"Plan 9" Cemetery To Be Plaqued Monday

Above, Bela Lugosi in Plan Nine From Outer Space.

by Armand Vaquer

But, on Monday (which is Memorial Day), Platrix Chapter No. 2, E Clampus Vitus will be erecting a plaque at the Pioneer Memorial Cemetery in Sylmar, California.

A number of notable pioneers in Los Angeles history are buried there. It is said that some 600 people are buried at the cemetery, but there's only a few headstones there.

The cemetery was abandoned for a number of years and the tombstones fell victim to neglect and vandalism. In recent years, the cemetery has been under care by historical groups.

The cemetery is noted for a particular movie production: Ed Wood's Plan Nine From Outer Space (1959). The movie was shot around 1956-57, but not released until 1959.

According to IMBD trivia on the movie:
The cemetery used for filming is the Pioneer Memorial Cemetery in Sylmar, CA. It still stands, although many of the grave stones were stolen or vandalized.
Bela Lugosi appears in footage shot just before his death, but with no script in mind. Edward D. Wood Jr. wrote the script to accommodate all the footage shot in a cemetery and outside Tor Johnson's house in the new production. Lugosi was doubled by Tom Mason, Wood's wife's chiropractor, who was significantly taller than Lugosi, and played the part with a cape covering his face.
The cemetery was near Tor Johnson's home.

The plaque dedication will take place at 11:00 at the cemetery at 14451 Bledsoe, Sylmar.

Mr. Lobo Hams It Up On The Set Of PLAN 9

Written By: Ken Hulsey

I ask you, what could be scarier than a horror host with an axe?

Well ..... probably a lot of things, but America's number one horror host took full advantage of some free tine on the set of "Plan 9" to ham it up in front of the camera.

What? ...... no not Elvira? Why would you think this was about her?

No, I'm talking about Mr. Lobo from the nationally televised late-night horror movie showcase "Cinema Insomnia", who plays a major role in the remake of the Ed Wood classic (?) "Plan 9 From Outer Space".

Yes, as I mentioned last week, John Johnson of Darkstone Entertainment is knee-deep in working on the film which also stars Brian Krause, Matthew Ewald, James Rolfe, Caitlin Hill, Matt Sloan & Aaron Yonda.

As for Lobo, well he has landed the coveted role of The Amazing Criswell. Who is Criswell you may ask? Well he was a well-known psychic from the 1950s who was featured in the intro to the original "Plan 9". This time around Lobo's Criswell will do more than just introduce the film, as these photos illustrate, he will be one mean, bad-ass, zombie-killing machine.

Step aside Shaun, move to the rear Ash, Lobo's in town!

Elvira .... pfft, what does she have that Lobo doesn't? Besides those! Hmm some people prefer substance over gazongas ..... well some.

Here are the pics from the set:

Source: Darkstone Entertainment

After the long plotting and preparing from the creators of Plan 9 (The Plan 9 From Outer Space Remake) it is now full steam ahead! Production is slotted to begin March 20th! And as for recent updates to the production… John Johnson (The Director) searched Youtube as a talent base and kidnapped a few of its finest! Ryan Higa (Best Known as Nigahiga), James Rolfe (Best Known as the Angry Video Game Nerd), and Matt Sloan and Aaron Yonda (Best known for the Chad Vader videos) to name a few! Also, with the production gearing up, a film competition is being unleashed!

The Plan 9 Film Competition

Starting Friday, January 7th through Sunday March 20th is the Plan 9 film competition. This is a challenge for filmmakers to join in the Plan 9 explosion and create films to coincide with the motion picture itself!

THERE IS NO ENTRY FEE!

Here is how it works…

Filmmakers have from the 7th till the 20th to make a 60 second to 3 minute short on their take of the original Plan 9 From Outer Space. It can be done in any genre or style. From dark horror to campy comedy, all is welcomed. What we really want to see is the filmmakers show off their talents and love of the original film.

On March 20th all entries will be tallied and ten filmmakers will be chosen to go to the next step in the competition. At this point the ten finalists will be given some of the Plan 9 script and storyline. Then they will have 30 days to shoot a 5 minute movie that would take place at the same time and within the universe of the Plan 9 storyline. Their productions will occur at the same time as the production of the motion picture and their projects will be looked at as sister films to Plan 9!

On May 1st all ten films will be placed on the Plan 9 web site and be voted on by the fans to choose the top five. Those chosen five will be in the extra features on the DVD release! And four awards will be given out…

Best Picture

Best Screenplay

Best Director

And the Chupacabra Surprise! (Award given to the worst film in the competition.)

To join the competition or read more about it please visit Plan 9 http://www.facebook.com/note.php?created&¬e_id=499007474736 on FaceBook!

Once again there is no entry fee and the submissions need to be in by 11:59pm March 20th, 2011.

Another BIG announcement that John wants to make is that after the investors and Distributors make their money from the film, John is going to turn Plan 9 into the public domain. The web site will become an archive that filmmakers and fans can raid for all that they can carry! He feels that the material doesn’t belong to him, but to all. “This is the best way to see Ed’s vision live on.” – John Johnson

We have also started a Plan 9 Web Series Entitled "Criswell Predicts" based on the old Criswell Predictions from the 50's! It also ties directly into the film in ways that can can't explain now... But... Soon will be revealed... To see the Criswell Predicts playlist on youtube click here!

A New Promo Video For 'Grave Robbers From Outer Space'

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Christopher Kahler

It has been just over a year since I first wrote about film maker Christopher Kahler's remake of the Ed Wood classic (?) "Plan 9 From Outer Space." At that time I was questioning Kahler's sanity at making a modern redo of what is, arguably, one of the

worst films ever produced.

Of course, Kahler is not the only director working on a remake of the Wood's sci fi/horror stew, John Johnson, should be ready to debut his "Plan 9" any time now.

Yes, a year ago I questioned their sanity. Today, I say...."hey go for it!" "Why not?" The world could always use a good dose of camp, and how things are going these days, a good laugh or two.

If there was ever a time for a "Plan 9" remake, or two, it would be now.

Now, Kahler's take on redoing "Plan 9" is very straight-forward, stay close to Ed Wood's original as much as possible, but also expand on it in ways that the cult film maker never got a chance to.
The director explains, "There's actually 9 different story lines in our version that intersect throughout the movie and I've been told the script, 'reads more like a Stephen King novel than a 50s Z sci fi movie'. (With the new promo clip) I just wanted to show some of the comparisons between the original and ours for the similarities and differences. I wanted to really stress we haven't strayed away from the original premise even though we've updated a lot."

"The video clip has gotten the ball rolling once again and people really seem to be appreciating that we are sticking closer to the original film without goofing on it. The feedback has been amazing so far and quite humbling to say the least."

Recently the film maker got another rather impressive endorsement for his film, "The executor of Wood's estate personally told me he loves it, which is a huge boost so I think we're definitely on the right track with it."

Indeed, if Wood's people are on board, the rest of us should be as well.

Presently the production has run into a little money trouble, so Kahler has set up an account at Kickstarter, and produced a promotional video to help raise the needed cabbage to keep things rolling.

Scarlet Salem In A Haunting Tribute To Vampira

If you have been visiting Monster Island News for any period of time, you have likely heard me rave on-and-on about the wonderful horror photography being produced by artist H Morgen featuring the lovely actress and model, Scarlet Salem.

Well, over the past few weeks the duo have really outdone themselves with several series of shots the fit right into the Halloween season.

Today I want to focus on a set of photographs that are a tribute to Vampira, the Los Angeles horror hostess that was also the star of Ed Wood's ultimate camp classic "Plan 9 From Outer Space."

Now, it only seems fitting that Morgen And Salem chose Vampira as the theme for this set of pics, due mostly to the fact that this year is the 50th anniversary of "Plan 9" and that there are two remakes of the film in production.

For those of you who don't know, Vampira was played by Finnish actress Maila Nurmi, who first invented the character in 1953 as a costume for choreographer Lester Horton's annual Bal Caribe Masquerade, a Halloween ball for Hollywood "B" movie stars. Nurmi modeled the outfit after Morticia Addams from Charles Addams comic strip, "The Addams Family". The costume caught the attention of KABC-TV producer Hunt Stromberg, who went through a great deal to hire her to host his late-night horror movie program, later called "The Vampira Show".

I kinda have a confession to make. When I was a teen, I had the biggest crush on Morticia Addams, played by the wonderful actress Carolyn Jones, so for reasons that should be obvious to you, I have a real love for these photographs.

That, of course, takes nothing away from the wonderful work of Photographer H Morgen and the stunning Scarlet Salem.

Here is more of Scarlet as "Vampira":

The Trailer For John Johnson's 'Plan 9 From Outer Space' Remake

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Darkstone Entertainment

Many fans have questioned director John Johnson's reasoning for wanting to make a remake of Ed Wood's infamous movie, "Plan 9 From Outer Space", and yet even more fans have questioned his use of a bigger budget, better cast and updated script.

If you are one of these doubters, then the new trailer for "Plan 9" is unlikely to sway your opinions.

From what we see here, "Plan 9" looks a lot like the kind of film Ed Wood would have produced had he been possessed by George A. Romero, or vice-versa.

Granted, the trailer for the film looks really cool, but I don't honestly know If I quite buy Johnson's film as a proper tribute to the cheesy stylings of Wood?

I mean, where are the cardboard sets, where are the plastic space ships, where are the over-the-top vampire characters?

I guess that there was some little part of me that wanted to see some of that in the movie. Instead there is, what looks like, a very good space zombie movie here. Which is okay in it's own right.

I guess that it will just take some time for me to wrap my head around a big-budget "Plan 9".

Note: Director John Johnson is going to have a live chat feed at 8pm on Sunday, September 13, 2009 Eastern Standard Time to answer questions and discuss the film and teaser trailer. It will be held at this link… http://www.blogtv.com/People/darkstoneent

Plan 9 Remake Gets A Bigger Budget - Trailer On The Way

Written By: Ken Hulsey

On September 9th the producers of "Plan 9", the remake of the 1959 cult classic "Plan 9 From Outer Space", will be releasing a special teaser trailer for the film.

Originally the production team had hoped to have the film ready to go this year for the 50th anniversary of the infamous Ed Wood classic, but a new larger budget has given them more opportunities to produce a higher end movie. Originally the production was set to begin last March, that date has now been moved up to April of 2010. By allowing the extra time, it has allowed the film makers to switch from 16mm to Super 35mm film, which will provide a much better visual quality.

Director John Johnson explains, "....to make sure we still have something for the anniversary of the original film’s release in 1959 we shot this teaser trailer, which will to give the world a better idea of the style and direction we are going with our remake."

Here is a synopsis from the film's website:

In 1959, a film was released that would live in the minds and hearts of science fiction and horror fans for years to come. That film was Edward D. Wood, Jr.'s magnum opus, "Plan 9 From Outer Space", a story about aliens re-animating the dead in order to kill Earth's population. Though widely regarded as one of the worst films ever made, genre audiences could not resist the exuberance and love for the art of film making that showed in Wood's work, and the movie has become a cherished cult classic that still survives on home video and in midnight screenings across the world.

Now, in time to coincide with the 50th anniversary of "Plan 9 From Outer Space", director John Johnson – along with his production company, Darkstone Entertainment – is poised to remake the classic film. Simply titled "Plan 9", the remake will be a serious-minded retelling of the original story, paying homage to the spirit of Wood's film without resorting to camp or parody. The film will focus on the horror and science fiction aspects of the original, but will also be largely character-driven. Johnson's goal for "Plan 9" is to make a film that honors not only the original source material, but also Ed Wood's intentions when he made "Plan 9 From Outer Space". Wood's plan was to make a very scary sci-fi/horror film, and Johnson wishes to do exactly that – create a film that Wood would have enjoyed, or perhaps even made himself, if not bound by the technological limitations placed on filmmakers 50 years ago.

Meanwhile, the other "Plan 9 From Outer Space" remake, yes there are two, called "Grave Robbers From Outer Space", is already well into production.

New Stills From Grave Robbers From Outer Space

Christopher Kahler just sent me a quick e-mail with some brand new publicity stills from his upcoming remake of the Ed Wood classic "Plan 9 From Outer Space" called "Grave Robbers From Outer Space."

Kahler intends to expand on the story from the original by adding a back story for the Bela (Lugosi) and Vampira characters, called Phineas and Mera in the new film, plus other plot points that Wood was unable to.

Kahler's cast includes Kimberly Bendix (as Mera) Dawn Oswald (as Paula Trent), Michelle Shields, (as Officer Jamie), Joel D. Wynkoop (as Eros), Leann Van Mol (as Tanna), and Ron Blair (as Inspector Daniel Clay).

According to the director, "the filming is going even better than expected and everybody has been very pleased with it so far."

Grave Robbers From Outer Space - New Poster And Casting News

A couple of months back It was announced that Christopher Kahler was making a 50th anniversary tribute to Ed Wood's "Plan 9 From Outer Space" entitled, "Grave Robbers From Outer Space."

Kahler intends to expand on the story from the original by adding a back story for the Bela (Lugosi) and Vampira characters, called Phineas and Mera in the new film, plus other plot points that Wood was unable to.

Kahler tells us that he has already begun filming his movie, "...some 3 scenes requiring heavy fx have already been completed, and lots of other video fx shots have been getting tested out for the final movie."

The director also hopes that a special online auction will help with the expenses, "We are also stepping into auction territory to help offset production costs throughout the summer by placing the sole Executive Producer title up for grabs on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180358896633&viewitem=&salenotsupported). "

"This will helpfully cover a portion of flights, hotels, etc while getting the bulk of the movie shot in late June."

Today we also have more casting news:

The very buxom Michelle Shields has been cast as Officer Jamie, a part originally played by Conrad Brooks in "Plan 9."

Is There Room Enough In This Galaxy For Another Plan 9 Remake?

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: Christopher Kahler / Avery Guerra

To a lot of horror and sci fi movie fans the title "Plan 9 From Outer Space" holds a certain place in their hearts. The movie is considered by many to be one of the worst, if not the worst, science fiction films ever produced. Of course, many of us who are sci fi fanatics, can list some films that may indeed be bigger piles of dung, "Robot Monster" comes to mind at the moment. Regardless, the Ed Wood 'classic' seems like a very unlikely candidate for a remake, yet there are two, count em, two remakes in the works.

Way back in May of last year it was revealed that director John Johnson was making a 50th anniversary homage to the film. Well, now we have Christopher Kahler making his own "Plan 9" remake called, "Grave Robbers From Outer Space."

Kahler is taking on many different tasks for "Grave Robbers", including writer, director and possibly, actor as well. The director, however, still hasn't made up his mind if he wants to step in front of the camera or not, ".... (I)might have a cameo as one of the grave diggers, but I'm definitely not doing this so I can be 'the star' of it, like so many filmmakers tend to do. That just seems to be self serving and ridiculous."

The film maker has also decided to name of couple of the marquee characters that Ed Wood left nameless in his film, "The Bela (Lugosi) and Vampira characters are named Phineas and Mera since neither had names in the original 'Plan 9 From Outer Space'."

Kahler even wants to expand even further on the original story in areas that the original never touched on, for good reasons at the time, "Our version has a back story as to why someone as old as Bela in the original was married to sexy young Vampira. All of that got skipped over since he was dead by time 'Plan 9' started shooting and she refused to have any dialogue."

The director has already cast his female vampire lead. Kimberly Bendix (Photo Above) will be reprising the iconic role that Vampira made....well famous.

Kahler's cast also includes Dawn Oswald (as Paula Trent)(Photo Below #2), Leann Van Mol (as Tanna)(Photo Below #1), and Ron Blair (as Inspector Daniel Clay)(Photo Below #3). Also included in the cast is David "The Rock" Nelson, an ultra-low-budget film maker who fans either love or hate, depending on who you talk to. Anyway, he is a colorful individual, who is certain to make the production interesting to say the least.

I think that Ed Wood would pleased that two film makers are making a remake of "Plan 9 From Outer Space", although I would believe that even he would question the validity of the projects.

Maybe one "Plan 9" was all this universe needed?

Mr Lobo And Conrad Brooks Cast In Plan 9 From Outer Space Remake

Sources: Avery Guerra / Imdb / Plan9movie.com

The cast for the upcoming remake, of what many consider to be the worst film ever made, "Plan 9 From Outer Space" has been announced and it is a virtual "whos-who" of modern B movie films. Topping the list is Conrad Brooks, the sole surviving member of the original film's cast. A plesent surprise is the news that Eric Lobo, aka Mr. Lobo from TV's Cinema Insomnia, who is a friend of Monster Island News, has been cast as "Criswell". Also included in the cast are "scream queens" Brinke Stevens, Monique Dupree and newcomer Caitlin Hill.

"Plan 9" is being made with the blessing and participation of Conrad Brooks, the sole surviving member of the original film's cast and crew. To go as a sister project to the remake, director Johnson and actor Brooks plan to do a commentary for the original film with a Q + A retrospective for its 2 disc DVD release with no set street date at the moment, however the new film is scheduled to premiere on September 9, 2009 (09.09.09).

“Even if Eddie was a little off in his filmmaking skills, you cannot deny his passion. I feel a strong camaraderie for the man and his work, and hope that I can make a film that would be as loved by audiences today as the original was for his generation…Only this time with its true intention.” -John Johnson
