Bill Willingham Introduces Vampirella's Newest Foe in Special!

In a can't-miss standalone tale coming this September, just in time for Halloween, Vampirella meets the newest member of her spine-tingling rogues' gallery!

Multiple Eisner Award-winning writer Bill Willingham (Fables, Robin) writes the Daughter of Drakulon for the first time ever in Trial of the Soul. Willingham is joined by artist Giuseppe Cafaro (Catwoman, Suicide Squad), colorist Andrew Dalhouse, and letterer Carlos Mangual. The blood-filled cherry on top is the haunting cover by Bart Sears (Justice League, Blade).

This extra-length special tale asks the question, "Does Vampirella have a soul?" New character Prester John has made it his mission to determine this and enact judgment on her. If she passes the test, she will be spared. If not, he must destroy her. No matter how charming he finds her...

"I always found Vampirella so intriguing and I've always had a crush on vampires so this one-shot for me will be definitely a great chance to test my skills with this classic character," said artist Giuseppe Cafaro. "Plus, with Bill at the script, I'm sure that this will be an amazing journey! I always loved what he did with Fables and the Sandman Universe! Can't wait to show fans what we are doing!"

Based on the legend of the medieval Christian leader of a lost wealthy African kingdom, the Prester John of the Vampirella universe represents a force that our heroine has occasionally found herself contending with. Based on a design by Willingham, John is portrayed as a handsome young man, though he's lived well over 1,000 years. When not hiding among man, he dons an ornate armor made in the forges of Heaven. It pairs with his sword, which is actually on loan from Saint Michael the Archangel, who will reclaim it for the battle of the end times. Alongside his armaments and nigh-immortality, Prester John possesses great strength and can tap into a Godspeed allowing him to practically teleport.

Beyond the titular question of her soul, is Vampirella friend or foe to the forces of Heaven? Is Prester John a "villain" or something much more complicated, just as fans' favorite vampiri? And if either survives their encounter, when could they meet again?

VAMPIRELLA: TRIAL OF THE SOUL is solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ July 2020 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in September 2020. Comic book fans are encouraged to preorder copies of the issue with their local comic book retailers. It will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital, ComicsPlus, and more!

First Look At Mars Attacks Red Sonja

From Dynamite Entertainment

Fans have seen them attack fin-headed cops, iconic rock bands, and fellow denizens of the red planet, but now Dynamite presents Mars Attacks Red Sonja!

John Layman (Chew, Detective Comics) and artist Fran Strukan (The Shape of Elvira) will chronicle the untold tale of when the dastardly Martians invaded Hyrkania during the Hyborian Age. Joined by colorist Valentina Briški and letterer maestro Taylor Esposito, the team will unravel this forgotten piece of history. How do the steel and savagery of Red Sonja stand up against the advanced weaponry and science of the big-brained baddies? Only one way to find out, by reading the ACK-ing book!

"This is a book I actively pushed Dynamite to do, and I bugged them and bugged them until they finally approved it because I wouldn’t go away," said John Layman. "I’m a HUGE fan of both properties, and the idea of mixing violent barbarian sword & sorcery with ultra-violent over-the-top retro sci-fi is simply irresistible to me."

Fran Strukan added, "It’s really amazing the amount of luck a person can have. Growing up with certain characters and then one day - WHAM! You’re doing a crossover between some of the most beloved things from your childhood. All of that, and with a veteran writer (and fellow decapitation lover) John at the helm, it’s impossible to express the amount of excitement I have for this book."

Layman returns to both franchises here following a celebrated run elsewhere on the Martian meanies and the fondly remembered early Dynamite crossover Red Sonja/Claw. He brings those connections (be on the lookout for Easter eggs!) and over 25 years of experience writing, editing, and more in comics. From his earliest days editing some of the innovative bestsellers at Wildstorm to his smash hit, multiple Eisner-winning creator-owned Chew.

The explosive first issue features a crop of covers by the coolest creators. A man very well-versed in depicting the She-Devil With a Sword is Lucio Parrillo, who highlights the menace of the Martians. Fan-favorite Dustin Nguyen (Batman, Descender) uses plenty of red and his signature style, and we're not just referring to Sonja's hair. Arthur Suydam evokes the classic era of science fiction that birthed the Mars Attacks franchise originally. Coming a long way from having fan art featured in an issue of Red Sonja (Vol 4 #7), is Luca Strati showing off a victorious Sonja. The legendary Barry Kitson swings through with a wraparound bursting with dynamism. And last but certainly not least is an incentive variant by Alan Quah homaging the classic trading cards.

MARS ATTACKS RED SONJA #1 is solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ June 2019 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in August 2020. Comic book fans are encouraged to preorder copies of the issue with their local comic book retailers. It will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital, ComicsPlus, and more!

From Mill Creek Entertainment

The Birth of Ultraman Collection, containing some of the best episodes of the original “Ultraman” series, is coming to Blu-ray July 10 from Mill Creek Entertainment at $25.99.

It will include both the original Japanese language and the classic English dub audio tracks plus The Birth of Ultraman — Ultraman pre-premiere special, the very first appearance of the hero.

The set will be exclusively sold on DeepDiscount as part of the launch of a dedicated “Ultraman” storefront that will offer up all of Mill Creek’s current Blu-ray and steelbook releases in addition to other “Ultraman”-related merchandise and products.

The exclusive Blu-ray release also features art created by Alex Ross, which is also featured on The Rise of Ultraman cover for Marvel Comics, and Tsuburaya Production’s recent collaboration with the debut issue releasing September 2020.

The release is part of Mill Creek Entertainment’s license of the entire available “Ultraman” back-catalog via international distribution company Indigo Entertainment, from the team at Tsuburaya Productions.

“The Birth of Ultraman Collection” includes the following episodes:

Episode 1, “Ultra Operation No. 1,” in which the story begins as the heroic alien Ultraman pursues the space monster Bemular to Earth, leading to a fateful encounter with Shin Hayata, an agent of the SSSP;
Episode 2, “Shoot the Invader,” in which Ultraman’s iconic foe, Alien Baltan, makes its first appearance in a tale narrated by Ide, the SSSP’s genius inventor;
Episode 19, “Demons Rise Again,” in which an ancient time capsule unleashes the red-skinned monster Banila and its blue-skinned rival Aboras, who wage a titanic battle in the National Stadium;
Episodes 26 and 27, “The Monster Highness” Parts 1 and 2, the only two-part Ultraman story that features the Ancient Monster Gomora, who escapes captivity and overwhelms Ultraman as it rampages towards Osaka;
Episode 33, “The Forbidden Words,” in which even Ultraman may not be able to stop Alien Mefilas when he tries to convince a boy to give him the Earth; and
Episode 37, “A Little Hero,” in which Ide suffers a crisis of faith as the Friendly Monster Pigmon warns that the evil creature Geronimon is reviving an army of monsters to destroy Ultraman and the SSSP.
The Birth of Ultraman — Ultraman pre-premiere special aired in Japan on July 10, 1966, one week before the series premiere. The stage show was filmed before a live studio audience and introduced viewers to the story, cast and characters of “Ultraman.” This July 10 event on television is now celebrated annually and known throughout the world as “Ultraman Day.” Never-before-released in America, the special is presented in black and white (as originally broadcast) in standard definition with Japanese audio and English subtitles.

“Ultraman” premiered on Japanese television on July 17, 1966. While the series was still in production, the North American rights were licensed to United Artists, who in-turn commissioned voice director Peter Fernandez (“Speed Racer”) to supervise the English dubbing of the show. The English-language version was syndicated to American television in 1967 and went on to air in various markets across the country into the early 1980s.

The Five-Issue Goosebumps: Secrets of the Swamp Debuts in September, Illustrated by Yasmin Flores Montanez

IDW Publishing welcomes Marieke Nijkamp, New York Times bestselling author of This Is Where It Ends and writer of DC’s The Oracle Code graphic novel, to pen the latest entry in the long-running children’s horror series, Goosebumps!

Written by Nijkamp, the monthly Goosebumps: Secrets of the Swamp comic book miniseries will debut in September, featuring the artwork of Yasmin Flores Montanez and colors by Rebecca Nalty.

The five-issue Secrets of the Swamp introduces Blake, a twelve-year-old girl who is shipped away to her weird aunt’s home in Fever Swamp for the summer. Expecting her weeks to be filled with video games, mosquito bites, and a whole lot of nothing, she instead finds herself in a spooky turf war between wolf hunters and werewolves. With monsters on both sides, it’s up to Blake to use all of her gaming skills to escape alive.

“I have fond memories of Goosebumps terrifying me as a kid, and I’m thrilled to get to play around in Fever Swamp now. Secret is a story all about finding your place in a new town, figuring out who your friends are, and dealing with the deadly monsters that lurk in the shadows. With Yasmin bringing the characters to life in such a wonderful way, I hope you’ll get caught in its snare too. Of course, in Fever Swamp, all secrets have sharp teeth, so best be careful you don’t get bitten,” says Nijkamp.

“I’ve wanted to work with Marieke for a long time, and I’m absolutely thrilled that we’re doing a Goosebumpsbook together. Secrets of the Swamp captures the same magic of the stories that terrified and delighted me as a kid, and I think everyone’s going to love the book that she, Yasmin, and Rebecca are creating,” says editor Chase Marotz, who is co-editing the book with Elizabeth Brei.

New Miss Fury Original Graphic Novel Live On Indiegogo

Miss Fury, one of the most historically influential characters in comics history, returns from Dynamite in a new original graphic novel available only on Indiegogo.

Available right now to preorder, the book is helmed by the multiple Eisner nominated Billy Tucci (Shi, Sgt. Rock) and features the work of artist Maria Laura Sanapo (Red Sonja and Vampirella Meet Betty and Veronica) with colorist Ceci de la Cruz and letterer Mindy Lopkin.

"I’m beyond excited to play a role in bringing back one of the most influential characters in comics history," said writer Billy Tucci. "Miss Fury will battle the Third Reich from the skies over New York to behind enemy lines in occupied France as Marla Drake is charged with capturing and bringing to justice the sadistic Nazi commander of the infamous 'Joy Division.' More importantly, I take it very, very seriously to honor Miss Fury’s creator, June Tarpé Mills, and to bring to light one of the most heinous yet forgotten episodes of the Holocaust."

“I’m proud to continue the legacy of the great woman June Tarpé Mills on this marvelous character Miss Fury," said artist Maria Sanapo. "Her contribution to comics history is immense, with her talent and feminine touch. Each page has been a blast for me and working with Billy is fantastic!”

Miss Fury, real name Marla Drake, dates back to 1941 and holds the esteemed distinction of being the first female hero created by a woman in the medium. Writer and artist June Tarpé Mills chronicled the tales of the original "Cat Woman" for a full decade in newspaper strips, with the character also licensed at the time for a Marvel comic book. Mills and her heroine were more ahead of their time than even their notable first indicates. Mills dropped her first name when signing the strip to disguise her gender. When Marla was depicted wearing a bikini in a 1947 strip, 37 papers dropped the feature in protest.

Tucci and Sanapo continue that legacy of boundary-breaking in this new tale. Titled "Joy Division," the story delves into that eponymous deep dark secret of the Nazi regime. Through the 1940s, several concentration camps featured brothels wherein Jewish women were forced to work as prostitutes for soldiers. This rarely discussed, dark tragedy of history remains starkly relevant today. Miss Fury and her team of Black Furies have discovered this cruel phenomenon and are going to kick some Nazi ass, in an all-female "Inglourious Basterds" style mission. Joy Division actually fits perfectly into a continuity gap in the original storylines, taking place in the summer of 1944. The book also has its blessings from the Mills family.

"This is a story Billy has wanted to tell for years," said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. "Some fans may remember it was originally going to be periodicals, but there were scheduling issues. Then Billy wanted to change the format and take it directly to fans, as he's done so successfully with Shi. Billy wanted to bring in Maria, but she was busy working on our fun crossover with Archie Comics, so we pushed this back until she was available. With Ceci and Mindy joining too, everyone has finally been able to get back to this project, and it's become all the more personal and better for it. I can't wait for fans to read this incredible story!"

The original graphic novel will be a complete 100-page story. Three alternate covers by Billy Tucci are available across paperback and hardcover options. Collectors can also get copies signed and remarked by Tucci. There are alternate covers by Sanapo and Asha Kishna. Add-ons include multiple lithograph prints, a trading card set, and a challenge coin. One of the coolest items is a water bottle inspired by the WWII fighter plane "nose art" that featured American icons like Miss Fury. For retailers who love Miss Fury, Billy Tucci, and want to support this, there is a wholesale pledge level. There are bundles to get each cover or to get everything with a sweet customized ammunition box display. And backers can stay tuned for potential stretch goals to be revealed...

Barbara "Barb" Gordon is a fictional character appearing in comic books published by DC Comics and in related media, created by Gardner Fox and Carmine Infantino. Introduced as the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon, Barbara Gordon made her first comic book appearance in a story published in Detective Comics #359 titled "The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl" (January 1967).

In KISS: Blood and Stardust, an immortal cabal is taking the lives of innocents and the only ones who can stop them are KISS! The only problem…they are dead. And now they have to make a deal with a demon to save their souls and return to Earth to fight evil!

"KISS was the soundtrack of a time in my life where I had tons of ambition and few rules. Endless nights in dive bars in New York City, watching sunrises on the rooftops of Brooklyn. I might have discovered them in the aughts, but I was filled with the spirit of the 70's,” remarked author Bryan Hill. “The 1970's was a special decade, a decade of fame and magic where guitar riffs and drum solos were your co-pilots and the devil MAY have cared, but he couldn't stop your shine.

“As one of rock's most celebrated bands, KISS continues to be a staple in the comic book industry,” said Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite Entertainment. “Bryan Hill has really built a name for himself, so we’re thrilled to have him penning KISS: Blood and Stardust as part of our fall lineup.”

The origins of KISS comic books date almost as far back as the inception as the band itself, having been an integral part of comics culture since their 1977 appearance in Howard the Duck #12 and 1978's Marvel Comics Super Special: KISS. Today, nearly 40 years later, Dynamite Entertainment is the proud home to the comic book series KISS, KISS: The Demon, KISS/Vampirella, KISS/Army of Darkness and now KISS: Blood and Stardust.

“Fans can expect to relive that magic, terror, and power in these pages. They should prepare to see the mystical occult power that weaved itself into pop culture, characters in league with it, celebrity-filled with it, and a story of the innocent lives caught in the balance. I've always wanted to tell a story about a band that saved the world. Now I have my chance," added Hill.

The debut issue of KISS: Blood and Stardust features a wide selection of cover variants, providing fans and retailers a chance to collect the whole set! The cover artwork features the talents of Stuart Sayger (The Walking Dead), Rodney Buchemi (Legenderry Red Sonja), Maria Sanapo (DC Bombshells), and a classic KISS photo cover, respectively. Two Atlas Editions will also be available for fans wishing to have their issue signed by writer Bryan Hill or signed by rock legend Gene Simmons!

As America's #1 Gold Record Award-winning group of all time (in every category), KISS is easily one of rock's most iconic and influential bands. The Rock N Roll Hall of Famers have released 44 albums and sold more than 100 million albums worldwide.
