From WhatCulture
Spanning eleven films and five TV series (six if you include the animated series), Star Trek has a vast wealth of stories to choose from. From scientific anomalies to epic space battles, time travel to alternate realities, Star Trek has covered every spectrum of sci-fi.
And throughout these stories there are many jaw-dropping moments…when for one minute everything is turned on its head. That is the art of the true ‘WTF’ moment. It’s not just a scene where something big happens. It’s the unpredictable moment when you as the audience are blind-sided. It’s the moment when you ask ‘did that really just happen?’
And Star Trek has had plenty of them! And a note of warning. I write this assuming you have seen Star Trek Into Darkness.
10. Population… Approximately Nine Billion… All Borg
Star Trek First Contact took an iconic villain from the Next Generation TV series and made one of the best Star Trek films of them all. There are plenty of dramatic moments. The Borg Queen reveal. Picard’s confrontations with Worf and Lilly over his actions. The Deflector dish battle. Data ‘turning traitor’. But none are really drop-dropping moments. Not on the scale of this one.
The moment the Enterprise, on the back of the battle with the Borg, discovers the Earth has been assimilated.
Now sure, it was revealed in the trailer…so you could argue, was it a WTF moment at all? But think about it. After the shocks and jumps of Picard’s Borg influenced nightmares and the epic battle at Sector 001, in which the captain rallies the surviving ships to destroy the Borg Cube…the crew discover that Earth has been altered. As Data utters the words ‘population…approximately nine billion…all Borg’, we realise the Borg have won.
This isn’t higher on the list purely for the fact that the trailer for First Contact reveals this very moment. But from a narrative viewpoint, and playing devil’s advocate for those audience members who haven’t seen the trailer and/or want a great follow up to the epic Best of Both Worlds two-parter (which it most definitely is), this moment flips the entire film on its head. The Enterprise has already lost. Now they have to go back in time to undo the Borg’s actions. Suddenly the stakes seem higher than ever…

UFO spotted above North Shore mountains, claims Vancouver photographer
From Leader-Post
On Saturday morning around 10 a.m., Vancouver resident and amateur photographer Anthony Ellis snapped a photo of the North Shore Mountain. It wasn’t until he got home and viewed the digital photo on his computer that he saw the speck hovering over the mountain.
“I was quite surprised,” said Ellis, who believes the object is a UFO.
Ellis says he didn’t alter the photograph in any way, and the black speck does not appear on other photos taken the same day.
According to the 2012 annual Canadian UFO survey, 1981 Canadians reported sightings, a jump of nearly 100 per cent over previous years. Of those, only 7.5 per cent were evaluated as unexplained. Ontario residents log the most UFO sightings annually, with B.C. ranking second with 20 per cent of the sightings.
Reported UFO sightings generally peak in spring and summer months, with one possible explanation: it’s silly season again.

Godzilla set pics show the monster's path of destruction
From io9
A new crop of photos from Gareth Edwards's monster movie gives a good look into the raw joyful demolition in this Godzilla reboot.
All the classic monster movie tropes are here! Giant monster splashes? Check. Foggy seas? Check. Little kids fleeing their school in adorable uniforms? Check.
This is starting to feel like a real Godzilla picture, lets just hope it doesn't turn into the giant egg-laying monstrosity from 1998.

A virtual Godzilla made quite a big splash in Steveston on Thursday morning, when locals and visitors were treated to a Hollywood behind-the-scenes moment. Using a massive hydraulic lift, a floating stage, a mega-green screen suspended from a crane, water cannons simulating bow-breaking waves, along with a replica of a navy ship, what looked like a monster-sized battle was being filmed by what’s known as a second unit—none of the big actors were on site. The $100-million-plus movie is slated to be released in May of 2014, and stars Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston.

Justin Jordan Talks GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS’ New Direction
Source: DC Comics
Next month, get ready to welcome the New Guardians.
Beginning with issue #21, GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS will come to you from writer Justin Jordan and artist Brad Walker. And today, we’re giving you a first look at this fan-favorite series’ new direction by showing you some of Walker’s stunning artwork!
So where will GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS pick up following the shattering events of “Wrath of The First Lantern”?
“Kyle is asked to do something in New Guardians which will form what New Guardians, under my run, is about,” Jordan recently told NEWSARAMA. “Something that he is really, really ambivalent about. And ambivalent might be putting it mildly. He's asked to do something that hurts him a lot because of the stuff that happened to him during "First Lantern," because of the betrayals that he feels that he suffered. And since his powers are related to his emotions, mastering that is one of the things he has to do. And it's an ongoing problem, doing what he's been asked to do while trying to keep his emotions and feelings about that in check.”
As for the Templar Guardians shown in the preview pages in the gallery above?
“I can tell you there is a reason for the book to be called ‘new guardians,’” Jordan teased to COMIC VINE. “I can also tell you somebody else from Earth will be a supporting character in the book.”
For more from Justin Jordan about GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #21 and the series’ upcoming cosmic adventures, check out the full interviews that ran with the writer in COMIC BOOK RESOURCES, NEWSARAMA and COMIC VINE.

Edgar Wright doesn't expect 'Star Wars' role after 'Spaced' mockery
From Digital Spy
Edgar Wright does not expect to be involved in Disney's new Star Wars films.
The Ant-Man director said at London's McM Comic-Con 2013 that he thinks he was too vicious about the prequel trilogy in Spaced to be considered for Disney's future projects, reports Collider.
The celebrated TV show frequently portrayed Tim Bisley (Simon Pegg) as having been traumatised by how appalling Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace had been.
He also said that he did not intend to bring back the comedy show, saying that people would not really want to see the characters growing older than they had been in the series.
Spaced ran for two seasons on Channel 4 from 1999 to 2001.
Wright will again reunite with Pegg and Nick Frost on the forthcoming comedy The World's End, which concludes the trio's 'Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy'. It will arrive in the UK on July 19 before hitting North America...

ATLANTIC RIM - Amazingly It's About Giant Robots Fighting Giant Monsters
Source: Avery Guerra
Finally something original from The Asylum, a studio known for cheap knock-offs of Hollywood blockbusters. In their latest film 'Atlantic Rim' all the nations of the world join forces to construct giant robots to defend the world against giant alien monsters bent on destruction.
"Pacific Rim"? ... never heard of it. I'm talking about "Atlantic Rim" a movie about giant monsters and robots here.
A huge Hollywood production directed by Guillermo del Toro that has been receiving huge hype for the past two years?
Wow! How did that one get past me?
LOL! Okay I was only playing. Indeed this is another 'clone' film from The Asylum that is an obvious rip-off of del Toro's upcoming 'Pacific Rim' and as I mentioned above it is a non-stop orgy of metal and monsters that looks like 'Godzilla' meets 'Transformers' with a little 'Robot Jox' thrown in for good measure.
However, to be fair, had it not been for "Pacific Rim" this trailer would look pretty darn cool!

Strange Lights Puzzle Residents In California And New Zealand
Strange encounters on a calm night
Sunlive (New Zealand)
One case as recently as this Thursday, of strange lights under Tauranga Harbour upstream of the harbour bridge, was caught on the weather camera and remarked on by television reporters and seen by thousands of early morning viewers.
Another boatie reports a series of strange lights in, and under the harbour, near the mouth of Hunters Creek late last week. There was no sign of a vessel near the lights.
Another astonishing case, involves an astute reader who does not wish to be named (we’ll call him Horace) who is a highly experienced local boatie and knows the harbour intimately. He spends a lot of time night fishing, shooting and floundering and was, until Tuesday night, of sound mind and judgement. Alcohol or drugs were not a factor in this incident.
Horace was in a small boat fitted with electric trolling motor, travelling NE at around five knots across shallows just on dark, about half way between Omokoroa and Matakana Island on a very still night. Showing a single, white all-round light, moving towards signs of what he thought was fish on the surface, he noticed an unlit craft approaching in the distance from the east. It had odd, white dome-shaped topsides and a tall shape in the centre, about 600-800m away. The size and shape of the white hull seemed to change periodically. Horace assumed it was a kayak or paddleboarder, although the size and distance were difficult to assess in the fading light. At times the hull seemed to disappear completely, again he assumed it was a kayak or board of some sort, turning end-on, thus appearing to change in length.

VAMPIRELLA HUNTS ANCIENT EVIL IN THE DEEP SOUTH, COURTESY OF DYNAMITE'S NEW SOUTHERN GOTHIC MINISERIES
From Dynamite Entertainment
By popular demand, Dynamite Entertainment is proud to expand their beloved VAMPIRELLA line with a new five-part miniseries, entitled VAMPIRELLA: SOUTHERN GOTHIC. A tale of dark magic and mystery set against a Mississippi backdrop, the series features the writing talent of Nate Cosby and illustrations by Jose Luis. The first issue will hit store shelves in August 2013, available in two cover editions: an art edition by Johnny Desjardins, and Subscription-Only photo variant featuring model Kitana Baker.
In VAMPIRELLA: SOUTHERN GOTHIC #1, the industry's most iconic horror heroine may not be prepared -- even after a lifetime of fighting vampires, aliens, magicians, and monsters -- for the evil that lurks on the shores of the Mississippi. As the story begins, Vampirella confronts a demon whose blue blade leaves her with a glowing, mystical wound. Heading to the Deep South to recover, she is reunited with an old flame... and finds herself drawn into a murder mystery thick with old time religion and blood, blood, blood.
"The South's my wheelhouse. I'm from Mississippi, and figured I'd bring the vampire down to my home," says writer Nate Cosby, whose critically-acclaimed recent works, COW BOY and JIM HENSON'S THE STORYTELLER, have been nominated for Eisner and Harvey Awards, respectively. "The South is a strange, beautiful, frustrating place. It wears some of its history like a chip on its shoulder, and it tucks other parts of history away. It's a good setting for the noir-ish potboiler I wanted to write."
While the SOUTHERN GOTHIC series stands on its own, completely accessible to new readers, Cosby assures that the tale will fit faithfully into the overall VAMPIRELLA mythos, as pioneered by many of the industry's top talent. "There's a surprising amount of great writers that have told VAMPIRELLA stories in the past. In prepping for this series, I read tales by Kurt Busiek, Grant Morrison, Mark Millar, and many others. What I liked was that they were all different takes on this fun, dark, sometimes-campy character. She's got a malleability that allows creators to take her central vampire conceit and spin off into all different sorts of stories and storytelling. "
VAMPIRELLA: SOUTHERN GOTHIC #1 is solicited in the Diamond June Previews catalog for release in August. Johnny Desjardins, whose artwork on the current VAMPIRELLA STRIKES miniseries has gained him a dedicated following, will contribute the Main cover edition, while fan-favorite VAMPIRELLA model poses for the Subscription-Only photo variant, limited only to retailer initial orders as a reward for dedicated Dynamite fans.

Entertainment Earth Convention Exclusive! When the folks at Bif Bang Pow! wanted to come up with a fantastic Battlestar Galactica 35th Anniversary item, they could only think of one thing – that ridiculously retro lunchbox they had when they were kids in 1978. They bought an old rusted one off of eBay, scanned it, painstakingly touched it up and updated it for today. Now totally cool again and completely licensed, this sensational Battlestar Galactica tin tote measures approximately 8 5/8-inches wide x 6 3/4-inches tall x 4-inches deep. It presents stylized images from the 1978 BSG pilot episode “Saga of a Star World," and the best part is that it contains three exclusive 8-inch scale, retro-styled EMCE action figures of the same characters shown on the box: Boxey, Muffit, and a Tucana Singer. The Battlestar Galactica Retro Tin Tote Gift Set belongs at your house!
Direct from the 1978 science-fiction television series Battlestar Galactica, these 8-inch scale action figures feature multiple points of articulation, episode-specific fabric clothing, and a retro style reminiscent of the bestselling "Mego" action figures of the 1970s and 1980s. Fan-favorite Boxey stands about 6-inches tall and is dressed in a blue shirt, vest, and pants. Isn't he adorable? Good ol' Muffit measures approximately 5 1/2-inches tall in his "fur" suit with metallic-silver vinyl details, and the 4-eyed, 2-mouthed Tucana Singer stands tall at 8-inches in her shiny turquoise-colored dress and matching beaded collar!
In the 1978 BSG pilot episode “Saga of a Star World," Starbuck and Boomer encounter a species of Tucana singers on Carillon. These humanoid beings are 4-eyed and 2-mouthed, with the lower mouth able to generate a powerful low pitch capable of breaking glass.
Battlestar Galactica (BSG) is an immensely popular franchise of television series and sci-fi films, the first of which aired in 1978. Books, comic books, and video games followed. In Battlestar Galactica, The Twelve Colonies - a civilization of human beings in a far-off sector of the universe - are at war with the cybernetic Cylons. The Cylons lay waste to The Colonies, decimating their worlds and populations, and the survivors flee aboard any spacecraft they can find, including the Battlestar Galactica, the only military ship in the Colonial Fleet to survive the Cylon attack. Battlestar Galactica's renowned commander and his crew then lead the ragtag flotilla of survivors in search of a new home, the mythical planet Earth.

Godzilla Goes Nuclear! In Japan As Well As America
Fire From Above? Warheads Locked and Loaded!
From Dread Central
Time for a new image that brings about some technical speculation. We all know that the hottest fire appears as a white/bluish flame. With it you get temperatures around 2,732° Fahrenheit (1,500° Celsius). That being said...
Take a look at this gigantic lighting rig and take note of the blue gels covering the lights. Is this our first indication of the color of fire Godzilla will be breathing in the now shooting Godzilla? Is this an indication of the beast's size? Time will tell. Just some food for thought.

Star Trek: Does a man really need to apologize for Alice Eve's underwear scene?
From The Telegraph
Although the Oxford-educated actress would have known what she was doing in that underwear scene, Katy Brand says she would've also been aware of the fate of actresses before her who had insisted on keeping their clothes on.
Who was it that said, ‘it’s better to beg forgiveness than ask permission’? Well, that little maxim for life must have been at the very forefront of Star Trek: Into The Darkness writer and producer Damon Lindelof’s mind this week when he issued a heartfelt apology for including a scene featuring Alice Eve in her underwear. Needless to say, Alice Eve looks very good in her underwear, but that doesn’t necessarily mean she has to conduct an entire scene in it.
What prompted this mea culpa? An increasing awareness of the gender imbalance in big budget films? It was revealed this week in Cannes that just 28pc of speaking roles go to women. A burning sense of injustice at the treatment of young actresses? A visitation by an alien space Queen (perhaps even a lesbian Queen), to inform him that her armies of outraged Extra-Terrestrial Fembots were coming to get him?

UFO Santee, California? Ellen Henry photo captures UFO over Edgmoore Barn
From WPTV5
10News went looking for answers after a local woman snapped photos of an unidentified object flying over Santee.
Ellen Henry told 10News her camera stopped working after snapping photos at a historical barn.
Henry said she is convinced that whatever she saw hovering over Santee's Edgmoore Barn is not from this world. She did not want to show her face on camera because she said she was still spooked by what she captured.
"I was like what was it doing there," said Henry. "Why was it there? What was it doing? And I said, the next time I come here, the barn will be beamed up."
The barn sits under several flight paths. 10News contacted Gillespie Field and MCAS Miramar, but neither could offer an explanation:
Some say what flew overhead is not out of the ordinary because of what has been reported around the barn.

Pacific Rim Featurette Teaches You About Some Of The Film's Coolest Tech
From Cinema Blend
Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim seems to be filmed with all kinds of cool little universe-building details that scif-fi geeks will go crazy for, but one of the coolest ideas the film employs is the way in which the giant robots, called Jaegers, are piloted by humans. Because it takes too much brain power for one person to control a machine as large as the Jaegers are, a science is developed that allows two pilots to telepathically link, enter a shared mind space called The Drift, and control the giant metal bot. And that cool little detail is the subject of the latest behind-the-scenes featurette, released by Warner Bros.

Dan Aykroyd reveals Ghostbusters 3 plot details
From TotalFilm
It seems as though Dan Aykroyd has spent the better part of the last decade giving updates on Ghostbusters 3, and sure enough, a recent appearance on Larry King Now has given him the opportunity to provide yet another report. However, with a script now thought to be well on its way to completion, there is at least something concrete to talk about, in the form of a new batch of plot details. "It’s based on new research that’s being done in particle physics by the young men and women at Columbia University," explains Aykroyd, when the...

Relax, Star Wars Fans: J.J. Abrams Is Better For You Than He Was For Star Trek
From Cinemablend
So you came home from Star Trek Into Darkness this weekend, and you were a little bit nervous. Maybe the movie didn.t live up to your expectations, and you.re suddenly concerned by what Trek director J.J. Abrams is going to do with his next project . you know, a little franchise named Star Wars. I understand your concerns. Into Darkness struck me (and a few others) as a heavy dose of fan service that somehow still played fast and loose with the canon of the series it was supposed to honor. When Into Darkness opened, I appeared on multiple radio and TV segments talking about the sequel. I ended up repeating variations of this same point: It.s a solid summer popcorn movie, but Trekkies might be annoyed by the tweaks Abrams and his team made to some cherished Trek storylines. (Hint: Khan) Will the same thing happen ...

15 Life Lessons We Learned From 'National Lampoon's Vacation'
From NextMovie
There are few activities more American — and none more excruciating — than a good ol' family road trip across this giant boring country of ours. And the brilliant comedy "National Lampoon's Vacation," which is getting a newfangled 30-year anniversary Blu-ray release this week, sums up those carsick sensations of summer with pitch-perfect gags.
Based on an autobiographical short story in National Lampoon magazine, John Hughes' hilarious screenplay eloquently expresses the universal truth that nothing drives a family apart faster than a long drive together. So with this classic celebrating its 30th anniversary this summer, we're reviewing some life lessons learned by the Griswolds on the holiday road.
Lesson #1: Car Salesmen are Not Always Trustworthy
On rare occasion, an unsavory car dealer will attempt to sell you an automobile not ideal for your personal needs and finances. And all the attributes of that hypothetically ill-suited vehicle come standard in the Wagon Queen Family Truckster.

New Photo From The Godzilla Set Hints At An Iconic Moment
From Bleeding Cool
It seems Gareth Edwards is running around a little, as you do when you are shooting a major movie picture. Just the other day we got a more-than-meets-the-eye video blog marking a year until release.
Today, Legendary Pictures posted this photo on their facebook.
The 1954 Godzilla by Ishirō Honda is one of my favorites, and Edwards is a director I am excited about, so my expectations are high for this one.
Also, you may or may not know that there is a scene in the original that features Godzilla destroying a train line, swinging a train car around in his mouth. Sure, you could say destroyed trains are the norm for cities under attack by massive monsters, but I’ll be damned if this isn’t referencing that scene.

Gillian Anderson expects 'X-Files 3' movie: 'There's a very good chance'
From Digital Spy
Gillian Anderson has said that she expects an X-Files 3 movie.
The actress said that she thinks that creator Chris Carter might already be working on a new script during her Reddit Ask Me Anything interview.
"I would say that there is a very good chance that Chris is in the process of writing it, and as with any creative endeavour, it needs time and space and patience, and I have no doubt that at some point, when it's the right time, and he is happy with it, it will see the light of day, and that will be the beginning," she said.
Anderson returned to the role of Dana Scully alongside David Duchovny in 2008's The X-Files: I Want to Believe, the second movie based on the cult television show.
When the X-Files show ended in 2002 after nine seasons, Carter promised that it would continue in a series of films.

Rumor: Jonathan Rhys Meyers In Talks For 'Star Wars Episode VII' Role
From The Playlist
Now "Star Trek Into Darkness" is in theaters (to somewhat underwhelming grosses), Jj Abrams attention will now move exclusively (well, excluding the dozens of projects in the works at his company Bad Robot -- read about those here) toward "Star Wars Episode VII," his much-anticipated renewal of the Other geek-beloved space franchise. And with the film due for release in the summer of 2015, we should start to hear about new casting for the series, beyond what we already know -- e.g. that original central trio of Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher are returning in some degree. And while it's not official yet, word is coming in that the first new cast member might be an old collaborator of Abrams, as the normally-on-the-money Latino Review report that "The Tudors" star Jonathan Rhys Meyers is in talks to play a role in "Episode VII." Star Trek Into Darkness: Will There Be A Sequel, And Who Should Make It?
From Cinemablend
Star Trek Into Darkness is a hit. Not a giant hit, and not the kind of thing that has studios calling all of their rivals and screaming "Suck it!" while guzzling champagne at 8 a.m. (at least , that's how we picture it), but a big enough hit all the same. Especially when you account for its huge improvement with global audiences, Star Trek Into Darkness has done well enough to keep the franchise alive. which means, inevitably, it's time to start talking about sequels. We were doing the same thing after the first Star Trek came out, but I think we can all acknowledge that speculation is a whole lot trickier now. The cast is committed to at least three films, but J.J. Abrams is now the x factor, running off to direct some other dinky sci-fi franchise and making no promises about how involved he'll be in Trek ...

New 'Anchorman 2' Teaser Puts Channel 4's Finest Up Front
From NextMovie
"Anchorman: The Legend Continues" will host a slew of bizarro celebrity cameos — everyone from Kristen Wiig to Kanye West to Nicole Kidman, so pretty much just everyone in show business — but as this latest teaser from the long-awaited sequel reminds, the ultimate centerpiece of this little shindig will be the one and only Channel 4 foursome.
Yep, San Diego's wackiest news quartet is back, ya'll, boots, ties and all.
And even though scripting, casting and filming has since taken place, teaser number two looks pretty much identical to the the first one we saw last year.
In it, Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell), Brian Fantana (Paul Rudd), Champ Kind (David Koechner) and Brick Tamland (Steve Carell) step forth together with a few choice words of intrigue to encourage viewers to tune in this December when they return to the big screen after almost a decade.
Rather than the sub-machine guns and boobies promised last time ...

Star Trek Into Darkness Trivia
From IMDB
Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman explained that the dilemma for the sequel was whether to pit the crew against another villain, or to have an "exploration sci-fi plot where the unknown and nature itself is somehow an adversary," like in Star Trek.
According to J.J. Abrams, the time travel-alternate reality concept used in the previous film was a deliberate ploy to enable a reboot for new sagas/films: "The idea, now that we are in an independent timeline, allows us to use any of the ingredients from the past - or come up with brand-new ones - to make potential stories."
Hayley Atwell and Teresa Palmer auditioned for the role of Carol Marcus.
Benicio Del Toro was in early talks for the role of John Harrison, but eventually declined due to monetary issues. Demián Bichir, Édgar Ramírez and Jordi Mollà were considered afterwards, before Benedict Cumberbatch was finally cast.
Paramount Pictures requested director J.J. Abrams to make the film in 3D. However, Abrams wanted to shoot the movie two dimensionally on film using IMAX cameras. The two compromised, and as a result this film marks the first time in cinema history that a movie was filmed in the IMAX format and then converted into 3D in post production.
Benedict Cumberbatch was recommended to J.J. Abrams by his Super 8 co-producer Steven Spielberg, who directed the actor in the film War Horse.
Peter Weller previously starred in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, along with former Trek villain Christopher Lloyd; and in RoboCop alongside fellow Trek veterans Ronny Cox, Kurtwood Smith and Miguel Ferrer.
Benedict Cumberbatch is best known for playing the title character in Sherlock. Leonard Nimoy played Sherlock Holmes on stage in the 1970s, and even makes reference to this fact in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, citing Holmes's logic that "when you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." Cast member Christopher Plummer also played Holmes, and also speaks a trademark line, "The game's afoot." Nimoy also recorded a song in the 1970s, "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins", inspired by The Hobbit. Cumberbatch voices the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, in which his Sherlock castmate Martin Freeman plays Bilbo Baggins.
Benedict Cumberbatch recorded his screen test at his best friend's kitchen using an iPhone.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve have worked together twice before, in Hawking and Starter for 10.
Of all the titles proposed for the film, including many joke titles, Damon Lindelof preferred "Star Trek: Transformers 4" best: "It's technically available, we can go there!"
Michael Dorn, who had played the Klingon Starfleet Lieutenant Worf, was contacted for a role during the start of filming, and was asked to play an officer. Eventually the filmmakers decided that "they didn't want to mix the old with the new" and cut him out.
According to writer Damon Lindelof, the story began with deciding whether Khan Noonien Singh would be the villain, and they weighed the pros and cons of him appearing. J.J. Abrams felt it would be "be fun to hear what Alex and Bob are thinking about Khan. The fun of this timeline is arguing that different stories, with the same characters, could be equally if not more compelling than what's been told before. Certain people are destined to cross paths and come together, and Khan is out there... even if he doesn't have the same issues."
The screenwriters studied sci-fi novels by Arthur C. Clarke and Larry Niven for inspiration.
This marks the first time a Star Trek film has shot outside the United States, with shooting in Iceland for special effects sequences.

LADY RAWHIDE, THE COMIC INDUSTRY'S ICONIC WESTERN HEROINE, RETURNS IN AN ALL-NEW MINISERIES BEGINNING IN AUGUST
Source: Dynamite Entertainment
Dynamite Entertainment proudly announces the August 2013 debut of LADY RAWHIDE #1, the first chapter of a five-part miniseries that will dynamically reintroduce the iconic Western heroine to comic book fans. Written by Eric Trautmann (RED SONJA, VAMPIRELLA) and featuring interior artwork by Milton Estevam, LADY RAWHIDE #1 features cover artwork by the preeminent "good girl" artist, Joseph Michael Linsner (DAWN).
In LADY RAWHIDE #1, the masked heroine faces not only the corrupt forces of the government - bent on intimidating the populace through privation and cruelty - but also a new team of vigilantes known as the Sisters of the White Rose. The Sisters, inspired by the legends of Zorro and Lady Rawhide, have taken up the struggle against tyranny. While Lady Rawhide supports their goals, she cannot condone their bloody methods and finds herself facing off against her own devotees!
"Lady Rawhide is a thief, a bandit, a rogue," explains Eric Trautmann, writer of the five-part miniseries. "But she exists in a time and place where, as a woman, society has strictly defined what her behavior should be. Her vigilante, Robin Hood-esque actions are subversive, and her overtly flamboyant costuming rejects those social conventions. She's driven by a desire to control her environment on her terms… and society's encumbrances be damned."
(More After The Break)
Having contributed stories to both RED SONJA and VAMPIRELLA, Trautmann is no stranger to writing strong female characters, especially those that have iconic status in the comic book medium. "Red Sonja will never simper or back down. Vampirella will never admit defeat. Lady Rawhide will never turn her back on someone in need," says Trautmann. "My job is to make sure that I'm delivering the most authentic take on the characters I'm capable of, and not betray those kinds of fundamental, core elements."
Lady Rawhide (along with her alter-ego Anita Santiago) was introduced into the ZORRO mythos in 1994, a masked vigilante skilled with swords, guns, and her signature bullwhip. Driven to avenge her brother's suffering at the hands of a crooked government, she first had an antagonistic relationship with Zorro, but eventually became his confidante and staunch ally. Lady Rawhide's popularity as a ZORRO regular grew, leading to her headlining several LADY RAWHIDE comic series.
Trautmann explains, "I want to capture a sense of fun - this isn't a grim, gritty book. It's pulpy, swashbuckling fun at heart."
LADY RAWHIDE #1 is solicited in the Diamond June Previews catalog for release in August. Joseph Michael Linsner, the critically acclaimed creator of DAWN, provides the cover artwork for both the Regular and Subscription-Only editions of the first issue. Each edition is available to retailers for individual order, although the Subscription-Only edition (presented in a "Black & White Line Art" style) is limited to initial orders as a reward for dedicated Dynamite fans.

ComiXpress Going Out-Of-Business
by Armand Vaquer
They are shutting down after a nine-year run. Thank goodness I have plenty of copies of The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan to cover upcoming conventions and shows until I find a new publisher.
ComiXpress is a print-on-demand publisher of comic books and magazines. They have been the publisher of The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan since 2009. This forces me to look for another comparable publisher.
Here's DeAngelis's message:
When we started ComiXpress back in 2004 it was just a handful of comic book creators with a dream to use new technologies to help their fellow creators get their books into print. We were lucky enough not only to have the know-how to make this dream a reality, but also the passion necessary to see where the road took us. Over the course of these nine years we have served hundreds of creators and printed thousands of books. And from the smallest single-copy order for an aspiring cartoonist not even in their teens to huge convention orders for industry legends, we have sincerely loved every minute of it.
As our nine year anniversary approached we took a step back and looked at how we’ve grown in that time and what the next nine years might mean for us – both as a company, and as the creative individuals who make up the pieces of that company. Ultimately, after much soul-searching we realized that although it’s been an amazing nine years, sometimes things just run their course and we’ve made the decision to close our doors. This decision wasn’t made lightly but we feel it’s time to close this chapter.
On the technical side, we wanted to let you know that all paid for orders will be shipping promptly, but no other orders will be moving forward. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
As we move now to shut down the presses and pack up the computers, we have some thanks we’d like to make. First, thank you to each and every creator whom we had the opportunity to work with. We never felt like your printer; we felt like your partner in bringing your wonderful works to the printed page. Next, thank you to the readers whose voracious appetite for independent, creator owned comics gave us the fuel to get out of bed in the morning. And finally to every member of our ComiXpress crew, past and present. We have always been more family than co-workers, and without exception you helped every day to make the impossible a reality. Go get some sleep and kiss your kids; you’ve earned it.
It really does feel strange to think that we won’t be making comics for you any more, but we truly hope that everyone who has worked with us over the past nine years will look back fondly on us and what we tried so hard to do for the creators.
Thank you all for such a great run, and wishing you all success in your future comics.
Logan DeAngelis President, ComiXpress Inc.

Godzilla opens May 16, 2014 in 3D starring Aaron Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Juliette Binoche, David Strathairn, and Bryan Cranston.

Godzilla takes over Steveston Village (with photos)
From The Vancouver Sun
From a distance, it looked like War of the Worlds had come to Steveston Village.
But the four giant portable floodlights that towered high above Fishermen’s Wharf Tuesday night were in place for the overnight filming of massive monster flick Godzilla.
Film crews had been shooting war zone-like scenes all day Monday in the village and, at around 10:30 p.m., they were busy setting up for a night session on the wharf.

Star Wars Episode 7 - Everyone Has A Plot Idea!
Captain Kirk Pitches 'Star Wars' Ideas
From Entertainment Tonight
Star Trek Into Darkness director J.J. Abrams is gearing up to also revive the Star Wars franchise, and on Wednesday night's Jimmy Kimmel Live, he got some advice from the original cast of both renowned film series as to what he should implement into the upcoming Star Wars.
Host Jimmy Kimmel commissioned fans from the audience to help Abrams come up with a few ideas and plot lines for his next space project. Even Captain Kirk himself, William Shatner, surprised audiences when he stood up to offer an idea. "Captain Kirk. No rules, no surge, road trip of a lifetime," 82-year-old Shatner, who starred in the original 1966 Star Trek, pitched to the director.
Abrams, 46, supported the actor's idea, saying excitedly, "That actually sounds pretty great." Shatner quipped back, "Yes it is, because I wrote it."

Billy Dee Williams gives J.J. Abrams 'Star Wars' plot suggestions
From Entertainment Weekly
Everyone has ideas for the new Star Wars movies! So, when J.J. Abrams stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live, Kimmel thought it might fun to ask the audience for some suggestions for the new sequels.
The first two guys are in costume and both feel strongly that, “Leia and Chewie need to do it!” The second, who we’ll assume works for Kimmel, really deserves our respect. Talking to J.J. Abrams is a nice perk of the job, but not many guys would go so far as wearing Leia’s gold bikini on national TV.
The third “audience member” is Billy Dee Williams, who played Lando Calrissian in the original trilogy. He suggests, “Two hours of Lando and beautiful ladies making love, sweet love, in the galaxy.”

Police called to sci-fi fair after costumed characters from rival clubs turn to dark side
Police were called to a sci-fi convention after a confrontation between costumed characters from rival clubs.
Trouble flared when members of the Norwich Sci-Fi Club were refused entry to a fair hosted by the Norwich Star Wars Club at the University of East Anglia.
More than a dozen Star Wars and Doctor Who fans, including some in fancy dress, were involved in the confrontation on Sunday after a member of the Norwich Sci-Fi Club attempted to get an autograph from Doctor Who actor Graham Cole.
It is understood the two groups had been involved in a long-running dispute and the hosts had warned their rivals to stay away after comments were posted on Facebook.
Norfolk police confirmed they had been called to reports of an assault.

Ewan McGregor 'up for' Trainspotting sequel
From The Guardian
Trainspotting star keen to take part in Danny Boyle's planned film based loosely on Irvine Welsh's book
Ewan McGregor has confirmed his willingness to star in Danny Boyle's planned sequel to the cult 1996 film Trainspotting.
Speaking at a Q&A session following a reunion screening of Trainspotting in London, McGregor said it would be an "extraordinary experience" to reprise the role of Mark Renton, which made his name. Boyle revealed in March that he is planning a sequel that could find its way to the big screen for 2016, the 20th anniversary of the cult film about Edinburgh drug addicts. It will be based loosely on the book Porno by Irvine Welsh, in which the Trainspotting author imagined Renton, Sickboy, Begbie and Spud becoming embroiled in a scheme to raise cash by making a pornographic movie many years after the events of the earlier book.
