Beyond Our Comfort: Let Compassion Light our Path: Supporting Our Neighbors in Need | Miracle Mindset

 Written By Ken Hulsey

Sometimes, when you sit down to write a daily devotional or even a sermon, you may have an idea that has been on your mind for days or hours before you begin typing. As always, prayer and conversations with the Lord are integral to this process. I had initially planned to discuss a serious topic about faith this morning, but upon waking, I felt a more pressing issue weighing on my heart and soul.

Today, much of the country is facing a strong winter storm and frigid temperatures. If you are reading this, it likely means you have power, internet access, or at least cell phone service. Here in central Louisiana, we still have electricity—for now. The freezing rain is coming down quite hard, and I can hear it hitting the window behind me. Right now, I feel truly blessed; I have hot coffee and an electric heater keeping my feet warm. Praise the Lord!

However, during times like this, we should focus less on our own comfort and more on those around us who aren’t as fortunate. There are people in nearby areas who may have lost power, individuals who couldn’t prepare adequately for this storm and might be short on food and water, and those without proper shelter, or no shelter at all. We also need to think about the elderly and sick who may struggle to care for themselves during such events.

Today, I encourage you to check in on family members, neighbors, and anyone you know who might be suffering during this winter weather. It’s time to step out of our comfort zones and serve those in need. At the very least, offer a prayer for the less fortunate, and if you are able, physically check on people. Consider preparing a hot meal for the elderly woman down the street or sharing your extra blankets with the young couple with kids in the apartment nearby—they're the ones with the beat-up car.

If you have more than you need, don’t hoard it—share it. Most of us have faced hard times in our past, and some of us may be going through difficult times now. For those whom the Lord has blessed with some measure of prosperity, it’s our responsibility to share with others. Even picking up the phone to let someone know you care can make a significant difference.

Remember to have faith today and throughout the coming week as Old Man Winter continues to rage. The Lord will provide and help you through the hardships that lie ahead.
