Here we go again......
Another crackpot has emerged from the tall timber with a claim that they were the person who created the "monkey-suite" used in the famous Bigfoot footage shot by the late Roger Patterson, and as usual someone is giving them TV time to tell their story.
Philip Morris, a Kalamazoo, Michigan costume maker, will appear on the show, "Myths & Legends", tomorrow night on TV Land, with a claim that he was hired by Patterson to create a "Neanderthal" costume for a practical joke.
According to Morris, Patterson contacted him in 1967 with a specific type of costume in mind, "The man on the phone, who said his name was Roger Patterson, wanted to buy a gorilla suit and asked if it looked like a real gorilla. I told him that it looked like a Hollywood gorilla, but he said he wanted something that looked more like a Neanderthal. What he wanted was Bigfoot.''
Morris also states that he got another call asking him how to hide the suits zipper and make the person in the suite look larger, ``He asked me to send him some extra fur and asked how to hide the zipper in the back and how to make the person in the costume look larger. I told him to brush the fur over the zipper and use hair spray to hold it, and then get some football shoulder pads and sticks for the arms to give the illusion of being taller, and use stuffing to get more bulk.''
When asked why he waited so long to come clean on the matter Morris had this to say, ``As a costume and special-effects producer, I have an ethical code I have to uphold. I couldn't go out telling secrets and expect magicians to trust me with their props. That is why I didn't say anything. Plus I thought he would come clean in a few weeks.''
Over the past four decades several people have come forward with claims that they were either the creator of the costume or the person in it. None of these people have been able to back up these claims with one shred of evidence, yet the press pounces on them every time.
Some people may remember that a gentleman came forward back in the late 90s with a claim that he was the actor in the suite. That guy turned out to be a homeless drunk looking for a pay-off.
There are also the two Hollywood related stories that have been floating around for decades. One such story claimed that the costume was created by John Chambers, the man who created the make-up for the "Planet of the Apes" movies. The other claimed that the suite was an old prop from the "Lost in Space" TV series. Both of those were proven to be only "urban legends."
I'm not going to step up and call out Morris as a liar, but I do find it a bit fishy that he waited 40 years before coming forward with his claim. He has stated that he thought telling his story would hurt his business, but who wouldn't want to brag about the fact that they had created the "greatest" monster costume of all time! That would certainly be good for the ol' costume business wouldn't ya think?
If you had created a suite that fooled scientists for over four decades........well you would have to be one "bad-ass" costume maker right?
The object in the Patterson video has been enlarged and enhanced using advanced digital software. That enhancement has proven that the creature's mouth and eyebrows move. That's pretty impressive for a suite.
Oh, wait....there's also the matter of the muscle bulge that was discovered on the creatures right leg. Damn that Morris guy thought of everything.
Wait......the creature in the video is a female........impressive.
Oh....almost forgot........no one has been able to imitate the monsters walk.....wonder how a bunch of cowboys pulled that off?
Oh well, Morris says its all fake, so all those scientists are just a bunch of rubes. Glad that's settled.
There were footprints too.......sorry.

Okay...I have been putting more thought into some of the things Philip Morris claimed about the alleged Patterson Bigfoot costume.
ReplyDeleteHe mentioned the use of "shoulder pads". That wouldn't jive with whats seen in the film. Football shoulder pads are bulky and rigid. They would have been easily seen under the suite. Also the object in the film has arms longer than a normal human. The shoulder pads would have raised the shoulders and thereby shortened the arms. That is unless Morris made really, really long arms on the suite. That seems unlikely.
I also think that a stiff row of hair-sprayed fur would have been detected by now.
I just think the whole story falls apart under good old Vulcan logic.
Any Thoughts?
