Written By: Ken HulseyOver the past few weeks, I've found myself on an exciting journey while searching for new music. I stumbled upon a genre that’s brand new to me: Retrowave. It's fascinating to see how modern artists have taken inspiration from the 1980s, creating tracks that feel like they belong to that vibrant decade rather than today's music scene. I was genuinely surprised to learn that there are more New Wave bands out there in 2025 than there were back in 1985! As I dove into this musical treasure trove, I quickly realized that I'm just scratching the surface—there's an almost endless list of 80s-inspired sounds waiting for me to explore.
For tonight's New Music Friday Feature, I had a different artist in mind, but then I discovered the fantastic synth-pop duo Bunny X and was instantly captivated by their sound.
Based in New York City, Bunny X draws influences from iconic figures like early 80s Madonna and Depeche Mode. The duo was formed on a chilly December day in 2008 when founding member Abigail Ferguson, inspired by the music of her youth, decided it was time to create original songs. Alongside her partner Mary Hanley, the duo produced a wealth of music from 2008 to 2012, culminating in the 'Lovespy' EP released in the summer of 2012. This collection highlights their best work during that period, with all songs written and performed by Bunny X and produced by Jesse Glick of Guardian Ghost.
Their latest track, "Never Give You Up," draws inspiration from the incredible Narvent and combines elements from phonk, cyberpunk, and retrowave. I can't wait to share more about their music in the future!
Here are a couple more songs from Bunny X:
