Written By Ken HulseyA new year signifies a new beginning. For many of us, it serves as an opportunity to reset our lives. It's a time to reflect on the past year while looking forward to what lies ahead. We often engage in writing down our New Year's resolutions—a list of things we hope to accomplish in the new year. Essentially, these are goals we didn't achieve last year, which we now hope to get right.
Statistics show that most people tend to abandon their resolutions after just a few weeks. For instance, if your goal is to get in shape, you might find your motivation waning within days or weeks. If your aim is to eat better, the allure of burgers is likely to overshadow your commitment to salads and protein shakes before long. So why do we continue this cycle? The truth is, real change is challenging. While we have good intentions, we often lack the conviction necessary to follow through.
Some people turn to online apps that generate a random word for the year, producing phrases like "Believe," "Forgive," or "Simplify." These words can be meaningful and provide a simple focus for the year ahead. We all need something to believe in, someone to forgive—perhaps even ourselves—and there’s certainly value in simplifying our lives. Personally, I’ve chosen a different path; I want to focus on 'getting back to the basics' and understanding who I truly am. I plan to reflect on the aspects of my life that bring me joy and fulfillment, using this reflection to move forward in a deep and personal way. By dedicating time to this, I hope to embark on a journey that offers lasting motivation and inspiration throughout the year, rather than just a few fleeting days or weeks.

This year, as I contemplate resolutions, I’m reminded of a list I saw on Facebook at the beginning of last year. The first item was "grow closer to God." Many resolutions start with such intentions. In fact, this has been a recurring theme in my own lists over the years. While a goal like this may seem commonplace, in this instance, it belonged to Ace Frehley, the guitarist and a founding member of the rock band KISS. I sincerely hope Ace was able to fulfill that aspiration, especially since, as many know, he tragically passed away last year. This serves as a poignant reminder that none of us can predict how much time we have in this world.
I share this not to discourage you but to inspire. The arrival of a new year grants us the chance to start afresh and enact real positive changes in our behavior, relationships, and mindset. Ace was onto something important. Without faith to guide us, we risk falling short of our new year goals. It’s this core relationship with God that grants us the strength to persevere when challenges arise, when our resolve begins to wane, and we lose the enthusiasm we had at the start.
As I look back to reflect, I want to examine how God has influenced my journey thus far. What lessons can I learn from my experiences to help propel me forward? I believe this is a focus we all need if we want to lead lives filled with meaning and purpose.
