Leonard Nimoy (1931-2015) - He Was Spock, He Was Not Spock

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Today I was very saddened when I learned that the iconic television and movie actor Leonard Nimoy had succumbed to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at the age of 83. Like many of you out there, my first taste of science fiction television came from Star Trek and Nimoy's character on the show, Spock, was always my favorite. It would be safe to say that he was in part responsible for spawning my life long love of the genre, which in turn spawned the website where you are reading this. Indeed my heart is heavy on learning that one of my favorite actors has passed on to his creator.

Nimoy was born on March 26, 1931 in Boston, Massachusetts to Orthodox Jewish immigrants from Iziaslav, Soviet Union. He began acting at the tender age of eight at a local children's theater. Bitten by the acting bug he would later attend Boston College where he studied drama, though he never completed his studies.

In the early to mid fifties Leonard Nimoy landed small roles in several low-budget science fiction and western movies before he had a brief cameo in the iconic monster movie "Them!" in 1954. Nimoy's real bulk of work, pre Trek, consisted of more sci fi and westerns on television including appearances on The Twilight Zone, Sea Hunt, Colt .45, Wagon Train, Rawhide, Bonanza, Perry Mason, and The Outer Limits.

In 1965 Nimoy turned down a role on the soap opera Peyton Place to shoot a pilot called "The Cage" for yet another science fiction themed television program called Star Trek. Though NBC initially rejected Gene Roddenberry's cerebral vision of a prime time television series about space adventurers, the show was given yet another chance, in a more Joe public friendly format, and Nimoy was the only cast member from the original pilot invited back. As they say "the rest was history", we all know that Star Trek lasted a mere three seasons on television despite capturing legions of fans, many of them women who actually found Spock more sexy than his dashing counterpart Captain James T. Kirk, played by William Shatner.

After Trek Nimoy was immediately hired on the spy series Mission: Impossible, in which he replaced actor Martin Landau. Nimoy was cast in the role of Paris, an IMF agent who was an ex-magician and make-up expert "The Great Paris." He played the role during seasons four and five (1969–71).

Though Mission: Impossible was a popular series it was his work on the show In Search of..., which was a documentary series about the paranormal, monsters, UFOs and other phenomena, that many fans remember fondly today.

Though many unsuccessful attempts were made to bring Star Trek back to primetime television, the show was in essence reborn as an animated series aimed at the young audience that made the series a huge success on afternoon syndicated television. All of the original cast members were brought in to voice there respective characters including Nimoy and his alter ego Spock.

In 1977 Nimoy wrote his first autobiography entitled "I am Not Spock" in 1975 where in the actor tried to tell the story of his life aside from his most famous television persona. The fans, to put it mildly, didn't welcome the memoirs with an open mind and in 1995 he wrote a follow-up book entitled "I am Spock". In this more fan friendly volume Nimoy actually had factious conversations with his half-Vulcan-half-human alter ego in the end coming to the summation that Spock was indeed a part of his soul ... and vice versa.

In the later years of Nimoy's career he would amass a very large resume of work both in front and behind the camera in both movies and television. He also had a very successful career as a theater actor staring in acclaimed roles in productions such as Fiddler on the Roof, The Man in the Glass Booth, Oliver!, 6 Rms Riv Vu, Full Circle, Camelot, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The King and I, Caligula, The Four Poster, Twelfth Night, Sherlock Holmes, Equus, and My Fair Lady.

As time passed from the seventies to the eighties and beyond Nimoy would again take on the Spock character in numerous movies and television adaptations culminating in JJ. Abrams' 2009 reimagining of Star Trek in which has passed the Spock torch on to actor Zachary Quinto.

Though Nimoy was known as an actor, director, writer, and producer he was also a renowned photographer and vocalist who produced numerous albums including Leonard Nimoy Presents Mr. Spock's Music From Outer Space, Two Sides of Leonard Nimoy, The Way I Feel, The Touch of Leonard Nimoy, and The New World of Leonard Nimoy. He also had a minor hit song with the cult favorite "The Ballad Of Bilbo Baggins" based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" books.

Leonard Nimoy's contribution to the fantasy and science fiction genre have made him an enduring pop culture icon who's true body of work has been an inspiration to, and will continue to inspire, actors and writers for generations to come. Ironically, through the character of Spock, Nimoy has in a sense become immortal and undoubtedly when mankind does "boldly go where no man has gone before" the character will travel with them. I can't imagine a future without Star Trek airing somewhere.

Star Wars Episode 7: Who is the Jedi Luke Skywalker is Training?

As always, there could be possible Star Wars Episode 7 SPOILERS below, enter at your own risk.

From Movie Pilot

Luke Skywalker has been at the center of many of the recent Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens rumors including a recent one that we might see the actor Robert Boulter play a young Luke Skywalker in one of the rumored flashback sequences in the movie. While the idea of a flashback in a Star Wars movie still strikes many as somewhat blasphemous for one reason or another, it's looking pretty likely that we'll get at least one.

There's no conformation that Robert Boulter is in Star Wars Episode 7 in any kind of role but if you squint just right he does resemble a young Mark Hamill. We do however have confirmation that Billie Lourd, Carrie Fisher's 21 year old daughter, is in the movie and playing a young Princess Leia, complete with those hair buns and everything if the Daily Mail is to be believed. And who would ever doubt the Daily Mail?

The two actors could probably pass for being relatively the same age if the flashback for both of these characters is taking place at the same time, which would make some sense. One flashback to cover all the necessary information we need would seem more prudent than multiple flashbacks throughout the movie.

Cecil Castellucci and Chris Sprouse's Wonder Woman Tale

From DC Comics

With so much going on in the DC Universe and the mega-event Convergence looming on the horizon, it’s easy to lose sight of the amazing digital first comics coming out every week. You don’t want to do that, and you particularly don’t want to fall behind on Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman, which has become one of the most original, cutting edge and flat-out fun comic books that we’re publishing right now.

You don’t need to be familiar with Wonder Woman’s continuity, backstory or supporting cast to understand it. In fact, all you really need is an interest in compelling, unique super hero storytelling. The fact that it stars one of the most popular characters in pop culture who almost never gets the anthology treatment is just gravy—but admittedly, pretty awesome gravy. After all, it’s the chance to write or draw a Wonder Woman tale that has drawn such a cool collection of creators to Sensation Comics.

Case in point, Sensation’s newest creative team: Writer Cecil Castellucci, Penciller Chris Sprouse, Inker Karl Story and Colorist Jordie Bellaire. Castellucci is a popular YA novelist and comic writer who is probably best known (at least around here) for her MINX series, The Plain Janes. Sprouse, Story and Bellaire are the art team behind the recent Tom Strong. What’s a Wonder Woman tale conceived by these very different creative forces look like?

Guest starring Lois Lane, the two-part “Girls’ Day Out” reveals what happens when two of DC’s most famous female characters connect for an interview. It’s smart, whimsical and fun. It makes you wonder why these two don’t team up more often. And it’s an absolute must-read for anyone looking for strong, positive female-driven super hero comics.

In the spirit of their story, we decided to sit Castellucci and Sprouse down for a little interview of our own. Enjoy…

What’s your favorite thing about Wonder Woman?

Cecil Castellucci: One of my favorite things about Wonder Woman is how much care and love she has for humanity. I think that it is extremely brave of her to leave her island and forge her own life. It takes guts to leave what you know and go to a place where you are the unknown. I also think that her strength comes not only from her superpowers, but also springs from her amazing sense of self. She knows exactly who she is and she makes no apologies for it. She's singular, but while she's so different, she's relatable to us mere mortal women. Wonder Woman shows us all that we have our rare particular talents and our turn to shine. Sometimes it's only Wonder Woman who has the skill set that can save the day. As a lady, I appreciate that.

Chris Sprouse: I've always loved the mythological aspect of the character. Wonder Woman is not just a female Superman—she's a god! She's not a human being, and I like the way Cecil played her in our story: she's a stranger in a strange land.

Godzilla Hotel To Open In Tokyo

From Yahoo Movies

Godzilla Hotel To Open In Tokyo

Ever wondered how you’d feel if you looked out of the window of a big city hotel room to see Godzilla outside? Well, soon visitors to Tokyo will be able to experience just that, for real… more or less.

This April will see the opening of Hotel Gracery in the Shinjuku district of Japan’s capital city, and the hotel will have some most unique selling points based around the monster movie franchise which has become of Japan’s biggest (in more ways than one) pop culture exports.

The hotel is situated above Shinjuku’s Toho Cinema - Toho Studios being the birthplace of the King of the Monsters - and a giant Godzilla head statue is being erected on the cinema’s roof.

Harley Quinn in Infinite Crisis: One Crazy Champion

From DC Comics

For the developers of Infinite Crisis, the online game set in the DC Comics Multiverse, only one thing is crazier than Harley Quinn… and that’s not putting her in the game. That’s why the team chose the former psychologist as one of their earliest characters to work on. Even before Superman.

Who’s laughing now, Kent?

The Infinite Crisis development team has a sweet job, really. They get to take the biggest names in DC Comics and bring them to life, building skill kits and animations that capture the essence of who they are. Batman is a serious and silent assassin, Doomsday a raging abomination, and Wonder Woman a selfless defender. And in this world of idyllic heroes and ruthless villains, Harley is crazier than Dex-Starr on catnip.

That’s why she was such a treat to work on for the Infinite Crisis art team—because she really is the one character who can do anything. Skipping through the game’s environments when the whole of existence is at stake? No problem. Playing with her dolls when no one is looking? Check. Dressing up in her favorite footie pajamas before smacking people around with her teddy bear? Hell yes!

But it’s not all fun and games; Harley has a serious job to do too. (Actually, it is a game and a fun one at that, but we’re digressing.) As the Joker’s frequent sidekick, she has a lot of experience as an enabler, helping the Clown Prince of Crime pull off his craziest plans. She’s actually a lot like Robin in that regard, minus the parental tragedy and grappling hook.

Well, in Infinite Crisis, Harley continues that pedigree as a controller—a supporting character who helps her teammates get the job done. Plus, she has a unique set of skills at her disposal with which to do it. She can heal her allies with laughter (it’s the best medicine, after all), give her enemies a few pies to the face, or smack them around with her giant hammer (we suggest adding your own crazy sound effects when you do it—“Thwa-funk!” is a personal favorite of ours). When used properly, these skills create great opportunities for Harley’s allies to secure kills or escape to safety in the game.

Here’s the best part. Maybe the folks at Infinite Crisis have been infected by some of Harley’s crazy, but Infinite Crisis is free to download and play right now! Plus, as you complete the tutorial and learn the ropes, you can unlock six DC champions to play—including Ms. Quinn herself. And as if that wasn’t enough, in honor of Harley Quinn Month, we’re giving away 25 Bombshell Harley Quinn costume codes over on Facebook every weekday until the end of the month. So grab one for yourself and get in the game. Mr. J is waiting…

Joseph Kahn’s Power Rangers Short Film

This morning Adi Shankar released Power/Rangers, a “bootleg short film” directed by Joseph Kahn (Torque, Detention), co-written by Dutch Southern (Bad Turn Worse) and starring James Van Der Beek (Dawson’s Creek) and Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica). Described as “a twist on the Power Rangers mythos”, the short film is a a well crafted brilliant fx-heavy send-up of dark and gritty fan films while also somehow being a fun addition to the genre.

Steven Spielberg Hopes To Direct Chris Pratt In Indiana Jones Reboot

From Deadline Hollywood

Here’s a good one to chew on as we head off to the pre-Oscar parties. Last month, I reported that Steven Spielberg wants Chris Pratt to anchor the rebirth of Indiana Jones that is being developed at Disney. It’s very early days, but my sources tell me that, assuming a script comes in to his satisfaction, Spielberg hopes to direct that film. He directed the first four with Harrison Ford as the swashbuckling archaeologist.

Godzilla, Seven Samurai Reunited at Tokyo Exhibition

From Japan Realtime

Some of Japan’s most iconic film characters, including Godzilla and the Seven Samurai, are reunited at a Tokyo exhibition that recalls the great age of Japanese film, and features Japanese-film specialties — monsters and samurai.

“Toho Studios – Innovative Filmmakers in Setagaya,” which opened on Feb. 21 at the Setagaya Art Museum, explores the creative legacy of Toho Studios, which started as the Photo Chemical Laboratory in 1932 and has been the birthplace of countless films since. Among the most memorable, “Godzilla” and “Seven Samurai” were both released in 1954 and came to symbolize the studio’s golden age.

The exhibition introduces many of the creative people who worked for the studio over its 80-year history, exploring how the films were made, with a special focus on the two legendary films.

At the opening reception on Feb. 20, museum director Tadayasu Sakai said the exhibition “deciphers Toho Studios in the context of an art museum,” and “conveys the sentiments of the times in many ways.”

Godzilla’s lead actor Akira Takarada, now 80, recalled, “One day, I was given a screenplay, with ‘Godzilla’ in black letters on a red cover. I realized I had got my first lead role, something I had been dreaming of.”

Godzilla depicts the imagined consequences of nuclear power out of control and featured special effects remarkable for the time. As can be seen in storyboards, design sketches and production albums, director Ishiro Honda collaborated closely with special-effects director Eiji Tsuburaya to bring the monster to life and work it into a serious dramatic story. The studio eventually produced 28 Godzilla movies by 2004, and is scheduled to release another in 2016.

Hayley Atwell Gears Up For the Marvel's Agent Carter Season Finale

The series' star looks back at the first season and forward to its dramatic finale!

From Marvel Comics

Hayley Atwell wraps up her first season of “Marvel’s Agent Carter” this Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. ET on ABC, bringing Peggy’s mission to clear Howard Stark’s name to a dramatic close!

After a season full of twists, turns, betrayals, and unlikely alliances, Atwell finally has the chance to look back at where Agent Carter’s story has taken her before next week’s big finale.

When she first took the role of Peggy Carter for Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” the star never dreamed it would spawn not only a Marvel One-Shot but her very own series as well. Atwell took a moment to chat with Marvel.com ahead of Tuesday’s season finale, looking back at all she’s accomplished with the character so far as well as what awaits her in the future!

Marvel.com: Now that you’ve reached the end of the road for this first season, how different was the experience than what you were expecting? When you started filming did it end up being exactly what you expected?

Hayley Atwell: I don’t know when I learned [this, but] the lesson is trying to not actually expect anything because that takes you out of the moment and stops you from navigating your way through a journey as you find it. So without trying to sound all high and mighty, I felt that I actually came to it from scratch. I didn’t know what I was necessarily doing, other than what I had done before in the other movies. I set out [seeing] this as an opportunity to explore another side of Peggy.

The main thing that I wanted to explore was the vulnerability and the humor of Peggy, which I didn’t feel there was really any chance to explore in the other films. I wanted to make her three-dimensional and relatable. I wanted to see her flaws, her idiosyncrasies. I wanted to see her frustrated, I wanted to see her grieving, being lonely, and the kind of social awkwardness that she had with other women [who] she couldn’t really get close to them because of the job that she was in and the cost of losing Steve. Those were the kind of things that I set out to explore, and I think, having finished the first season, it makes me feel very proud that the writers took those things on board. They decided to collaborate with me and listen and pay attention to what I was capable of doing as an actor and what my skillset was and based the show around that, if that makes sense.

Red Sonja and Conan Cross Blades Once More in All-New Comic Book Series

From Dynamite Entertainment

Dynamite Entertainment and Dark Horse Comics are proud to announce that Red Sonja, the fearless She-Devil with a Sword, and the legendary adventurer Conan the Barbarian will team up once again in an all-new comic book miniseries, Red Sonja / Conan. Following upon the success of the Conan / Red Sonja crossover released in January 2015, the new launch welcomes celebrated author Victor Gischler as the series writer. Red Sonja / Conan will debut this summer with a #1 issue featuring cover artwork by Alex Ross, Ed Benes, and Roberto Castro.

In Red Sonja / Conan, the crimson-tressed warrior and Hyborian berserker are reunited during an impromptu tournament of arms, a festive occasion that unexpectedly gives way to supernatural menace. The famous fantasy pair -- known for their camraderie in battle, the fiery tension of an unspoken passion, and the occasional rivalry towards each other as respected peers -- must unite to face a horde of demons set loose upon the land. While the events of Red Sonja / Conan take place one year after the continuity established in the Conan / Red Sonja series of early 2015, the script has been carefully constructed to appeal to returning fans and newcomers alike.

"I'm very excited to be working with two amazing iconic characters like Red Sonja and Conan. It's also pretty awesome that two comic publishers like Dynamite and Dark Horse can come together to make something like this happen," said writer Victor Gischler "I think we're in for some top notch high adventure."

Victor Gischler, a bestselling novelist and comic book writer, has written adventures set within the swords-and-sorcery world of Robert E. Howard previously, in the form of a five-issue Dark Horse miniseries called Conan: The Phantoms of the Black Coast. Red Sonja / Conan marks the writer's first time writing the She-Devil with a Sword, although he has worked hand-in-hand with Dynamite Entertainment twice before, with an acclaimed run on The Shadow and its spin-off series, Noir. Gischler's extensive work in the comic book industry also includes two stories set with Joss Whedon's Buffyverse (Spike and Angel & Faith), as well as popular Marvel superhero titles The Punisher, Deadpool, and X-Men.

"Pairing up Red Sonja and Conan the first time was so much fun, we just had to do it again," says Dynamite Publisher and CEO Nick Barrucci. "The two have such an interesting history in comics between them, dating back to the late 1970s, and it seems that more than just sparks are destined to fly whenever this pair of star-crossed warriors meet. We at Dynamite are very proud to work alongside our friends at Dark Horse Comics to reunite these icons, and to deliver the best fantasy comic books ever made available on store shalves."

"We're extremely excited to see Dynamite complete this adventure fifteen years in the making between these two classic characters," says Dark Horse President Mike Richardson. "Dynamite has been a fantastic partner to work with on this critically acclaimed series and no doubt their story arc will be an excellent contribution to the Robert E. Howard legacy."

The new Red Sonja / Conan miniseries is slated for release beginning in Summer 2015. The current Conan / Red Sonja series, co-written by Gail Simone and Jim Zub, and featuring artwork by Dan Panosian, is available for purchase in stores now from Dark Horse Comics and Dynamite Entertainment. Fans are encouraged to look for new announcements on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and Instagram as the latest updates become available.

GAIL SIMONE HEADLINES ALL-FEMALE WRITING TEAMS ON EPIC "SWORDS OF SORROW" EVENT

From Dynamite Entertainment

Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce the May 2015 launch of Swords of Sorrow, the genre-spanning crossover event featuring an all-star line-up of female authors, headlined by Gail Simone (Batgirl, Birds of Prey). Debuting with a core Swords of Sorrow series by Simone, the crossover continues throughout May with tie-in titles including the Swords of Sorrow: Vampirella / Jennifer Blood miniseries written by Nancy A. Collins (Vampirella, Swamp Thing); the Swords of Sorrow: Chaos special by Mairghread Scott (Transformers: Windblade); and the Swords of Sorrow: Masquerade / Kato special by G. Willow Wilson (Ms. Marvel) and Erica Schultz (M3). Subsequent months will debut related projects by additional female authors, including Leah Moore, Marguerite Bennett, Emma Beeby, and Mikki Kendall. The crossover event brings together Dynamite's wide roster of female characters, including the iconic Red Sonja, Dejah Thoris (of the popular Edgar Rice Burroughs' Warlord of Mars franchise), and Vampirella.

Gail Simone, who has been planning the project since her involvement was announced in July, says, "Here's the thing: I love pulp adventure, always have. But as male-dominated as comics have often been, the pulp adventure world seems to be even more so. Most of the big name stars and creators are dudes, and that's fine, it's great. But it hit me... what if that wasn't the case? What if adventure pulps had also been written with female readers in mind, and awesome female characters in the spotlight? That's the scenario we are imagining, and it's just been a blast. The key players are Red Sonja, Vampirella, and Dejah Thoris, but it's such an epic-spanning, world-hopping event that we also have Kato, Jungle Girl, Lady Rawhide, Jennifer Blood, and so many more. It's the crossover I dreamed of when I was a kid, and now we get to make it happen."

Simone's core Swords of Sorrow story serves as the starting point for a new universe of pulp adventure. Illustrated by Sergio Davila (Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure), the series features the supernatural heroine Vampirella, Martian princess Dejah Thoris, crimson-tressed swordswoman Red Sonja, martial artist Kato (from filmmaker Kevin Smith's reboot of The Green Hornet), primal warrior Jungle Girl, and many more. Drawn from a dozen worlds and eras to face off against a legendary evil that threatens their homelands, Dynamite's fiercest females must overcome their differences to harness the power of mystical blades -- the eponymous Swords of Sorrow -- in final conflict.

Gail Simone also serves as the architect for all storylines tied into the event, providing direction to her personally selected team of writers. "We got the best writers around, gave them a fun combination of characters and just let them go wild," says Simone. "It's creators like G. Willow Wilson, Marguerite Bennett, Nancy A. Collins and more, with book titles like Vampirella vs. Jennifer Blood, Kato vs. Masquerade, and Red Sonja vs. Jungle Girl. More about these tag teams will be coming soon, but it's just a ridiculous amount of fun to set these characters against each other, and I'm very proud of the astounding team of writers, who I hand-picked from among the very best of new female adventure writers. There's never been a crossover event in comics like this, ever."

Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite, says, "The prospect of Gail Simone helming this historic event (and I really think "historic" is the applicable term, because we've never seen such a far-ranging cast of female icons before) would have been enough to make the Dynamite team ecstatic ten times over... but then Gail took it to the next level. She proposed to make the event even bigger by creating a tapestry of interwoven stories, a work of art to which many of today's most revered female talents could contribute. What would have been a big event suddenly became a Grand Event, and we couldn't be more pleased with the incredible creators that she's brought together, working hand-in-hand with our editorial team to create some of the best comics of the summer."

Several of the participating writers contributed their thoughts on the event:

Nancy A. Collins, author of the Swords of Sorrow: Vampirella / Jennifer Blood miniseries (illustrated by Dave Acosta), says, "I'm having to play catch-up; I don't have a lot of experience with tie-ins and cross-over events, as the last one was the Children's Crusade crossover at Vertigo, back in the early 1990s -- but luckily, Gail Simone has been a great help in that regard. I think that the Swords of Sorrow event will give Dynamite's core fan-base what they want while helping to introduce new readers to all the wonderful characters the company has to offer." Regarding her miniseries, Collins adds, "Both Vampirella and Jennifer Blood touch on elements I've exploited in my prose novels, especially the Sonja Blue series, which is an urban fantasy with strong roots in crime noir and hardboiled pulp fiction."

Mairghread Scott, author of the Swords of Sorrow: Chaos special (illustrated by Mirka Andolfo), says, "There are few times in your career where you get asked to write a book made entirely of villains (and one tortured anti-hero), and I got to do it for the intro issue to some of the biggest names in comics. I've pulled out all the stops on this one, trading in the morally gray antagonists of my Transformers work for some straight-up evil women. It's been a blast. Swords of Sorrow: Chaos buries you in some of the darkest minds in Dynamite's roster. These are the kind of ladies who are fond of how blood stains look on six-inch heels and they make no apologies for it."

Erica Schultz, co-author alongside G. Willow Wilson on the Swords of Sorrow: Masquerade / Kato special (illustrated by Noah Salonga), says, "I love being a part of a crossover event, especially with these other amazing talents. Gail and Dynamite have put together a really great group of ladies to tell such a fantastical story. I know everyone is going to love it. Having worked on Revenge for Marvel, and my own series M3, I have a penchant for writing kick-ass ladies, and these stories fall right in line."

Swords of Sorrow #1 features a variety of cover editions, including a Main cover by industry superstar J. Scott Campbell (Danger Girl); variants by Jenny Frison, Emanuela Lupacchino; a subscription edition by Robert Hack available to fans placing preorders with their local retailers; and incentive editions by Joyce Chin, Tula Lotay, Nei Ruffino, Cedric Poulat. Swords of Sorrow: Vampirella / Jennifer Blood #1 and the Swords of Sorrow: Masquerade / Kato special both feature covers by Billy Tan, while the Swords of Sorrow: Chaos special spotlights Joyce Chin.

The May Swords of Sorrow releases will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors' March 2015 Previews catalog, the premiere source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market. Comic book fans are encouraged to reserve copies of Swords of Sorrow #1 and related titles with their local comic book retailers. Swords of Sorrow will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Dynamite Digital, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital.

History:

James Tiberius Kirk was arguably the most famous and highly-decorated starship captain in the history of Starfleet. Over the span of three decades in the late 23rd century, he commanded the Constitution-class starships USS Enterprise and USS Enterprise-A, serving Federation interests as an explorer, soldier, time-traveler, and diplomat.

Kirk's Starfleet service through the late 2250s and early 2260s was rewarded with a rapid rise through the ranks. Prior to stardate 1312.4, he was promoted to captain of an unnamed ship. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before")

In 2265, at 32 years of age, he assumed command of the Constitution-class starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), after Christopher Pike. (TOS: "The Menagerie, Part I")

Kirk famously commanded the Enterprise and her namesake over the course of three decades, but it was her historic five-year mission from 2265 to 2270 that made him a legend in space exploration. In addition to his overall mission statement, "to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life, etc.", Kirk received standing orders to investigate all quasars, and quasar-like phenomena. Kirk's living quarters aboard the Enterprise were on Deck 5, room "3F 121". (TOS: "The Galileo Seven", "Journey to Babel"; VOY: "Q2") During this historic mission, Kirk violated the Prime Directive on at least one occasion in order to ensure the survival of the Pelosian race. Years prior to this, Kirk also prevented the extinction of the Baezians and the Chenari. (VOY: "Q2")

Kirk's first major step, attempting an extra-galactic probe in 2265, proved to be a disaster. Discovering a recorder-marker from the SS Valiant that described a catastrophic disaster following a visit to the galaxy's edge, Kirk pushed on, and encountered the galactic barrier for his first time. The Enterprise failed to breach the barrier, and barely escaped destruction. With warp engines badly damaged, Enterprise limped under impulse power towards the Delta Vega lithium cracking station. Kirk's helmsman, his best friend Gary Mitchell, began a transformation triggered by the barrier, developing psychic powers that progressed rapidly, with a commensurate loss of his Humanity. Ignoring Spock's advice to destroy Mitchell immediately, Kirk hesitated until after Mitchell killed navigator Lee Kelso. On the surface of Delta Vega, Kirk hunted Mitchell, only able to kill him with the help of another officer undergoing the same transformation as Mitchell, Dr. Elizabeth Dehner. (TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before")

Following the tragedy, Kirk shuffled the Enterprise's command crew. Lieutenant Commander Spock, a legacy officer from the former commander, Captain Christopher Pike, remained science officer and Kirk acknowledged him as first officer. A new chief medical officer, Dr. Leonard McCoy replaced Dr. Mark Piper. Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott remained chief engineer. Lieutenant Nyota Uhura became communications officer and Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu was transferred to the helm. Kirk did not settle on a regular navigator for another two years. - http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/James_T._Kirk

Go Inside Avengers Alliance: Spec Op - Land of Fire and Ice

It's an Asgardian apocalypse, as Thor's deadliest enemies invade and Beta Ray Bill must save the day!

From Marvel Comics

It’s going to be an Asgardian apocalypse in the newest “Marvel: Avengers Alliance” Spec Op—or perhaps more accurately it’s time to Ragnarok & roll!

With the likes of Hela, Surtur, and Ymir simultaneously invading Midgard, the Avengers need all the help they can get to stave off perhaps the most powerful threat they’ve faced yet. Unfortunately, Thor has gone MIA at the worst possible time; fortunately, he called for back-up before he vanished.

“Avengers Alliance” Producer Justin Wood talks about the latest hero to join the Alliance, how the Asgardian intrigue ties in to the game’s overall story, plus a new Runaway, and much more!

Marvel.com: What is at the root of this latest Spec Op?

Justin Woods: When you launch your game, you’re going to see a conversation between Thor and his father Odin. And suddenly, Thor goes missing. No one knows where he is. He’s not usable in Spec Op 24, and it’s kind of a mystery that needs to be solved. But thankfully, Thor had a little bit of a sense that something might happen, and he contacted his old Korbinite buddy, Beta Ray Bill, to step in and say, “You know what, good friend Bill?” Or…what would he call him… “old friend Bill! Yon…” something or other, I don’t know. He would ask Bill to step in for him to help out the Alliance in the fight against the Serpent and the Worthy.

Matt Wagner Pens The Spirit Ongoing Series, Launching July 2015 at San Diego Comic-Con for 75th Anniversary Celebration

From Dynamite Entertainment

Dynamite Entertainment, a leading publisher in the comics and graphic novel industry, is proud to announce that the all-new adventures featuring Will Eisner's legendary crimefighter Denny Colt, The Spirit, will be written by the award-winning comic creator Matt Wagner. Marking the beginning of a partnership between Dynamite and the Eisner Estate, the new series will celebrate seventy-five years of The Spirit, and its #1 launch issue will feature cover artwork from all-star illustrators Alex Ross, Eric Powell, and series writer Matt Wagner himself.

The Spirit stands among the most iconic and influential characters in the industry with a publishing history in newspapers and comic books lasting generations. Many of the most accomplished creators in the field have carried the torch that Will Eisner set ablaze, including Darwyn Cooke, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Dave Gibbons, and Joe R. Lansdale, just to name a few. Matt Wagner, whose long career in comics has yielded a vast library of critically acclaimed titles, takes the reins on The Spirit for the very first time, ensuring that Eisner's creation endures as we enter its fourth quarter-century.

"I discovered The Spirit via the black-and-white, magazine-sized reprints of the mid-70s. It was the first time that I truly perceived sequential narrative as a legitimate art form, of the immense creative power of a comic-artist in his prime," says Wagner. "I can honestly say that seeing and experiencing The Spirit in my formative years ultimately led to my career as a comics author. It's such an immense thrill and a professional honor to have the chance to contribute to Will Eisner's legacy on the milestone 75th anniversary of his most influential and iconic character."

Matt Wagner is the accomplished creator of Grendel and Mage, a guiding creative force behind such mainstream blockbusters as Batman/Superman/Wonder Woman: Trinity and Batman: The Monster Men, and no stranger to pulp noir, courtesy of his groundbreaking work on such Dynamite titles as The Shadow: Year One, Green Hornet: Year One, and Zorro. He recently set Hollywood abuzz with the launch of Django/Zorro, a comic book series co-written with influential filmmaker Quentin Tarantino that teams two Western icons in an official sequel to the hit film Django Unchained.

"We are very excited that Dynamite has taken on the challenge of bringing back Will Eisner's iconic character The Spirit, along with the emblematic cast of characters featured in new stories and adventures," say Nancy and Carl Grooper in a joint statement on behalf of the Eisner Estate. "It's a huge challenge, given the 75 years of great storytelling and artwork by the grandmaster and a pantheon of award-winning creators. We believe that Dynamite is up to this challenge and are looking forward to seeing this year's issues written by Matt Wagner."

Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite Entertainment, says, "I discovered The Spirit with the Harvey Comics reprint series from the 1970s, and from there, continued to follow the hero's two-fisted adventures in newspaper strips. From the very beginning, Will Eisner's incredible storytelling made an incredible impression on me, and his creation remained one of my all-time favorites ever since. I never would have imagined that Dynamite would have the honor of publishing The Spirit, and to do the series justice, we aimed to bring the best creative team possible together for the series. Matt's mastery of the Pulps made him our top choice for The Spirit, right from the start. What he has in mind for Denny Colt and the rest of Eisner's colorful cast is guaranteed to thrill long-time fans and new readers alike."

Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite Entertainment, says, "When I was thirteen years old, I met Matt Wagner at my local comic store, and asked him if he would help me publish my comic. Fortunately, he had the foresight to say no, in the politest way possible, as I can imagine he could tell that I would be terrible at it. When I was fifteen, I discovered The Spirit with the Harvey Comics reprint series from the 1970s, and from there, continued to follow the hero's two-fisted adventures in newspaper inserts. I could never have imagined that one of my creative heroes would be working with a legendary creator's signature character, and one of my all time favorite heroes. It's surreal. From the very beginning, Will Eisner's incredible storytelling made a lasting impression on me. I would never have predicted that Dynamite would have the honor of publishing The Spirit, and to do the series justice, we aimed to bring the best creative team possible together for the series. Matt's mastery of the Pulps made him our top choice for The Spirit, right from the start. What he has in mind for Denny Colt and the rest of Eisner's colorful cast is guaranteed to thrill long-time fans and new readers alike."

Originally published in 1939 by Quality Comics, The Spirit has long been admired for the ingenuity of its creator, Will Eisner. Eisner's amazing artistic skill and groundbreaking storytelling techniques in the weekly Sunday 16-page sections helped pave the way for modern comic books. His career spanned over seventy years, and he is largely considered as the inventor of the "graphic novel." In addition to The Spirit, his most celebrated works include A Contract with God and Last Day in Vietnam. The industry's highest accolade, the prestigious Eisner Award, is named in his honor, and awarded annually at San Diego Comic-Con International.

Dynamite's new Will Eisner's The Spirit is set to hit store shelves later beginning in July. Fans are encouraged to reserve copies with their local comic book retailers. The Spirit will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, iVerse, and Dark Horse Digital.

One night a party at Wayne Manor is interrupted with the arrival of a statue of Batman with a note stating that Batman will perish in 24 hours. However when they unmask the statue, it is the face of a man nobody attending the party has ever seen before. Turning back the clock we learn that the face in question is that of Herbert Small, a mailman who idolizes Batman, and is stricken with a malady that has made his hearing super sensitive.

One day when doing his regular deliveries, he overhears a plot by a number of crooks who plan on getting revenge against Batman. He notes the faces of those who leave, and after Batman narrowly beats a group of would-be murderers, Herbert decides to get involved. Since his days are numbered, Herbert disguises himself as one of the crooks and reports back to their boss telling him that he's "seen" Batman's secret identity and tells him that it's Herbert Small.

Flashing to the present, Herbert is the one who leaves the statue of Batman with the note, hoping that one of the high profile people at Wayne's party would be able to get word back to Batman who would be able to figure out the clue that he's left in terms of the face on the statue being Smalls. After the party, Bruce Wayne does figure it out when Alfred brings him the mail, and so as Batman springs in and saves Small's life. However, even though Batman breaks up all the crooks he fails to save Small's life who jumped in the path of a bullet meant for Batman. Before passing away, Batman fullfills Herbert's last wish: To see the true face of Batman. Satisfied (and implying that he knew who Batman was) Herbert dies a hero.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Spoiler Update!

From The Daily Beast
Last week, Making Star Wars ran a report from an extra describing a scene in the film he appeared in with original cast members Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, as well as newcomer Daisy Ridley, who is heavily rumored to be playing Han Solo’s daughter. The alleged scene took place in “a hideout for pirates, criminals, and empire hunters,” and featured “pilots, some human, some alien.” The extra made it sound a lot like Mos Eisley Cantina.

Now, a more explosive report comes from Making Star Wars. The blog is claiming that a “most trusted source and friend” with “documents proving” it said that, in a sequence in the film shot at famed Pinewood Studios, Han Solo (Ford) is hiding in the ramparts of The Evil Castle when he confronts Kylo Ren, rumored to be the main villain in The Force Awakens played by Girls star Adam Driver. There, Kylo Ren kills Han Solo before fleeing the scene, while the rest of Han Solo’s crew—Chewbacca, BB-8, and the rest—retreat to the Millennium Falcon. “Han Solo is never in a scene after this. Those are the facts,” according to the source.

From The International Business Times

MakingStarWars.net, a fan-made site dedicated to all things “Star Wars,” has posted a series of e-mails from a source claiming to have inside information on the plot of the movie. It’s worth mentioning that even the person running the site has his doubts about the legitimacy of the information, but he decided to post it on sheer interest alone.

The source claims to reveal the roles of Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher’s characters, as well as who the new players that will set the stage for “Episode VII” will be. Most noteworthy is the source's vivid description of how the audience will be reintroduced to the film’s biggest character, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill).

The now old Jedi Master has put himself in exile after his powers grew beyond the Force. Fearing he would be a danger to himself and those he loves, Skywalker dedicates his life to guarding the tomb of an Ancient Sith Lord. Unfortunately, exile seems to take a toll on our beloved hero.

“Luke, it is revealed, has been experiencing severe mental torture whilst protecting this tomb by ghosts of the past, present and future and he is very unstable as we meet him,” the source says before describing the moment we first see Skywalker. “This Luke is wizened but crazed, his eyes twitch and are bloodshot, his robe is tattered, ripped and his beard is scraggy and his hair grey and long.
