Many of you might know the well-loved spiritual poem, often referred to as Footprints in the Sand. It's a piece that resonates with many and carries a meaningful message. One night I dreamed a dream. As I stood by the tranquil waters of Lake Charles, Louisiana, I was drawn to the sight of a solitary set of footprints in the sand. This moment reminded me of that cherished poem that speaks to the spiritual journey we all share. Often, we may not notice the guiding presence alongside us as we navigate the ups and downs of life, even though Jesus walks right beside us. There are times when He carries us through our most challenging moments, and other times we may feel His absence, leaving our faith to be truly tested.
As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to my Lord.
After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there was only one set of footprints.
This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,
You'd walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me."
He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you.
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you."
In those instances when we cannot perceive His presence or feel the warmth of His embrace, we must lean on a steadfast faith. It is during these moments that we need to trust that, even when we cannot see Him, He is with us, working behind the scenes or clearing our path ahead. No matter what our circumstances may be, we can find comfort in knowing that Jesus is always there, tirelessly advocating for us.
Recently, during a time of devotion and Bible study, I read aloud from 1 Peter: “Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” This passage beautifully captures the essence of a personal relationship with Jesus—He is always present in our lives. In this truth, we can place our trust and allow our belief to flourish.
