McBean snagging an interception and the squad recording three sacks, effectively shutting down Utah State’s passing game to just 164 yards. New Mexico outgained the Aggies, racking up a total of 407 yards compared to Utah State's 306, and they never looked back, securing their fifth victory of the season!
