The Flash: "Death of the Speed Force"

What’s a speedster without the Speed Force? While Batman’s abilities come from deep pockets and years of study, Aquaman and Superman gain their powers from their unique physiology and Wonder Woman’s are a gift from the gods, the Flash gets his speed from one place—the Speed Force. So, we ask again, what is the Flash without the Speed Force?

Over the years, the momentously strong, somewhat mystical force that powers most speedsters and helps keep the other forces of the world in balance has been shown to be extremely important to not only the Flash, but to the entire DC Multiverse. If it were to suddenly be no more, it’s hard to predict what might happen…but it’s probably not going to be good. Along with losing some of the world’s best heroes, we can expect disruption on a fundamental scale. Cosmic forces held in check, suddenly unchecked. Super-villains imprisoned over the years in the Speed Force, unexpectedly free. Parts of the Multiverse previously inaccessible, now open for anyone to explore. It could turn the world inside out, making fast things slow and slow things solid. It could play havoc with time and space.

Really, this is all just scratching the surface. We just don’t know what the death of the Speed Force would mean for the DC Universe. In fact, the only thing we do know is that we’re about to find out. This week’s The Flash #76 kicks off an impactful new storyline for Barry Allen and the rest of the world’s Flashes. If you’re a Flash fan, you’re not going to want to miss this one. Joshua Williamson and Howard Porter’s long awaited “Flash War” continues this week in THE FLASH #48, and for Wally West, everything is about to change. In last month’s debut chapter, the Flash Family was confronted by the Renegades, a team of super-powered peacekeepers from the future who look a lot like the Rogues, but who say they only want to see justice served. The problem is that the justice they seek is for Eobard Thawne, who was killed by Iris in the future. After a brief battle, Iris agreed to go with the Renegades to plead her case, not wanting her actions to continue creating problems for her friends and family. Wally, Barry and Kid Flash said they would accompany her through time, only Wally disappeared in the process—his journey redirected by none other than his old nemesis, Zoom.

At least, he used to be Wally’s nemesis. Now, Zoom claims that he just wants to help. To restore all that was taken from the former Flash—starting with Wally’s family. While Wally remembered Linda Park, he had forgotten about Jai and Irey, his two children with her, until he’s painfully reminded of them in this exclusive sneak peek at this pivotal issue.

The Flash...Defeated by Gorilla Grodd?!?

Well, that mysterious, chatty girl from Barry (Grant Gustin) and Iris' (Candice Patton) wedding made another appearance on The Flash, and now there's an even crazier twist — she can write in the Speed Force code Barry was scribbling in the Season 4 premiere.

Obviously we don't know much about this girl other than that she's a sweetheart, a nervous talker, wicked smart and tied to the Speed Force somehow, but all evidence seems to be pointing in a pretty obvious direction — one that we've pointed out before. If she's not the future daughter of Barry Allen and Iris West-Allen, then this has officially been the meanest fake-out The Flash has ever pulled.

Not only does she look eerily like Iris, she's also got all of Barry's nervous ticks. Not to mention, she seemed to recognize Cisco (Carlos Valdes) and Ralph (Hartley Sawyer) in Jitters. At least, we assume she recognized them thanks to her super unsubtle "total strangers" comment.

The real question is, if she is Dawn Allen (thank you source material), what the heck is she doing in the past?

THE FLASH: Season Four - As if meeting your girlfriend’s father for the first time isn’t stressful enough!

The appropriately fast-paced peek at The Flash’s upcoming fourth season gave us a…well, peek at the return of Britne Oldford’s Peek-a-Boo, a strong-but-grieving Iris West and a once again heroic Caitlin Snow. (Though actress Danielle Panabaker promised that fans of both Caitlin Snow and Killer Frost will be pleased this season.)



However, the trailer didn’t include next season’s central villain, Clifford Devoe, better known to DC fans as the Thinker. Played by The 100’s Neil Sandilands, Devoe is a metahuman with a mega mind who embarks on a season-long battle with the Scarlet Speedster that pits the “fastest man alive” against the “fastest mind alive.” A true genius, he’s devised an intricate plan to fix all that he deems wrong with humanity.

To help with this, it turns out the Thinker has a partner-in-crime—a character known only as the Mechanic and played by Kim Engelbrecht (Dominion). The Mechanic is a highly intelligent engineer who designs devices for Devoe. As Devoe’s right hand, she’s the truest of true believers who’ll stop at nothing to help him implement his plan to fix humanity.

Finally, and perhaps most surprising, was the announcement than none other than Danny Trejo—yes, of Machete, From Dusk Till Dawn and Sons of Anarchy fame—will be playing the new role of Breacher, a feared bounty hunter from Earth-19 and the imposing father to inter-dimensional bounty hunter, Gypsy. His mission is to prevent any inter-dimensional traveler from threatening life on his planet—especially his daughter’s.

Wally's Titans friends throw a surprise party for his twentieth birthday. During the party, he gets an emergency call from the hospital. He is needed to deliver a heart for a transplant patient, writer Eugenie Hedstrom, from New York to Seattle. He convinces the doctors to give him health insurance in return for his help.

While passing through Wyoming, he witnesses Vandal Savage throttle a private investigator to death.

After delivering the heart and speaking with Hedstrom, Wally flies back to New York. The Third World Liberation Army attempts to hijack the flight, but Wally stops them, spraining his wrist in the process. Upon returning to his apartment, he discovers that a lottery ticket he had purchased before the party just made him a millionaire. Then he notices a present he had not seen before. Opening it, he discovers a human heart. Vandal Savage is in his apartment.

Iron Man removes his armor and plugs himself into a nearby wall socket, saving his life. Jarvis arrives and wonders if Tony is Iron Man, but Tony quickly covers up the incident. Soon after Tony departs, Princess Python springs her pet python on Jarvis, forcing him to tell her where Stark has gone. As Iron Man flies over the city, Marianne has another vision of the Cyborg menacing him. Elsewhere, the Super-Adaptoid sets out for revenge, but while flying it suddenly loses its powers and falls to the ground. In the micro-world of Bast, the cousins Tyrr and Jarr are controlling the Adaptoid in the hope of saving their war-riddled world. Tony Stark appears on television for an interview when suddenly Princess Python takes him prisoner with her python, demanding one million dollars and a plane to South America. Tony escapes and becomes Iron Man. He pursues Princes Python to Stark Industries where their battle leads to a catwalk over a vat of acid; Iron Man hurls the python into the vat, killing it. Distraught, Princess Python tries to follow her pet, but Iron Man saves her. In Bast, Tyrr and Jarr transform the Super-Adaptoid into a new being - the Cyborg that Marianne has seen in her visions.

Sabretooth and Constrictor are back in town, and Sabretooth is out for revenge against Misty Knight for the injuries he sustained in battle against her (he was the mysterious Slasher from issue #78.) Accompanied by the Constrictor, Sabretooth tracks Misty's scent to the apartment she shares with Harmony Young.

Inside Misty, Colleen Wing, Bob Diamond, and Iron Fist are about to go out for the night. Power Man drops Harmony off at home for the night and declines an offer to the join the others. Once everyone else leaves Harmony by her lonesome, Sabretooth (mistaking Harmony for Misty) attacks. When Iron Fist and the others hear the commotion; they then doubled back to try and rescue Misty, but they then find themselves blocked by the Constrictor.

The X-Men are sent by Professor Xavier to find a mutant detected by Cerebro. Dr. John Stennis arrives at the farm of Jacob and Marjorie Marks to find all the livestock dead. Entering the house he finds Marjorie who has been aged to the point of death. Elsewhere Silas Lane arrives at the Clark residence and is terrified to find the ‘killer robot’ sitting in their living room. After the situation is explained, he pulls the birth records and they compare the lists. It is realized the Jacob Marks also is listed as having the same birthday as the banished Wraiths. Rom is concerned that a Wraith may have married a human woman and sired a child. Rom, Brandy, and Steve head to the Marks farm where they find Jacob & Marjorie outside. Jacob openly declares himself a Dire Wraith and relates how he came to be on Earth and what has happened so far. Rom enters the house and confronts the child, Jimmy Marks who is revealed as Hybrid. Jacob attempts to slay the abomination but is himself slain. Rom attempts to banish Hybrid, but his unique DNA does not allow it. Rom is about to use the highest setting of his Neutralizer on Hybrid when the X-men arrive. Jimmy has reverted to his child form and the X-men believe Rom to be the danger.

Star Wars Closing In On Avatar, Firestorm, Godzilla Exposed and Star Trek Memories

'The Force Awakens' Barreling Toward 'Avatar' Record

Having vanquished Titanic and Jurassic World, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has set its sights on Avatar.

The space opera sequel is moving up the all-time domestic box office charts at a record clip and now is poised to overtake those pointy eared blue aliens as the top grossing film in history. Avatar earned $760.5 million during its stateside run and Star Wars: The Force Awakens has generated $740.4 million domestically after picking up $88.3 million over New Year’s weekend. It should take the crown from Avatar early next week.

Globally, Star Wars: The Force Awakens ranks as the sixth highest-grossing film in history, having earned $1.5 billion worldwide. It should pass Furious 7 and Marvel’s The Avengers to become the fourth biggest film in history in the coming days. The film will get a big shot in the arm next week when it premieres in China, the world’s second biggest market for film. Depending on how enthusiastically it is received in the People’s Republic, The Force Awakens could shoot past Avatar’s record $2.8 billion global haul.

The Flash: Earth-2’s Firestorm Revealed

The highly anticipated return of The Flash season 2 will change the face of Central City and complicate the life of Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) even further than we’ve already seen. The introduction of Earth-2 has brought a fierce new enemy with the arrival of Zoom, and a recent promo gives us a look at Caitlin Snow’s (Danielle Panabaker) Killer Frost and a glimpse at the returning Reverse-Flash.

Season 1 ended with Firestorm — Ronnie Raymond (Robbie Amell) and Martin Stein (Victor Garber) — saving the city, with Ronnie sacrificing himself in the process. Since then, we’ve met the new half of Firestorm in Jefferson “Jax” Jackson (Franz Drameh), who had to dig deep to prove to himself that he had a hero inside him. Still, Robbie Amell has promised that we’d see him again.

Now we might have an idea of how we’ll be seeing Amell’s Ronnie Raymond as his superhero alter ego. Twitter user @canadagraphs (via CBM) shared an image of Robbie Amell in a notably different Firestorm costume.

TOHO'S NEW "GODZILLA RESURGENCE" EXPOSED

Earlier today, a number of low-res images began appearing on Twitter and Facebook featuring shots taken of the "monster suit" from Toho's upcoming production of GODZILLA RESURGENCE, directed by Hideaki Anno (Evangelion) and Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan), bowing this coming July 29th in Japan.

This will probably be the most divisive Godzilla design since Patrick Tatapolous' deviation for the 1998 Roland Emmerich debacle. Anno's conceit recalls the initial concept for Godzilla by Ishiro Honda, as a literal victim of the H-Bomb — his scales resembling keloid scars — and may not be his only form.

GENE RODDENBERRY'S WAGON TRAIN TO 'STAR TREK'

The phones began ringing in Aurora, Colorado, Friday morning at Star Trek: The Official Fan Club—250 calls in the first few hours. “We’ve had people breaking down on the phone crying,” says president Dan Madsen. “Their lives are so influenced by him that they can’t imagine the world without him. But Gene’s creation will live long and prosper long after he’s gone.” If you need to be told that “Gene” is Gene Roddenberry, who died last week at 70, if the words “Live long and prosper” don’t evoke the image of his pointy-eared brainchild Spock giving that splay-fingered Vulcan valediction—and if you’re confusing Mr. Spock with Dr. Spock—you’re clearly no Trekker. Gene Roddenberry would’ve had hope for you anyway.

When he launched Star Trek in 1966, its high concept (no one called it that) was “Wagon Train to the Stars”: a Western in space. Roddenberry’s model, though, was Gulliver’s Travels: social, political, even philosophical commentary disguised as adventure. Yet instead of Swift’s savage indignation, Roddenberry had an unsentimental optimism. His earthlings of the future were the same old unstable compounds of good and evil, but they hadn’t destroyed themselves, and darned if they’d let ornery aliens push them or anybody else around. Good to hear, especially with Vietnam and the arms race going on. The Original Series only lasted three seasons: It aired opposite Bewitched and My Three Sons, then moved to Friday night, opposite teenage fans’ dates and parties. But those 79 episodes are still syndicated to some 200 stations, and they’ve sold more than a billion dollars’ worth of books, videos and paraphernalia. The five Star Trek movies have grossed $400 million; a sixth is due in December. And the hit series Star Trek: The Next Generation, now in its fifth season, beams down into 12 million households.

During the fight with the thieves, Catwoman secretly causes Batgirl to botch her attempt to stop the crooks, allowing Catwoman to do the honors to make Batgirl look bad when Batman and Robin ultimately arrive.

Later, Batman, Robin, Batgirl and Catwoman all appear at the Gotham Coin Chateau to stop crooks from robbing the place. In the middle of the fight, it turns out to be a trap orchestrated by Catwoman in order to knock Batman out and learn his secret identity, however this is foiled by a special paint that Batman placed under his mask to protect his identity still. The heroes eventually revive themselves and Batgirl has the honors of defeating Catwoman. With Catwoman in custody, Batgirl explains how Catwoman orchestrated events before leaving the Dynamic Duo to take Catwoman to jail.

Later that night, Dr. Octopus attacks a shipment of a new weapon nullifier device being transported by the military. When Parker is nowhere to be found, Jameson has his home called even though it's 3:00 in the morning, the call is not received very well by Harry Osborn. When Peter tries to stop Dr. Octopus from stealing the device, they fight across a lab owned by Stark Industries. The fight is ultimately ended when Dr. Octopus uses the device on Spider-Man, causing him to be struck with amnesia. Deciding to capitalize on this good fortune, Dr. Octopus convinces Spider-Man that he is a criminal in the employ of Dr. Octopus.

Comics Icon to Continue Pen New Stories Based on Critically-Acclaimed Multiversity Comics and Multiversity Guidebook, plus New Adventures with the Dark Knight

During his “Multiversity and Beyond” panel at COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL: SAN DIEGO 2015, critically-acclaimed writer Grant Morrison introduced fans to two of his upcoming projects for DC Entertainment.

Morrison revealed “MULTIVERSITY TOO,” a line of original graphic novels based on his groundbreaking and bestselling titles from “The Multiversity” series of monthly comics and his “MULTIVERSITY GUIDEBOOK.” Fans will experience stories from throughout the 52 (or more?) worlds that make up Morrison’s Map of the Multiverse and whether it’s the further adventures of Earth-4’s PAX AMERICANA, the New Reichsmen of Earth-10, the female-led Justice Guild of Earth-11 or even one of the seven “unknown worlds,” everything is fair game!

The series begins in 2016 with MULTIVERSITY TOO: THE FLASH. But from which earth is anyone’s guess!

Morrison also provided early details on another series of graphic novels featuring everyone’s favorite Dark Knight in BATMAN: BLACK & WHITE. This continuing anthology series pairs Morrison’s original Batman stories with a rotating cast of some of the biggest art talents in comics, that will only serve to highlight Grant’s one of a kind perspective when it comes to comics in general and Batman in particular.
