New Book: "Apocalypse Then"

by Armand Vaquer

A friend dating back to my G-FAN days has published a new book in paperback.

The title of the book is Apocalypse Then (a play on the title of a Robert Duvall/Marlon Brando war movie) by Mike Bogue (ISBN-13: 978-1476668413 and ISBN-10: 1476668418),

The cover is by another friend dating back to my G-FAN days, Todd Tennant.

The book is a look back at atomic science-fiction movies from 1951 to 1967 from both sides of the Pacific.

Here's the synopsis from Amazon.com:
The United States, the only country to have dropped the bomb, and Japan, the only one to have suffered its devastation, understandably portray the nuclear threat differently on film. American science fiction movies of the 1950s and 1960s generally proclaim that it is possible to put the nuclear genie back in the bottle. Japanese films of the same period assert that once freed the nuclear genie can never again be imprisoned. This book examines genre films from the two countries released between 1951 and 1967 including Godzilla (1954), The Mysterians (1957), The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957), On the Beach (1959), The Last War (1961) and Dr. Strangelove (1964) to show the view from both sides of the Pacific."
The book is available for pre-order at Amazon.com.

Godzilla vs The Gryphon - Exclusive Art From Todd Tennant

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Todd Tennant

It has been quite some time since Todd Tennant has blessed us with some of his exceptional artwork from his "Godzilla 94" online comic based on the unused Sony movie script by Rossio and Elliott.

Though we had to wait quite some time, it was well worth it! Tennant has produced what can certainly be called on of his best pieces, an exclusive image of Godzilla taking on The Gryphon, in what will undoubtedly be a battle for the ages.

Look for more monster action in the upcoming pages of "Godzilla 94"!

Fans can also check out more of Todd's artistic skills in the pages of several titles published by Blue Water Comics, who publish a wide variety of books based on classic horror and sci fi franchises.

Hot Off The Press! Page 77 Of Todd Tennant's "Godzilla 1994" Online Comic

Written By: Ken Hulsey

From: Godzilla 2012

Last week I posted some great new artwork from Todd Tennant's "Godzilla 94" online comic, based on Tristar's unused script by Rossio and Elliott, and the fans here, and over at the Facebook group, went gaga.

I mean, they really liked it! Both Todd and I were swamped with e-mails and posts filled with appreciation and praise, along with others wanting to know more about the project.

Todd was more than a little thankful.

Thanks to all the positive response, he has opted to bless us with the newest page from "Godzilla 94", electing to have it premiere here, even before it is added to the "Godzilla 94" website.

If you recall, I mentioned that there was a possibility that Blue Water Comics may be able to publish Todd's "G94" work in graphic novel form. Though I am sworn to secrecy at this point, I will mention that there are 'things' happening on that front, but I can't be specific.

Just keep hoping and praying that things work out. Todd appreciates all the support!

Hot Off The Artists Table - A Brand New Image From It Came From Beneath The Sea....Again!

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Todd Tennant

Some websites brag about getting scoops and exclusives, but what site has ever gotten comic book art straight off the artist's table before?

Comic book artist Todd Tennant, who has been slaving away, producing new art work for his three issue stint on Blue Water Comics "It Came From Beneath The Sea....Again!", literally took the above panels off the drawing table, scanned them, and e-mailed them straight to us late Friday night. How is that for service?

That actually means that we got to see them before Blue Water did.....hope Todd doesn't get in trouble for that.

Here's the description of the action we see in the illustration straight from Todd Tennant himself:

'"Eat some SCIENCE!", a great line written by Clay & Susan Griffith and spoken by "Faust", just one of the 3 brave hero/characters from IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA... AGAIN!

Faust (Spunkmeyer) has just created a really cool looking science-nerd laser gun and tries it out on one of the captive 6- legged Cephalopod "babies" that just broke free in his lab.(...but you'll have to purchase the comic book when it's published later on to find out what happens next ;0)."

Is King Komodo Ready For A Movie Makeover?

Written By: Ken Hulsey

With monster movies being all the rage these days, and both large and small movie studios buying up comic book properties like mad, it would stand to reason that a title like "King Komodo" would start to get some interest as a potential feature film.

Indeed the buzz is starting to heat up and the interest in the property is definitely out there. Indications are that the time is right for a film like "King Komodo". Recent film releases in both Asia and the United States point to the giant monster genre making a big comeback. There have been increasing interest for these films over the past decade with the release of Peter Jackson's remake of "King Kong", Shinpei Hayashiya's latest film, "Deep Sea Monster Raiga" (Japan), Bong Joon-Ho's acclaimed "The Host" (being remade by Universal) and J.J. Abrams "Cloverfield."

The smaller studios have also followed suite as well, and literally dozens of giant monster films have surfaced including Olen Ray and Chris Ray's monster movie "Reptisaurus" and The Asylum's "Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus." The latter film, stirred up quite a lot of media attention, due mainly to the enormous size of the monsters involved and the casting of 80s pop sensation Deborah Gibson.

Artist Todd Tennant explains how he and writer Mike Bogue got together to create the comic book series that has been published in two different genre magazines and became a fan-based favorite around the globe.

"I created the concept and basic design for KING KOMODO a year or so after the turn of the last century, and began sharing my KK illos on the internet. At that time I also began collecting & reading Dennis Druktenis' SCARY MONSTERS magazine. I really liked the articles of one particular SM writer, Mike Bogue, and asked Dennis if he would introduce me to him. He did and we soon were collaborating on a story & characters for a KING KOMODO story-line which later showed in up in the pages of SCARY MONSTERS magazine.

Later on in 2008, Mike and I created a new KK series titled "TALES OF KING KOMODO" for G-FAN magazine, which ran for five issues, and picked up quite a few more fans. In fact, besides North America, KK has a considerable fan-base all over the world; particularly in Japan and France."

Due to the popularity of the character, Tennant believes that the character is ready to make the next step, from the comic book page to the movie screen.

"I believe that the raw power and basic charisma of KING KOMODO would make him a convincing American giant monster, and could transfer successfully from the printed page to the respective screens of movies and DVD players."

Is "King Komodo" about to become the cinematic equivalent of either King Kong or Godzilla?

Monster movie fans have been waiting for some time for a new monster to grace the screen that they could embrace. "King Komodo" may very well be that monster.

Is there a "King Komodo" movie on the horizon? Well, I know a little about that, but I can't say too much at this point.

Let's just say that the people behind the comic are looking for the right people to make it happen.

Stay tuned!

Cape Town South Africa Is Under Attack By Six-Legged Cephalopods!

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Todd Tennant

Okay, before everyone gets all worked up, no Cape Town, South Africa is not really under attack from a bunch of six-legged sea monsters. However, in the pages of issue number three of Bluewater Comics, "It Came From Beneath The Sea..... Again!" it will be.

Artist Todd Tennant, who is taking over illustrating the comic book series starting this issue, was kind enough to send us a sneak preview of his work.

The comics are written by Clay and Susan Griffith, who continue the story from the 1955 Columbia Pictures release, "It Came from Beneath the Sea", which was produced by Charles Schneer and featured the stop-motion effects work of Ray Harryhausen.

Besides being a great artist, Todd may have a promising career as a journalist. Check out the fake news headline and story that he sent along with the art work:

....This is a SPECIAL REPORT from Cape Town, South Africa....

Downtown Cape Town, South Africa is under attack by GIANT 6-LEGGED CEPHALOPODS!

These freaks-of nature appear to be impervious to standard gunfire, but the South African Defense Force are valiantly battling to secure the area nonetheless. These two images are the only visuals we have for now, but there will be more following soon. Stay tuned to Robo Japan News Wire for more details!

Indeed! Stay tuned to the Robo Japan (it's...um Monster Island News now) News Wire for more details about "It Came From Beneath The Sea....Again!" I'm certain that Todd will keep his promise and will be sending over more art work in the very near future.

Oh, before I forget, props to Todd for remembering that the monster in the original movie had 'six' legs, not eight. Although an octopus has eight legs, special effects legend, Ray Harryhausen only used six on his stop-motion model. By eliminating the two legs, Harryhausen saved time and money, plus made his job of keeping track of the leg movements easier. He figured that since the monster spent most of its time in the water, nobody would notice.

The First Look At The Giant Octopus From It Came From Beneath The Sea.... Again

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Todd Tennant

I think that most of the people that read Monster Island News are all too familiar with special effects master Ray Harryhausen's excellent work in the 1955 film "It Came From Beneath The Sea." I am also going to assume that these same readers are very familiar with the giant monster comics that have been produced by artist extraordinaire Todd Tennant. How fitting that Tennant was chosen by Blue Water Comics to illustrate two issues of their sequel to the film entitled "It Came From Beneath The Sea....Again".

Todd was kind enough to send me a copy of the very first illustration of the giant octopus from the comic book. This is the first time anyone, except the people a Blue Water, are getting a look at the monster, so we should all feel very honored to be getting this exclusive!

Fans should be very excited that an artist with the talent and reputation, like Todd Tennant, is starting his stint with Blue Water, a comic book company which is trying to bring horror and monster comic books back into the mainstream.

Expect to see more octo-fun here from Todd in the very near future!

The First Image From Todd Tennant's It Came From Beneath The Sea Again

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Todd Tennant

Todd Tennant was kind enough to send us the very first image from his two issue stint on Blue Water Comics "It Came From Beneath The Sea.... Again."

Hopefully this two issue run for Blue Water will lead to more work for Todd on future releases. Blue Water's president Darren G Davis took a real liking to his artwork in "G-Fan", and has hinted at Tennant doing the art for a future Harryhausen inspired title (possibly "The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms?).

Here is the storyline for "It Came From Beneath The Sea....Again":

In the 1950s, the U.S. Navy encountered and destroyed a gigantic octopus that attacked shipping and wreaked havoc on the west coast of the United States. American forces killed the creature and ended the threat once and for all. Or so they thought. They were wrong. Now, another monster is rising in the warm blue waters surrounding Taru Taru, a speck of land far out in the Pacific. And this time it’s worse than anyone ever imagined.

For those of you who are not familiar with Todd Tennant's resume of giant monster comic book projects let me give you a brief rundown. Todd first came to the attention of monster movie fans through his online comics adaptation of the unmade Tristar "Godzilla 1994" movie. That online comic is still being published by Todd.

Recently, another of his giant monster creations, "King Komodo", had his own comic published in the Japanese sci fi fanzine "G-Fan."

For the past decade Todd has produced several comics and illustrations for both known Japanese monsters and his own unique creations.

Recently Todd opened his own art studio, Tennart Illustrations, to produce more monster inspired art and take on new graphic design projects. Interested parties can contact him at: tennart@charter.net

A Brand New King Komodo Wallpaper From Todd Tennant

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Todd Tennant

Todd Tennant has blessed Monster Island News with yet another image from "Tales of King Komodo." This time around it is a wonderful, full-color, wallpaper that monster fans can use as their computer background.

I don't want to be a 'wet blanket', but you have to admit that good old "King Komodo" is striking a very "Godzilla-like" pose in this image, and that could get the Toho lawyer's panties all twisted. I mean, hey, if they were willing to sue over a big dinosaur in a sandwich add, then anything large and reptilian may be off-limits these days?

On another, more positive note, has anyone else noticed the spring in Todd's step now that he has landed the "It Came From Beneath The Sea Again" gig over at Blue Water Comics?

I can tell that he is smiling ear-to-ear even through e-mail!

Hey, I'm happy for him! He deserves the big break!

Now if only someone would offer me a high paying job writing for some sci fi magazine.....

Todd Tennant To Illustrate Blue Water Comics It Came From Beneath The Sea Again

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Todd Tennant

"Tales of King Komodo" and "Godzilla 1994" artist, Todd Tennant, has just signed on to illustrate the final two issues of Blue Water Comics, "It Came From Beneath The Sea Again.

As you can probably imagine the comic book series continues the story from the 1955 Columbia Pictures release, "It Came from Beneath the Sea", which was produced by Charles Schneer and featured the stop-motion effects work of Ray Harryhausen.

Here is the synopsis from Blue Water Comics:

In the 1950s, the U.S. Navy encountered and destroyed a gigantic octopus that attacked shipping and wreaked havoc on the west coast of the United States. American forces killed the creature and ended the threat once and for all. Or so they thought. They were wrong. Now, another monster is rising in the warm blue waters surrounding Taru Taru, a speck of land far out in the Pacific. And this time it’s worse than anyone ever imagined.

Many of you have followed the numerous attempts that both Todd and I have made to try in generate some sort of interest in bringing a new Godzilla comic book series to Dark Horse Comics. At least Blue Water was open to hearing the idea, and if it wasn't for Toho wanting a large chunk of cash for the rights, they would already be publishing a "G" series.

I don't want to toot my own horn, but I did have a hand in setting this up. A small one.

Congratulations go out to Todd for landing this gig. I'm certain that this will lead to him working on a new Blue Water series in the very near future!

Todd Tennant was cool enough to send us the first page from his upcoming "Tales of King Komodo" comic which appears in G-Fan magazine. This will be the 5th, and final, installment of the comic series.

Todd tells us to expect a very grand finale for the series, which will feature a epic battle between King Komodo and a giant white ape named, "Snowball."

Sounds Awesome!!

Congratulations go out to Todd for producing such a great series.

Look for more published work from Mr. Tennant in the near future. I can't say too much though. I'm sworn to secrecy.

Todd Tennant To Return To Godzilla 94

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Todd Tennant

Todd Tennant has been very busy working on his "King Komodo" comic for G-Fan magazine as of late. However, he has just e-mailed about his returning to work on the online "Godzilla 1994" graphic novel. "G94" has been a real labor of love for Todd over the past few years. In fact the both of us have made several attempts at getting it published by a major comic book label.

That leads me to the little known fact that Todd has had some very preliminary talks with a comics publisher about getting either an artists gig or getting some of his work published. I don't want to say too much at this point. I don't want to jinx anything.

I think that I speak for all of us when we I say just how much I would like to see Todd's work featured as a monthly comic series.

Let's just wait and see, what becomes of all of this.

Fans will have to wait til G-Fan #86 hits the stands to find out who will win this clash of the titans!

The Cage A Special King Komodo Sneak Peak From Todd Tennant

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Todd Tennant

It has been quite a while since I had heard from Todd Tennant, but this morning I was happy to have gotten an e-mail from him. Enclosed with the message was a brand-new sneak-preview of Episode 4 of his "King Komodo" comic series that appears in the pages of G-Fan Magazine. Todd is calling this one "The Cage" and I think it is self explanatory why. Kinda looks like a scene from "Valley of the Gwangi" to me.

Fans will have to wait til G-Fan #86 to find out just how good ol' "King Komodo" gets himself locked-up, and just how he busts out.......monsters always bust out of these things to wreck havoc. You know....King Kong.....Gwangi.....My Ex........

King Komodo's Next Opponent - Meet mScorpio

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Comic book artist, Todd Tennant has sent us yet another exclusive sneak-peak from his "King Komodo" comic that appears in the pages of G-Fan magazine. This brand-new "King Komodo" nemesis is called, "mScorpio", and he is set to make his debut in G-Fan #85. According to Todd we will see the two titans in a battle to the death in G-Fan #86.

Robo Japan readers, however, don't have to wait for a new G-Fan to hit store shelves to enjoy Todd's awesome new creature design.

Honestly, I think I found a creature like that in my shoe once when I lived in Texas.

Keep up the good work Todd, we all love seeing your artwork here!

The Godzilla 94 Trailer - Now With Music And Sound Effects!

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Just like George Lucas, our friend Todd Tennant just can't resist the urge to tinker with his movie projects. Now the talented comic book artist has added sound to his "Godzilla 94" trailer.

For those of you not in the loop, Todd Tennant has quickly emerged as one of the leading giant monter comic book artists over the past decade. Presently his work can be seen in the pages of G-Fan magazine and online at his "Godzilla 94" graphic novel website.

If Todd keeps this up, he will soon be able to make the Godzilla 94 movie that Tristar passed up on himself!

Is This The End Of King Komodo?

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Todd Tennant has sent us yet another sneak preview image from his "Tales of King Komodo" comic that will appear in G-Fan magazine #85 (G-Fan was recently voted as one of the Chicago Tribunes' top 50 magazines.......yeh, really!). The image allegedly depicts the demise of King Komodo. I wouldn't worry too much though. If there is one thing us comic book and sci fi geeks know is that comic book characters and giant monsters never die, and in this case King Komodo is a comic book character that is a giant monster. That being said, I would expect the big guys chance of survival would be about 100%. Of course, we will just have to read the pages of G-Fan #85 to find out for sure.

Todd Tennant's New Godzilla 94 Trailer

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Lately our good friend Todd Tennant has had his "Godzilla 94" online graphic novel on sort of a temporary hiatus while he has been working on the "King Komodo" comic for G-Fan magazine. Well it looks like Todd has been staying up late at night cranking out a lot of new artwork as of late. He has even began to dabble in video as well. Todd has just completed a Quicktime trailer to promote the comic, and for his first venture into the medium it looks pretty slick. Todd explains, "It deals with 2 "looters" (roughly based on characters from the GODZILLA Rossio/Elliott screenplay) and their misadventures with the original American Godzilla. There is also a surprise guest appearance at the end."

There are also several examples of the original artwork Todd used to make the trailer on the site. As usual each of those is the kind of comic book masterpiece that we have come to expect from the great Todd Tennant!

Now, if we could only get a major comic book label to publish this stuff..... ?
