We actually have one of these issues in stock!

Some days you're leading the Justice League and saving the world from Brainiac. Others you're wishing Sherlock Holmes into existence and officiating gorilla weddings.

We're less than one week away from getting our hands on issue #1000 of ACTION COMICS. Let’s think about that for a minute. One thousand. One followed by three zeroes. That’s a whole lot of comics. And as you might expect, with that many issues and eighty years of history, our good friend Superman has no shortage of stories to look back on. Sure, some of them are exciting, dramatic, high flying…even romantic. I’d even go so far as to say that most of them are.

But some of them?

Ooooh, boy… Let's just say that with a long life comes plenty of opportunities for things to get weird. And nobody does weird quite like Superman. This is a guy who has a whole planet of villains with the word “bizarre” in their name, after all. For all that we say Superman is all about small towns and wholesome values and apple pie and all that, the dude knows how to get freaky.

So, with that in mind (particularly the apple pie…remind me not to write listicles at lunchtime), let's take a look at some of the silliest, some of the most out-there, most utterly bonkers Superman stories ever told.

Superman #162 (1st Series 1939) July 1963 DC Comics Grade VG

Red vs. Blue – SUPERMAN #162

If you've been reading Superman comics for a while, you might actually be familiar with this story. Back in 1998, Superman was "split" into two different versions of himself, the more famous of the two colloquially known as "Electric Blue" because he was, well, electric blue and had energy powers.

It was the ’90s, okay? Don't think too hard about it.

But what you might not know is that good ol' Electric Blue Supes was actually a call back to a much older story from 1963. In this timeless classic that almost no one remembers, Superman finds himself with just too many high-priority things on his to-do list, so he invents a machine with different forms of Kryptonite that will, ideally, increase his intelligence and inspire him to start knocking the more challenging goals out one by one.

Now, to me, it would seem like someone who can invent a machine like that was already pretty darn intelligent, and that maybe, in a totally different story, Superman would realize that and discover that he doesn’t need the machine after all. He just needs the patent for it along with some investment capital, and he could make billions cranking out intelligence machines. That would be more than enough to hire an entire staff to help him with those goals he wants to achieve.

But no, this isn’t that story. Instead, Superman’s machine splits the Man of Steel into two identical clones—one dressed all in red, the other dressed all in blue—who name themselves, well, Superman-Red and Superman-Blue. Together, they solve the world's problems, resolve a love triangle (Red marries Lois, Blue marries Lana Lang) and otherwise seem to have pretty great and conflict-free lives.

Of course, it all wound up being another out-of-continuity "imaginary story" so none of that actually came to pass. But hey, at least we've still got the ’90s version to look back on fondly, along with my alternate, completely unused machine story, which you all saw here first (just in case that Bendis guy tries stealing it ;) )!

Action Comics #28 - September 1940 Issue - DC Comics - Grade VG

This comic book is in used condition. Comic is complete with cover and all pages attached. This comic has flaws that warrant a VG grade.

Superman, Pep Morgan, Black Pirate (art by Sheldon Moldoff), Three Aces, Tex Thompson (art by Bernard Baily), Clip Carson (art by Moldoff), and Zatara (art by Fred Guardineer). Full-page ads for Superman # 6 and Supermen of America fan club. Half-page ads for New York World's Fair Comics (1940), the Superman radio show, and All Star Comics # 1 and Mutt & Jeff (# 2?).

A series of robberies occurs around Metropolis. Each witness describes the suspect as a muscular strong-man wearing a leopard skin leotard. Daily Planet editor George Taylor sends Clark and Lois out to cover the story. While walking the city streets, Lois spots a billboard advertising a circus that just rolled into town. The main attraction: Herculo, the strong man, who wore a leopard print just like the strong-arm bandit...

The two reporters meet with Mr. Jenkins, the circus owner. He lets Clark and Lois sit in on a show as they talk about the thefts. Jenkins admits that he himself has suspected Herculo, since every town the circus has been to have had similar incidents. Nevertheless, he brings Clark and Lois to meet Herculo, with Clark faking pain as the strong-man squeezes his hand in greeting. Herculo attempts to woo Miss Lane by boasting that he is the strongest man around, which Lois shoots down by saying that Superman could best him any day. Herculo says that he'd challenge this Superman guy to a test of strength, and his friend the circus clown offers to play ref if that ever happens. Clark goes to buy some tickets from Jenkins to give away to some orphaned kids, letting Lois deal with her muscle headed admirer. Once he is out of sight of everyone, Clark secretly sprinkles a fine powder over some bills, a precaution that may help catch the thief later. On their way out of the circus, Lois and Clark come face to masked face with the strong-arm bandit, who grabs the wad of cash out of Clark's hand and runs off. Lois is disgusted with Clark's lack of spine and storms off alone.

Later that same day, Clark and Lois return to the circus accompanied by children from the Metropolis Orphanage to see the show. While Lois and the kids watch the show, Clark slips away to change into Superman. Herculo and the clown are preparing for the show in their tent. Superman uses his X-Ray vision to eavesdrop on them, but he is noticed by Herculo by the shadow he was casting on the tent. The strong-man charges Superman, being flipped on his back for his trouble. The noise brings Jenkins over to see what was causing all the commotion. On seeing Superman and his strongman engaged in a scuffle, the circus' owner is thrilled. He decides to make him part of the act tonight, to which Superman readily agrees. The audience is given a surprise for the next act: Superman and Herculo in a contest of strength! Herculo puts forth his fiercest moves, but the Man of Steel takes it all in stride. It soon becomes obvious that Superman is the stronger of the two. Not content to leave yet, Superman decides to give the crowd a show in acrobatics and aerial feats.

Bruce controls the ship that was mentally guided by the Leader and returns to Earth. Thunderbolt Ross orders to fire missiles to destroy the rocket. One of them is successful. Hulk and the Rhino (unconscious) fall to the desert. Meanwhile, the Abomination wakes up after 2 years in a coma. The army confuses him with the Hulk and locks him in a super cell. Ross frees the Abomination with the condition of killing the Hulk. The villain accepts and meets the Hulk in the desert. Both titans unleash their power. The Abomination is shocked and amused to find out in convesation the Hulk had knocked him out and he has been in a coma for two years. The Abomination turns his back on the Hulk, and in an act of cruel humor, the Abomination tells Hulk that his friend Betty has married Glenn Talbot and gone to Niagra Falls. The Hulk hits the Abomination from behind, knocking him out. Hulk leaps away heading for the Niagara falls. The honeymooning Glenn Talbot and Betty are oblivious to the events taking place. They think that Bruce Banner is dead.

Adventure Comics #463 - May 1979 Issue - DC Comics

"Urtumi the Image Eater" Starring the Flash (Barry Allen). Script by Cary Bates, pencils by Don Heck, inks by Joe Giella. "Mind Over Murder!" Starring Deadman. Script by Len Wein, pencils by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, inks by Frank Chiaramonte.

Vashnu succeeds in persuading Kronsky to remove the helmet and abandon his dreams of power. But now the helmet becomes sort of a hot potato as it exchanges several hands in the next several minutes. First, Deadman occupies Inga Brand's body, dons the helmet, and uses it to fashion him a new, solid body. However, the body disintegrates after a few seconds. Then, another man appears and steals the helmet, but Deadman occupies his brother's body, which causes the man to be thrown into a tank full of water, and die when the helmet explodes. With the helmet destroyed, Kronsky (who invented the helmet) feels that he has nothing left now, but Inga reassures him that he has a place with his new family, the circus people. Deadman, angered, asks Rama Kushna why was he taunted with freedom from his ghostly state. Rama appears as a face on a tree, and tells Deadman that he must adjust to his ghostly gift, and warns him that it may last for an eternity. Deadman screams in frustration.

Action Comics #471 - May 1977 Issue - DC Comics

Clark Kent returns home to find a strange, elderly man in his apartment. This is Jackson Porter, Clark's new neighbor. Porter claims that he came over to introduce himself and found the door open, but Clark grows suspicious. After an awkward conversation, Porter returns to his apartment.

Later, a strange phantom is seen terrorizing the streets of Metropolis. Morgan Edge is angry that the phantom was seen floating near the apartment of his "star reporter" Clark Kent, and Kent failed to put together a story on the incident. Clark decides to investigate the matter on his own as Superman.

He soon discovers that the mysterious phantom is actually Faora Hu-Ul, an escaped criminal from the Phantom Zone. Superman tries fighting her, but Faora escapes. She then flies to the apartment of Jackson Porter, where she has been masquerading as the ghost of Porter's late wife, Katie.

The All-Star Squadron was a series that featured the Justice Society fighting both crime and Nazi superagents alongside various Golden Age-era independent heroes of their once-native Earth-Two universe in the time period of 1942, with the expanded team of heroes called the All-Star Squadron -- a concept later used in the DC Animated Universe's Justice League Unlimited series with modern-day heroes. Following the Crisis On Infinite Earths, Mekanique would show up and cause the new post-Crisis All-Star Squadron history to be held back until her mission was completed in 1942, then with the releasing of that history, the Golden Age versions of Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Green Arrow, and Speedy would be forever erased. It was followed by a sequel series called The Young All-Stars, which focused on a subgroup of young teenagers with powers and abilities similar to those of the erased Golden Age heroes mentioned.
