In May, the Inverness Courier published an eye-catching story about George Spicer and his wife, who, during a scenic drive around Loch Ness, noticed something extraordinary gliding across the water. Spicer described it as “the nearest approach to a dragon or prehistoric monster that I have ever seen in my life.” This became the first time a sighting was referred to as a monster, coining the now-famous title: the Loch Ness Monster.
An amateur photographer has captured an eerie photo from the shore of Loch Ness which could encourage those who believe in tales of a monster living beneath the surface of the lake.
The image was taken by David Elder at Fort Augustus, at the south-west end of the 23-mile-long body of water in northern Scotland.
It shows a long bow wave apparently caused by some sort of disturbance on the surface of the loch.
The 50-year-old photography enthusiast insists the only thing that could have caused it is 'a solid black object under the water'.
Mr Elder, from East Kilbride in Lanarkshire, was able to take still photos as well as filming a video of the mysterious scene.
'We were at the pier head at Fort Augustus and I was taking a picture of a swan at the time,' he said.
'Out of the corner of my right eye I caught site of a black area of water about 15ft long which developed into a kind of bow wave.

ASHEBORO, N.C. — A candy bar and thermal imaging equipment are said to have captured pictures of an elusive creature whose existence has been debated for centuries.
According to WGHP-TV, Mike Greene, a former fraud investigator, claimed he has proof Bigfoot was lurking in the Uwharrie National Forest in North Carolina over a year ago.
Greene is now sharing the video that, he said, can't be anything other than Sasquatch.

Chupacabra Monster May Be Mitey-er Than First Imagined AOL News
As stories continue to emerge from Mexico and the American Southwest of a legendary creature known as the chupacabra (Spanish for "goat sucker"), identifying at least a few of these animals may be a more simple task.
Some researchers now believe the mysterious four-legged killer and livestock blood sucker may, in fact, be coyotes infected by tiny, eight-legged parasites, or mites.
"It's easy to try and convince people that something might exist because of fears and speculation, but it's a whole lot harder to prove that something doesn't exist," said Robert Roy Britt, editor-in-chief of LiveScience.com.
"It's a wonderful explanation and I'm glad there's scientific proof for what we already knew, but it doesn't explain a lot of the reports from Puerto Rico and other places," said Loren Coleman, director of the International Cryptozoology Museum in Portland, Maine.
The strange physical characteristics of these creatures have been seen on videos and photos taken of the hairless coyotelike animals in rural areas.
“I’ve lived here all my life and have never seen such a thing,” said Crooked Run resident Stephen Summers, 44.
Summers claims he saw an ape-like creature Tuesday afternoon walking down an electric right-of-way, a short distance from Arnoldsburg along State Rt. 16.
“Everybody is laughing at me, but I saw it. I swear to God,” Summers said.
Summers (shown right) was traveling south in a car, looking out a passenger side window when he claims he spotted the Big Foot or Sasquatch-like creature on a hillside across the West Fork of the Little Kanawha.
“It was tall, about nine feet, hairy and the prettiest black I’ve ever laid my eyes on. I could see between its’ legs. Its’ legs looked as big as five-gallon buckets,” Summers said.
Summers said the driver of the vehicle couldn’t stop because a car was “on his tail,” indicating the driver and a passenger didn’t see the creature, “But they believe I saw it.”
“I’ve been in the woods all my life. I wasn’t drunk,” he said, again proclaiming, “God in heaven, be my witness, I saw it. I’ll take it to my grave.”
Summers said he had heard about other sighting in the Arnoldsburg area a few years ago.
“I know a lot of people won’t believe me, but I wanted them to know anyway,” he concluded.
25th anniversary of Congo search for Loch Ness Monster-type creature LoughboroughEcho.net
THIS week marks the 25th anniversary of when Territorial Army Sgt Joe Della-Porta, then 22, went off to the Congo in search of a mythical Loch Ness type monster - the Mokle Membembo.
The monster, a dinosaur type creature, was said to have been sighted many times, but never photographed. Joe was part of a four-man team taking part in the five-month expedition.
Ian Monckton was just trying to enjoy a romantic weekend with his fiance Tracey Gordon when the pair had a run-in with the Loch Ness Monster.
The couple were enjoying a drive around Loch Ness, when Ian decided to pull over to the side of the road to....enjoy the scenery.
The romantic mood was suddenly broken by a load thrashing in the water. Monckton quickly exited the vehicle to get a look at what was making the commotion. Using the cars headlights, he took several photos of an object that was just a few meters away.
Only after the couple had returned to their lodging did they realize the significance of what they had captured with their digital camera. They had a set of photos of "Nessie!"
Here is Monckton's account of the incident:
"I had the passenger window open as I was smoking at the time and as we pulled into the lay-by there was an rustling and a splash. It sounded as if a Mini had landed in the water. That's how loud it was."
"We both looked at each other and I said 'What the hell was that'? It wasn't a small splash like a piece of debris or a stone falling into the loch. It sounded like a car or a motorbike had rolled into the loch."
"I got out of the car and walked up to the edge using the light from the car headlights to see where the edge of the loch dropped away and taking snaps with the camera so the flash let me see we where to tread."
"After a while we continued back to Homewood, both wondering what the hell we had heard and joking about Nessie," Ian added.
"However, when we looked back at the photos I had taken up to and looking over the cliff we now genuinely believe there is something in this, there is clearly a very large shape in the water that looks aquatic a few metres out from where I was standing and you just see the tips of the trees lower down the slope to the loch in the photo."
Although the young couple believe that they may have captured the elusive monster on film, Mikko Takala, who runs a webcam network for Nessie watchers worldwide, has a different opinion.
After reviewing the photos Takala gave his verdict, "I think this is probably a dead fish, maybe a flatfish."
"Obviously this photo is taken in the dark and camera flashes can accentuate details that would otherwise be barely noticeable in daylight conditions."
Whether a dead fish or a legendary monster, Ian and Tracey will have quite a tale to tell their children some day.
