Johnny Depp Confirmed As The Big Screen Doctor?

It has been rumored for some time now that the long-running British sci fi series, "Doctor Who", was being geared up for big screen movie adaptation. That being said, I don't think that anyone on either side of the Atlantic thought that it would be produced here in America, with a big name American actor in the lead.

That, however, is exactly what the website Tor.com is alleging, and they say that the report has been confirmed by industry sources.

When David Tennant stepped down after last years 'Doctor Who' specials, he had hinted that if there ever was any movies based on the series made, he very much wanted to be involved.

Well, according to these new reports, Russell T. Davies, who is presently developing this movie version of 'Who' has opted to bypass the very popular Tennant for none other than Johnny Depp. A move that will likely stir up a hurricane of controversy among the fan base all over the world.

Granted, this is only a rumor, even though the Tor.com site swears that the info is a confirmed lock, so don't get too worked up ......... yet.

Long-time producer of the television series Russell T. Davies reported that the reason he moved on from the show was due to the opportunity to transform the Doctor to the big screen. “Bringing the Who franchise to the theaters is a regeneration for the character beyond the usual one. A theatrical release has a greater range and can reach millions of more people than just the fans. There will be brand new concepts and the film will be just as adventurous, scary and humorous as the television programme. But none of us working the film will forget what makes the character great and interesting and the long-time fans will not be disappointed because yes, the Daleks make an appearance.”

That piece goes on to reveal that the reported plot for the film revolves around the Doctor and a crew of volunteers traveling through time and space to cure mankind of illnesses brought to Earth by invading aliens (the Daleks, I assume from the above quote).

Johnny Depp, as the Doctor, playing doctor to rid us of alien disease ..........ummm ...... well ........ that might work.

Then again, I would personally rather see Tennant in the saddle again fighting the Daleks, but I'm a huge DT fan.

As for Depp, I know he made a great pirate, but as a Time Lord, I just don't know?

Let's just wait and see if this one has any real merit before we all begin to speculate.

Russell T Davies Talks About The Future In The Latest Issue Of 'Torchwood' Magazine

After the incredible mini-series "Torchwood: Children of Earth", you would think that Russell T Davies would be spent. After all, he has just finished up, what very well may be, the greatest bit of British sci fi to ever grace the small screen. You would think that he would be somewhat frightened about having to come up with new shows that would either equal, or top, the events that transpired during this last season of "Torchwood."

You would think that, but that's not the case at all. Apparently Davies is already mapping out the next episodes of the show and he already has a good feel for how the show is going to move forward.

“I could write you scene one of series four right now”, says Davies. “I know exactly how to pick it up. I’ve got a shape in mind, and I’ve got stories. I know where you’d find Gwen and Rhys, and their baby, and Jack, and I know how you’d go forward with a new form of Torchwood.”

At this point, it will be up to the BBC to determine if the show goes back to an episode-by-episode format, or if the series will continue on like "Children of Earth, as one continuous episode, shown over multiple nights. Either way, Davies is ready.

“If the BBC asked for another 13 one-part stories, that’s what we’d do”, explains Davies, "I’m ready for anything, but I think it works well as one continuous story. But if the BBC decide they want 13 one-offs, I’ll suddenly decide that’s the best format in the world!”

It would be hard to argue with wanting to produce another mini-series event for "Torchwood" after the huge success of "Children of Earth" on both sides of the Atlantic.

Despite the deaths of three of the shows main characters, something that would cripple most programs, the popularity of "Torchwood" seems to be at a high point, a fact that will certainly make the BBC think carefully about the future of the show.

At this point there is no news about 'bumping-up' the filming schedule of the series to try and ride the 'wave' created by "Children of Earth." So far it is business as usual for Davies and his production team. Fans will just have to wait until next year to find out what happens to Jack, Gwen and Rhys.

That time will seem like an eternity for us "Torchwood" fans who were left wanting more after watching "Children of Earth."

Euros Lyn To Helm Doctor Who Movie For 2011?

Plans for the upcoming big screen "Doctor Who" movie will reportedly be 'officially' announced at this years San Diego Comic Con. Reports also suggest that "Torchwood: Children of Earth" director Euros Lyn will be introduced as the man that will helm the project at the convention as well.

It was leaked in late May that "Doctor Who" fan favorite, David Tennant, had signed on to star in, what is reported to be, a series of movies based on the hugely popular television series.

As a matter of coincidence, Tennant, Lyn and "Who" helmer Russell T. Davies were already scheduled to appear in San Diego. Euros Lyn to promote "Children of Earth", and Tennant and Davies to promote the BBC America showings of the new "Doctor Who" specials.

Since "Doctor Who" has become an international sensation during it's latest incarnation, it would only stand to reason that the BBC would choose such a high profile venue, as the San Diego Comic Con, to make their plans known to the world media.

David Tennant, Russell T Davies And The Cast Of Torchwood To Appear At Comic Con

In support of BBC AMERICA’s U.S. premiere of four Doctor Who Specials, the Doctor himself, David Tennant, will appear alongside writer/executive producer Russell T Davies at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego. They will take part in a Doctor Who panel along with executive producer Julie Gardner and director Euros Lyn, Sunday July 26, 10:00-11:00am PT.

David will travel to Comic-Con, fresh from the Doctor Who set, having shot his final scenes as the tenth Time Lord. He and fellow panelists will discuss the latest incarnation of television’s longest running science fiction series and take questions from the floor. There will also be exclusive sneak peeks from the upcoming specials.

Fans can visit the BBC AMERICA booth (#3629) to capture their own photograph alongside part of the Doctor Who set - as well as purchase exclusive merchandise including David Tennant figures.

Fans of BBC AMERICA’s highest rated show ever, Torchwood, which will have just completed the five-part special, Children of Earth, will get to chat with the stars and makers of the show first-hand. Just 48 hours after the last episode, the show makes a return visit to Comic-Con with a panel featuring star John Barrowman, writer/executive producer Russell T Davies, executive producer Julie Gardner and director Euros Lyn, Sunday July 26, 2:15-3:45pm PT.

As part of the same panel, Sunday July 26, 2:15-3:45pm PT, catch the talent from BBC AMERICA’s most buzzed about new sci fi drama, Being Human. Cult comedy favorite and BAFTA-nominated, The Mighty Boosh, comes to Comic-Con for the first time to celebrate the airing of all three seasons on Adult Swim, and the BBC’s DVD release, just two days before the convention begins. Inspired by the Perrier Comedy Award-winning live comedy show, creators-stars Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding, along with actors Michael Fielding, Rich Fulcher and Dave Brown, will be on stage to discuss the magical, bizarre and exciting world of The Boosh, Friday, July 24, 4:45-5:45pm. Prince Charles Snubbed The Doctor

It appears that the "Prince of Wales" turned down an offer to make a cameo appearance on the hit UK television series "Doctor Who". According to reports, "the snub" didn't set too well with the series producer Russell T Davies who called The Prince, "a miserable swine" for not accepting the offer.

Davies comments toward Prince Charles may be a bit harsh and somewhat unwarranted due to the fact that the prince probably never actually saw the offer.

According to a spokesman at Clarence House (The official London residence of The Prince of Wales), the offer was turned it down on his behalf.

"We receive a great many requests and it's impossible to accept them all," a spokesman told the BBC.
