'She Rex' Chases Cave Girl Cleavage For Your Dino-Christmas Delight!

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Avery Guerra

Last October I announced that hyper-active film maker, Brett Kelly, was at it again, working on the dinosaur encrusted comedy "She-Rex". True to form, that film is already in the can, and for sale on Amazon, just in time for Christmas.

"She-Rex" is a very 'old-school' slapstick comedy, very much in the vein of the old Abbott & Costello and Ritz Bros films of the 30s and 40s........except with curvy cave girls and dinosaurs.

Kelly may catch some flack for his use of puppets, and stock footage, for his dinosaurs, and for producing a prehistoric comedy while the taste of "Land of the Lost" is still in peoples mouths, but we will cut him some slack.

You have to understand that Kelly really is a retro kind of guy, finding inspiration for his films in obscure old comics and the like. So, a modern take on the out-dated art of slapstick, is right up his alley.

Kelly is, of course, no fool, and his choice of filming his buxom cave girls from an elevated vantage point is a stroke in the films favour.

It is only obvious that Kelly enjoyed the tribal dances of the Amazons from "Xena" as much as I did.

This fact is more than obvious in the films trailer:

Cave girl cleavage, dinosaurs, and redone Ritz Bros skits. I'm sure that If you are a fan of any of that stuff, or the Ringo Star classic, "Caveman", you will want to get your mitts on "She-Rex".

I'm certain that the never resting Kelly has moved on to yet another film project....or projects. Odds are, I will have more on those very soon.

Brett Kelly Pays Homage To Abbott & Costello With 'She-Rex'

Brett Kelly is quite literally a man who never sleeps, eats, or does anything else besides work. He is the poster-boy for hyperactivity.

Granted, I don't really know if Kelly never sleeps or takes a break to down a microwaved burrito, but it would certainly seem as though he doesn't. The man has been cranking out movie after movie for the past couple of years, only taking time off to release his own line of comic books through his Nedor Comics label.

Recently, Kelly has produced the remake of "Attack of the Giant Leeches", the comic book inspired, "The Scarab", the sci fi film, "Iron Soldier", the adventure film, "Pirates: Quest for Snake Island" and probably a few I haven't even heard off.

Now, Kelly has turned his creative eyes towards reinventing the classic comedic styles of Abbott & Costello and Ritz Bros. in his project of the moment ,"She-Rex."

As you can imagine, "She-Rex" is a comedy with dinosaurs in it, a truly unique idea......what?....."Land of the Lost"?.....a comedy with dinosaurs.....Will Ferrell you say......hmmm.

Sorry about that. I was purposely trying to forget that movie ever happened.

Anyway, yes, it's a comedy with dinosaurs, scantily clad cave girls and dim-witted cavemen.

Kelly has stepped out from behind the camera to play one of the bumbling duo that gets lost in a world where time has stood still for millions of years, alongside Ray Besharah. Actress Shawna McShefferey is also being billed as one of the leopard-skinned cave women.

It is interesting to note that Kelly has opted to use a hand-puppet for his T-Rex...or should I say, "She-Rex"? Don't laugh though, hand-puppets have been used in such films as "The Land That Time Forgot" and even by Eiji Tsuburaya, in such classics as "Godzilla" (Gojira) and "King Kong vs Godzilla". Though Kelly's method is a little different, he is placing the puppet in front of the camera with the live actors and scenery in the distance, to make it look like both are in the scene together.

Cult film maker David “The Rock” Nelson used this technique in his films, "Killer Cicadas" and "Attack of the Giant Cicadas!", using real bugs in front of the camera shot against live-action, with mixed results.

If done properly, the puppet Rex is a good, low-budget effects alternative for those who can't afford CGI or the time consuming stop-motion form of animation.

I'm certain that within the time it took me to write this, Kelly has probably already started another movie, or made a new comic book, but let's wait and see how "She-Rex" turns out before we start talking about those.

Here are a few shots from "She-Rex":

Brett Kelly Entertainment Breaks Into The Comic Book Biz

You really have to give credit to Brett Kelly for doing everything in his power to resurrect the comic book character "The Scarab." Not only is he making a movie about the obscure hero that first appeared under the Nedor Comics label way back in 1945, now he has launched a line of comic books featuring "The Scarab" and several other characters from the comic.

Under his, Brett Kelly Entertainment label, the director, who pumps out films in mass, is presently producing four different comics based on "The Scarab". Two of the books feature the series title hero in both new adventures and reprints of the classic comics. There are also 'spin-off' books featuring both, "The Woman in Red", and "Jack of Spades."

Here is a list of the comics with a short synopsis for each:

GOLDEN AGE CLASSICS!

Reprints featuring key characters in our comics and in the SCARAB feature film!

THE SCARAB: GOLDEN AGE CLASSICS

Classic rare tales of the Nedor Comics hero "The Scarab" also features a sneak peek at the Scarab movie!

JACK OF SPADES

Organized crime has someone new to deal with!. JACK OF SPADES is a ruthless vigilante with a personal stake in making sure that crime pays- IN SPADES!

Here is some historical info on "The Scarab" from Wikipedia:

The Scarab was the secret identity of Egyptologist Peter Ward. Ward was actually the reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian high priest; by rubbing his magic scarab ring Ward would instantly transform into the super-powerful Scarab.

Alan Moore revived the Scarab, along with many other Nedor Comics characters that had entered the public domain, for his Tom Strong series. In Tom Strong #12 (June 2001), the Scarab was revealed to have been one of the members of SMASH that had been placed in suspended animation after an alien invasion from the moon in 1969. Awakened 30 years later, the Scarab joined his former comrades in the fight against the alien. SMASH disbanded shortly thereafter, but reformed three years later. The Scarab is a member of the reformed group.

In the Terra Obscura spin-off series, the Scarab allows himself to be bonded with the ancient Egyptian god Thoth in order to control one-time superhero Mystico (who is himself bonded with the god Seth).

You have to wonder how much of a market there will be for these "Scarab" titles? If Kelly fails to re-ignite interest in the character, it won't be from lack of devotion. Not many people would invest this much time and effort into something that they don't truly love. Maybe the time is right for the re-birth of "The Scarab", people will always need heroes, especially in this world that is quickly turning upside down.

Monster X Strikes Back: Attack The G8 Summit And Attack Of The Giant Leeches Coming To DVD!

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Dread Central / Avery Guerra / Undead Backbrain

Japanese monsters always go by about a dozen different names. They normally have more aliases than a two-bit criminal, and the monster we are talking about today goes by Guilala, Girara, and Monster X. If any of those names don't ring a bell, then let me tell you that it is the monster from The Ladders TV commercial. You know, the one with all the little monsters running around causing mischief, then a bigger version shows up and causes real trouble. Yeh, I thought you may have seen it.

Well for those of you who don't follow Japanese monster news, the big guy with the three different names, was the star of his own movie last year called, "Monster X Strikes Back: Attack the G8 Summit." That film was actually a remake of a movie made in 1968. Anyway, if your a fan of the genre, then you probably already knew that, and if your not, then you probably don't care.

Well for those of you who do love big Japanese monsters, like I do, I have great news. Tokyo Shock will be releasing "Monster X Strikes Back: Attack the G8 Summit" on DVD here in America June 30th. According to sources the DVD will feature both an English subbed and English dubbed version. It is unknown if any 'extras' will be included on this release.

The film honestly didn't fair well at the Japanese box office, and critics didn't care for the overabundance of political satire and over-the-top characters. Fans, on the other hand, felt that there weren't enough monster scenes for their liking.

Well now American fans will be able to form their own opinions.

Here is the plot:

"In the summer of 2008, the G8 summit is being held at Lake Toya, a beautiful resort near the volcano in Hokkaido. At the same time, the Chinese rocket falls into Japan, causing the monster to be born from the spore attached to the rocket. The monster, Guilala, moves toward the summit conference site for the pursuit of volcanic energy. Now the world leaders have to terminate Guilala to show their country's prestige. First mission is missile attack by Japan, then Italy, Germany and... Deadly combat between human beings and the monster from outer space continues, but just when everyone starts to give up, two journalists finds a strange group worshiping the traditional "idol" at the lakeside."

If the news of the "Monster X" release wasn't enough, Brett Kelly's remake of the Roger Corman classic, "Attack of the Giant Leeches" will be coming to DVD as well.

Kelly has produced a modernized version of "Leeches" that draws heavily from the original cult-classic.

The director explains, "The remake is loyal in many regards. It's set in modern day and many of the characters are similar, we improved on inter character relations, and of course, the creatures are better. It's sexier, and has many touches that fans of the original will dig."

Originally "Attack of the Giant Leeches" was to be released April 7th, but it has now been pushed back to May 12th.

As I have pointed out numerous times, director Brett Kelly is a movie making machine. To date he has been juggling up to four films at one time. The hyperactive film maker just finished up the remake of "Attack of the Giant Leeches" and is still filming the sci fi based "Iron Soldier", the adventure film "Pirates: Quest for Snake Island" and now the superhero driven "The Scarab."

Well Kelly has just revealed the nemesis for his movie adaptation of the rather obscure 1940s comic book hero, "The Scarab."

Okay, guess what a super-villain that fights a hero called "The Scarab" is called? Come on.....take a crack at it......take a wild guess......no, not Ra......try again.......Anubis.......no, wrong again!

I will just tell you......it's The Sphinx. You should have guessed it. Anyway, The Sphinx is being played by Jody Hauke, who also starred in Kelly's "Attack of the Giant Leeches" and two films about space men, go-go girls and Christian holidays.......don't ask.

Here is a new set of photos from "The Scarab", a couple of which show Hauke as The Sphinx:

New Poster And Behind The Scenes Photos From Attack Of The Giant Leeches

It seems that director Brett Kelly has been getting a lot of press here lately. Well, I guess that would be expected, because he is a hyper little movie making chihuahua these days, juggling several different productions at one time. Presently Kelly is working on "Iron Soldier", "Pirates: Quest for Snake Island", "The Scarab" and a remake of the 1959, Roger Corman cult-classic, "Attack of the Giant Leeches."

Well, Leeches is about to roll off the assembly line on April 7th so Kelly has released a whole slew of brand new 'behind-the-scenes' photos for monster fans around the world to enjoy.

It is important to note that Kelly, unlike most directors who 're-make' classic films, is keeping pretty 'true' to the story of the Corman produced original. The director explains, "The remake is loyal in many regards. It's set in modern day and many of the characters are similar, we improved on inter character relations, and of course, the creatures are better. It's sexier, and has many touches that fans of the original will dig."

Kelly, just like "Monster of Phantom Lake" director, Christopher R Mihm, was raised on the classic monster films of the 50s and 60s, so it would be safe to assume that the director would want to emulate those kind of films.

The director adds, "I love the "classics" and was raised by a dad who loved movies of all sorts. I was weaned on the Universal Monsters and through the trickle-down effect, discovered the 50s monster/scifi flicks. I love them. Leeches is a fun movie with a different twist -- it kind of wanders into Tennessee Williams territory for a while, then comes back to being a monster film. It's a riot."

One of the main improvements that Kelly has made has to do with the actual monsters themselves. Back in 1959 Corman and his production team, in true low-budget style, opted to use floating rubber mats for the leeches, an effect that wasn't very scary even for the late 50s.

This updated version will feature 'hand-puppets' as the monster leeches, again another technique that's roots come from early B movie makers. Probably not as scary as 'life-size', CGI created, mean-eating leeches, but an improvement none the less.

It will have to be seen if indeed Kelly can recapture some of that infamous, "Corman magic" in his re-make of "Attack of the Giant Leeches"? From what the director has said so far, it looks like he is very sincere about producing a tribute to B movie monsters that the fans will want to see.

Here is a whole herd of Leech infested photos from the production:

Brett Kelly Resurrects 1940s Comic Book Hero Scarab For His Latest Film

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources Brett Kelly / Avery Guerra

Director Brett Kelly is out of control. He is pumping out one movie after another. He doesn't even finish one film before he starts another one. Presently he is working on the remake of "Attack of the Giant Leeches", the sci fi based "Iron Soldier", the adventure film "Pirates: Quest for Snake Island" and now the superhero driven "The Scarab."

You can't blame Kelly for wanting to get into the Superhero market. Just about everyone is doing it, and it is big business.....at the box office that is.

Even the most 'hard-core' comic book fans may have trouble remembering the hero Kelly has chosen to make a film about. The Scarab first appeared in Neo Comics 'Startling Comics' series #34 way back in July of 1945.

In fact the character fell into the public domain before Alan Moore revisited The Scarab in 2001 for the 12th issue of his "Tom Strong" series and in the spin-off "Terra Obscura". Before these rare, later appearances, the character hadn't been seen since the 20th issue of "The Black Terror" in 1947.

At this time it is unknown if Kelly plans to use any of these prior stories in developing the plot for his film.

By choosing a very obscure comic book character Kelly certainly will be able to avoid 'fanboy' backlash if he strays away from the original plot from the 1940s. I doubt very seriously if there are many Scarab fanatics out there that need to be worried about when developing this one.

Brett Kelly Is Remaking Corman's Leeches

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Directer Brett Kelly is keeping himself busy these days by working on a remake of the 1959 "cult-classic" Roger Corman film, "Attack of the Giant Leeches." The Canadian born Kelly already has a vast collection of "low-budget" films in his resume including, The Bone Setter, Final Curtain, and My Dead Girlfriend. This modern take on the imfamous public domain classic was written by Jeff O'Brien and stars Mark Courneyea, Kevin Preece, Kerri Draper, Barry Caiger, and Shawna McSheffrey.

B movie fans will recall that the original "Leeches" was a delightfully cheesy mix of gratuitous skin shots and men in rubber suites. This modern version, at least from the outset, looks like it may be more of the same. The above photo kinda tells the whole story, it shows some bikini clad young ladies being terrified by something off screen.......probably by a Leech or one it's victims.

Hot girls in bikinis, giant rubber suited monsters......you know in my mixed up little mind that equals a winning movie combination.....will it fly with the rest of the movie going populous...only time will tell.?
