It looks as if Universal is trying to court director Carl Erik Rinsch to helm the remake of "Creature From The Black Lagoon."
Rinsch has made a name for himself as of late, directing commercials for RSA owners Ridley and Tony Scott, who strongly considered him for their "Alien" prequel film.
Rinsch is no stranger to feature films, directing the independent films "The Quiz" (1994) and "Lovely Weather for Rain" (1996). "Creature" will be the second project that the director will helm for Universal, who hired him for the Keanu Reeves samurai epic “47 Ronin” earlier this year.
Production on "Ronin" is set to begin in 2010, so it would be assumed that filming would begin on "Creature From The Black Lagoon" later in the year, or in 2011.
Universal has be covertly working on the remake of the 1954 film, which starred Richard Carlson and Julie Adams, for over two years. A workable script for the film has been around since 2007, and early concept designs for the "Gill-Man" surfaced this past Summer.
Actually, the studio, has been wanting to do the film for almost a decade.
Universal already has producers Marc Abraham and Eric Newman, of Strike Entertainment, along with Gary Ross, whose father, Arthur A. Ross, co-wrote the original.
To quickly summarise the plot, a vacationing couple in the Amazon come across a research team that is studying a rare form of algae that has amazing regenerative properties. A love triangle ensues after the girlfriend falls for the leader of the expedition.
As you can assume, this algae filled lagoon is the home of the "Gill-Man" a throwback to prehistoric times, who doesn't like uninvited quests.
According to those who got a look a the script, the film mirrors the original in many ways, and even includes some of the films most notable scenes, including the infamous 'swimming' scene between the Creature (played by Ricou Browning) and Julie Adams.
It is obvious that Universal holds Rinsch in high regard, or else they wouldn't be pursuing him for such a high profile film. It also says volumes about the director that Ridley Scott would have wanted him for his new "Alien" film.
Hopefully he will be able to deliver the goods as advertised.
