I have often noted that the strength of Louisiana comes from its people. The folks down here are hardworking, polite, loving, and God-fearing. They greet you with a smile and genuinely want to know how you are; it’s not just lip service. If you are looking for good people, look no further than the Pelican State.
For the most part, the people of Louisiana attend church regularly—if not every Sunday. Their grandparents went to church, their parents went to church, and so they do too. Afterward, the family often enjoys some good old-fashioned Southern cooking together. It is a matter of tradition as much as it is of religion; it’s simply what you do.
It has been discussed at my church that a major hurdle to reaching people in this region is that attendance is often out of obligation rather than a genuine desire to seek the word of God. No matter what sermon a pastor delivers, the congregation has often heard similar messages before, and the true substance of the teachings can fall on deaf ears.
Of course, this is not always the case. There are still those who come to church seeking the word of God and studying the scriptures to build a closer relationship with the Creator and to enact positive changes in their lives.
The backbone of any church is its small groups, where like-minded believers can come together to study the faith and learn more about it through personal interaction. Here at Journey Church in Pineville, Louisiana, we have such a group called The Coffee Club. It is a special place where even first-time visitors are treated like long-time friends. More than just a gathering to watch a video and answer discussion questions, it feels like a family sharing personal insights on various subjects.
Participants often bring their own personal struggles and experiences to the table without fear of judgment or ridicule. No matter what is expressed, there is no place for prejudice or malice here. This is a group of true believers in Jesus Christ with one mission: to bring those far from God closer to Him through study, fellowship, and prayer. Everyone's insights and beliefs are valid and can be shared openly.
My walk with Jesus has grown stronger through the study, fellowship, discussion, and prayer I have experienced with this amazing group of believers. I can only pray that my contributions to the group have been as much of a blessing to my fellow members as theirs have been to me.
As you might guess from the name, fellowship in The Coffee Club centers around a good, strong cup of Louisiana coffee. It's true; they really love strong coffee here—it’s definitely not for the faint of heart!
All jokes aside, this group is genuinely made up of loving people who share their personal relationship with Jesus over a good cup of coffee.
The Coffee Club welcomes anyone—married or single—who is looking for a spirit-filled group to learn from and share with to develop a more godly perspective on both life’s hardships and pleasures, ultimately bringing praise and glory to our Savior, Jesus Christ.
We meet every Sunday at 10 AM in Room 1 of Building C on the campus of Journey Church, located at 2900 Donahue Ferry Rd, Pineville, LA 71360. Please feel free to come by and see us sometime!
