NIGHTBEASTS Scores At Midnight Black Festival Of Darkness

Written By: Ken Hulsey

I know that Bigfoot movies are a dime a dozen these days but that doesn't mean that they are all copycats or typical low-budget fodder. To be honest many of these films are quite good. One of these films that I have been talking about for the past couple of years is film maker Wes Sullivan's "Nightbeasts" which has really stood out in a sea of Sasquatch.

Apparently I'm not the only one who believes that "Nightbeasts" is one of the better Bigfoot movies out there, as well as one of the better horror movies. The film just took the Best of Genre Award in the Supernatural category at the Midnight Black Festival of Darkness beating out such films such films as Shawn Barfield and Brian Evans' "By Dawn" and Carol Sullivan's "Monster In The Closet" .

In conjunction with the festival "Nightbeasts" can been streamed in it's entirety for on $1.69. Just follow this link - NIGHTBEASTS

A Quick Update On NIGHTBEASTS

I just got an email from Brent Thomas about a new festival screening of the really cool looking Bigfoot horror "Nightbeasts".

Yes, I know, another day another Bigfoot movie right?

Well, normally I would say yes, but "Nightbeasts" looks like an excellent entry into the genre with all kinds of Native American lore and pissed off Sasquatch's running around.

Anyway, the film is set to premiere at the end of this month (Feb 24-27) at the Independent Film Quarterly Film Festival at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood.

Hopefully Brent can score me some tickets to that one.

Here is the trailer for "Nightbeasts":

Bigfoot Movie News - Nightbeasts Premiere Info - The Bloody Rage Comes To DVD

Well, the Bigfoot movie craze that exploded throughout 2009 and the early part of 2010 seems to be coming to a halt, or at least taking a breather for a bit.

It seems like all that I have been writing about lately is stories about monsters from the sea, but fear not, I do have a couple of noteworthy items from the world of Sasquatch cinema to pass along to you.

I don't know if you remember back to a October of last year when I wrote an article about a very promising Bigfoot related film project called "Nightbeasts", which was written, produced and directed by film maker Wes Sullivan.

The film was to be Sullivan's first foray into 'live-action' cinema after a very successful career as a animator on such classics as "Aladdin", "A Goofy Movie", "Pocahontas" and "Hercules" for Disney.

At the time I didn't really do much of a write-up on the film, mostly because I was literally overwhelmed with harry hominid movie stories at the time, though I though the trailer that was out for the film at the time was quite good, and I thought that the story was rather interesting.

Well, almost a year has gone by since that time, and I had pretty much forgotten about "Nightbeasts" until I received an email about it's premiere earlier this week.

Also attached to the email was a link to a brand-new trailer for "Nightbeasts", which has rekindled my interest in seeing this one.

Here is the skinney:

"Nightbeasts" stars Zach Galligan (Gremlins 1&2), Audra Wise (Nip/Tuck, Miss Cast Away) and young Chad Trager, as common everyday people who, along with a group of Native Americans, are menaced by a clan of angry Sasquatch.

I know that's not much of a synopsis, but there is no official info out there about the film, so I had to go with a 'Readers Digest" condensed summery of what is seen in both trailers.

"Nightbeasts" is set to premiere at the Arpa International Film Festival at the historic Hollywood Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood California on September 24th 2010.

At this time the website for the Egyptian doesn't reflect that festival, yet, but when it does you can find out more info - HERE

I am happy to report that James Baack's film, "The Bloody Rage of Bigfoot", is now available on DVD through Amazon.com!

As I first reported back in July, Baack was able to secure a distribution deal for his film through Cheezy Flicks Entertainment, the same company that owns the rights the Charles Pierce classic, "The Legend of Boggy Creek." Well, now that deal has bore fruit and the film has been unleashed on the unsuspecting populous.

If you have been even a casual reader of MIN for the past year-and-a-half then you should know all about "Bloody Rage", due to the fact that Baack has been feeding me exclusives about the film since it was first announced in March of 2009.

If for some reason you are either new to the site, have short-term memory loss, or ya just missed it somehow, let me some up the film this way ......um ...... Bigfoot (obviously, right?) ..... um ....... hot sadistic witches, a nutso clown ..... really cheesy special effects, blood, guts, a Godzilla/Sasquatch hybrid .... oh, and it's all in 3D!

Okay, that makes the film sound crazy right? Well, there is much more here than meets the eye. The film really is a psychological thriller that incorporates all of the elements that I mentioned above, plus, and most importantly, it's a fun film to watch.

Another Reason To Not Wander Around In The Woods At Night - Wes Sullivan's 'Nightbeasts'

Okay, that's it! I'm officially proclaiming 2009 as 'The Year Of The Bigfoot Movie"......or "The Year Of The Sasquatch Movie".......maybe "Skunk Ape Movie?" Whatever. If it's eight-foot-tall, covered in hair, and walks on two legs, then this is the year to make a movie about it.

Let's do a quick run-down for any of you out there that haven't been paying attention. The list of 2009 American primate films include, "Savage", directed by Jordan Blum, "The Bloody Rage of Bigfoot", directed by James Baack, "Trailer Park Geocachers Meet Bigfoot", by David Carriere, "The Shrieking", by Shawn Hunt and Brian T. Jaynes "Boggy Creek".

Well, "Boggy Creek" is supposed to have some sort of swamp monster in it, not necessarily Bigfoot, but it is based on the 1972 Charles B. Pierce classic, "The Legend of Boggy Creek", and that had Bigfoot in it, so I will count it.

As you can correctly assume, I am adding yet another film to the list, Wes Sullivan's "Nightbeasts".

Why such an interest in Bigfoot this year? Is it because of Jeffrey Meldrum's book and documentary, "Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science?" Is it because of the publication of my own encounter with Bigfoot in Arizona back in the early 90s? Is it because of that stupid hoax about a dead Bigfoot body?

Who knows?

The only thing for sure is, Sasquatch is making a comeback, and how.

Wes Sullivan has written, produced and directed "Nightbeasts." Not known for 'live-action' films, Sullivan has made his mark as an illustrator for some of the most famous animated films ever produced, including, "Aladdin", "A Goofy Movie", "Pocahontas" and "Hercules", to name just a few.

Here is the trailer:

You have to admit that the clip looks very interesting. I like the addition of the Native American folklore to the story.

Hey, anythings gotta be better than, "The Bloody Rage of Bigfoot" right? Well, maybe it's not fair to compare the two films? They are both coming from two entirely different points of view on every ones favorite crypto.
