How can you have any Venom if you don t have your Spider-Man?

Ever since Sony announced plans to produce a film based on the Marvel villain, Venom, fans were confused. The main source of confusion stems from the fact that, as part of the Marvel Studios/Sony deal, Spider-Man is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while the “Venom” film is clearly not. So, how can you make a film based on a Spider-Man villain, without Spider-Man? Especially considering the origin of Venom is so closely tied to Spider-Man, himself. The truth is, we still don’t know.

One of the other questions surrounding the film is what exactly Venom will look like, keeping in mind Spider-Man’s absence. You see, Venom is modeled after Spider-Man, who briefly wore the famous “black suit” symbiote, down to the spider symbol on his chest. This has led some to speculate that Venom might not actually “suit up” in the film, and Tom Hardy, who plays Eddie Brock, aka Venom, will hardly resemble the Marvel character. This is after a reddit rumor went around that someone saw a rough cut of the film and noticed a distinct lack of Venom in the “Venom” movie.

Well, Tom Hardy took to Instagram to clear this confusion up himself. And let’s just say, Hardy is a man that gets straight to the point. His post reads, as follows (spelling/punctuation errors and all):

Details on Carnage’s role in the Venom movie

From the moment that Sony first announced it would be launching a shared Spider-Man spinoff universe with a Venom movie, it’s been rumoured from several sources that Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock will find himself doing battle with Cletus Kasady, a.k.a. Carnage.

So far, there’s been no confirmation on this front; we’ve heard nothing about casting for Carnage, and there wasn’t any hint on the character in the first teaser trailer (but hey, we didn’t get to see Venom either, so…)

Well, if a new rumour from That Hashtag Show is to be believed, Carnage will indeed make an appearance in the film, although he won’t be the main villain. Instead, we’ll apparently get a Cletus Kasady appearance towards the end of the movie, possibly as a post-credit scene, where he’ll be under the care of Dr. Ashley Kafka, who introduces him to Eddie Brock. And, similar to his comic book origin, we’ll then see an offshoot of the symbiote making his way towards Kasady, setting the stage for a Carnage appearance in a sequel or spinoff.

Valerio Schiti: I suppose that the main reason for this change is the new readers—at least that’s what [GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY writer] Brian Bendis said! The new generations of readers have a totally different idea of Venom; most of them don’t even know that once he was a bad guy. In this moment nobody perceives him like a monster, everybody knows that he’s a hero, a good guy with a super cool costume that can do amazing things so why don’t we concentrate on them? Brian noticed that new way of thinking about the character and imagined this totally different version. And everybody knows that if there’s someone with a great intuition for what is cool, that man is Brian Michael Bendis.

Spider-Man and Johnny Storm are heading towards the deserted Caribbean Island where Venom had retired after which, he thought that he had killed Spider-Man. The reason they were going to meet this powerful foe of Spider-Man is because an even more powerful foe has been terrorizing the city of New York, by killing many of innocent people. Spider-Man brought with him a sonic gun because the symbiote suits are suceptible to sound. After the first confrontation between Spider-Man and Eddie Brock, Eddie doesn't believe that this is the real Spider-Man. He still attacks him and starts to turn into Venom.

Venom film has "darker" potential than Spider-Man, says Alex Kurtzman

Alex Kurtzman has discussed the "darker" potential of Venom.

The writer-director commented on his plans for Sony Pictures' Amazing Spider-Man spinoff.

"The idea is that you can do things with Venom that you can't do with Spider-Man," Kurtzman told MTV.

"Venom is the representation of every line that will get crossed. He's a much darker character."

Sony is also planning a Sinister Six film starring Spider-Man villains, with Drew Goddard attached to write and potentially direct.

Details and a release date are yet to be announced for Venom.

Gary Ross In Line To Write And Direct "Venom"

Though Gary Ross is already knee-deep in writing "Spider-Man 4", he is also in negotiations to both write and direct a spin-off movie about one of the web-slinger's most infamous foes, "Venom".

Following the story line from several Marvel Comics mini-series runs from the 1990s, "Venom" will be featured as an anti-hero who will stand as a protector of the innocent.

Topher Grace, who played Peter Parker's rival Eddie Brock in "Spider-Man 3" in which "Venom" had a rather brief appearance, is already signed to star in Robert Rodriguez's "Predators", so many are speculating that he will not be reprising the role.

Though Disney now owns Marvel Entertainment, Columbia Pictures owns the movie rights to "Spider-Man" and "Ghost Rider", including all the characters associated with both comic book series. Likewise, 20th Century Fox owns the rights to all the "X-Men" heroes and villains, plus everything "Daredevil" and "Fantastic Four" related.

While Sam Ramai is set to start shooting "Spider-Man 4" in 2010, writer Jamie Vanderbilt is already busy developing the stories for "Spider-Man 5" and "Spider-Man 6".
