Roberto Orci to Direct ‘Star Trek 3′

From Variety

After weeks of rumblings that he was the frontrunner, sources have told Variety that Skydance and Paramount have tapped Roberto Orci to direct Paramount and Skydance’s “Star Trek 3.”

Orci is currently writing the story with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay and had been campaigning to replace J.J. Abrams as director for some time. Abrams is busy with directing the next installment of the “Star Wars” franchise and will only be producing this pic.

Par, Skydance and his reps had no comment.

Plot details are unknown but the cast, which includes Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, are expected to return. J.J. Abrams will produce along with his producing partner Bryan Burke and Skydance’s David Ellison.

The news comes on the heals of Orci and long-time directing partner Alex Kurtzman going their separate ways on future film-making endeavors (although their TV production company is staying intact).

Star Trek Into Darkness Trivia

From IMDB

Screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman explained that the dilemma for the sequel was whether to pit the crew against another villain, or to have an "exploration sci-fi plot where the unknown and nature itself is somehow an adversary," like in Star Trek.

According to J.J. Abrams, the time travel-alternate reality concept used in the previous film was a deliberate ploy to enable a reboot for new sagas/films: "The idea, now that we are in an independent timeline, allows us to use any of the ingredients from the past - or come up with brand-new ones - to make potential stories."

Hayley Atwell and Teresa Palmer auditioned for the role of Carol Marcus.

Benicio Del Toro was in early talks for the role of John Harrison, but eventually declined due to monetary issues. Demián Bichir, Édgar Ramírez and Jordi Mollà were considered afterwards, before Benedict Cumberbatch was finally cast.

Paramount Pictures requested director J.J. Abrams to make the film in 3D. However, Abrams wanted to shoot the movie two dimensionally on film using IMAX cameras. The two compromised, and as a result this film marks the first time in cinema history that a movie was filmed in the IMAX format and then converted into 3D in post production.

Benedict Cumberbatch was recommended to J.J. Abrams by his Super 8 co-producer Steven Spielberg, who directed the actor in the film War Horse.

Peter Weller previously starred in The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, along with former Trek villain Christopher Lloyd; and in RoboCop alongside fellow Trek veterans Ronny Cox, Kurtwood Smith and Miguel Ferrer.

Benedict Cumberbatch is best known for playing the title character in Sherlock. Leonard Nimoy played Sherlock Holmes on stage in the 1970s, and even makes reference to this fact in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, citing Holmes's logic that "when you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." Cast member Christopher Plummer also played Holmes, and also speaks a trademark line, "The game's afoot." Nimoy also recorded a song in the 1970s, "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins", inspired by The Hobbit. Cumberbatch voices the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, in which his Sherlock castmate Martin Freeman plays Bilbo Baggins.

Benedict Cumberbatch recorded his screen test at his best friend's kitchen using an iPhone.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Alice Eve have worked together twice before, in Hawking and Starter for 10.

Of all the titles proposed for the film, including many joke titles, Damon Lindelof preferred "Star Trek: Transformers 4" best: "It's technically available, we can go there!"

Michael Dorn, who had played the Klingon Starfleet Lieutenant Worf, was contacted for a role during the start of filming, and was asked to play an officer. Eventually the filmmakers decided that "they didn't want to mix the old with the new" and cut him out.

According to writer Damon Lindelof, the story began with deciding whether Khan Noonien Singh would be the villain, and they weighed the pros and cons of him appearing. J.J. Abrams felt it would be "be fun to hear what Alex and Bob are thinking about Khan. The fun of this timeline is arguing that different stories, with the same characters, could be equally if not more compelling than what's been told before. Certain people are destined to cross paths and come together, and Khan is out there... even if he doesn't have the same issues."

The screenwriters studied sci-fi novels by Arthur C. Clarke and Larry Niven for inspiration.

This marks the first time a Star Trek film has shot outside the United States, with shooting in Iceland for special effects sequences.

Star Trek's Enterprise to boldly go ... to San Diego?

From U-T San Diego

Suddenly San Diego is the final frontier.

SDSU is trying to build a real "trirecorder." UCSD is holding a symposium in May to answer the question: "Is this the century we begin to build starships?" (Spoiler: Duh.)

And now a replica of the Starship Enterprise may be landing in San Diego next year.

The news was first beamed up by Space.com, which reports a display version of the bridge from television's "Star Trek: The Next Generation" is being refurbished by a group called New Starship. (No word on whether their theme song is "We Built This ... Copy.")

Here's what space.com contributor Elizabeth Howell wrote:

Nothing's confirmed yet, but organizer Huston Huddleston said he is in talks with the San Diego Air & Space Museum to bring the bridge there in the middle of 2014. It will remain there for a year, the plan goes, before possibly hitting the road for other locations.

JJ Abrams talks Star Trek Into Darkness

From TG Daily

Can it truly be a little over a month away before Star Trek Into Darkness finally hits theaters?

Without a doubt, the film is one of the most anticipated sequels in recent memory, and it took a lot of time for JJ Abrams to get all the elements right before he was comfortable enough to move ahead, otherwise we would have seen the sequel out several years ago already.

Nevertheless, we, the fans, are hoping it’s all been worth the wait, and if it takes more time for the sequel to be ready, we’ll wait it out, providing it really delivers on arrival. Abrams recently spoke to Collider about Darkness, and one of the biggest challenges was the logistics.

(More After The Break)

"This movie is so much bigger than the first film we did," Abrams said. "It’s enormous in size, so really one of the biggest challenges was figuring out how to do it. I didn’t want things to be shot mostly on green screen or blue screen. Part of it was figuring out, what do we build, where do we shoot this stuff, how do we possibly realize this?"

By and large the geeks liked how Abrams reinvented Trek, yet Abrams also said, "I think there are a lot of Trek fans who embraced and loved what we did, and had a great time, and there were a lot of others who would maybe call themselves purists who felt like it was not the original series…the irony for me is if you’re a real Trek fan, it’s about ‘boldly going where no one’s gone before.’ I’m grateful for anyone who likes the movie, whether they’re an original Star Trek fan or not."

From Fansshare

Fans of the Star Trek franchise have been eagerly awaiting the release of the new movie Star Trek Into Darkness but it seems that their patience is about to be tested, as they will now have to wait even longer for the official release date of the movie.

While we all thought that we would get to finally cast our eyes over the Star Trek Into Darkness movie on the big screen next month, it seems that we will now have to wait even longer for it to be released, as the release date has now had to be changed.

It has been confirmed that the Star Trek Into Darkness release date has had to be pushed back and, instead of being released on May 17, as we had been led to believe, it has now been delayed and will be released on August 9 in both the US and the UK.

Several Early Encounters With Morag Uncovered By Scotish Researcher

From Herald Scotland

Some of the earliest-known writings on Nessie's less well-known cousin shed new light on the community which lived in its shadow more than 100 years ago, according to the researcher who uncovered them.

Morag, a mysterious creature supposed to inhabit the depths of Loch Morar, in the Highlands, is the subject of three separate writings from Alexander Carmichael, a prolific gatherer of folklore in his day.

The scripts, believed to date from 1902, have been uncovered by the Carmichael Watson project at the University of Edinburgh library.

Dr Donald Stewart, a senior researcher on the project, discovered the texts while leafing through a "mad mixture" of folklore collected by Carmichael over 50 years.

"We were so pleased when we found them, it was just totally unexpected," he said.

The writings paint a conflicting view of Morag. On the one hand she is presented as a mermaid-like character with flowing hair, while another description paints her as a grim reaper whose sighting was viewed as a death omen.

In the first text, Carmichael states: "Morag is always seen before a death and before a drowning."

(More After The Break)

A second text reads: "There is a creature in Loch Morar and she is called Morag. She is never seen save when one of the hereditary people of the place dies. The last time she was seen was when Aeneas Macdonnell died in 1898.

"The Morag is peculiar to Loch Morar. She is seen in broad daylight and by many persons, including church persons.

"She appears in a black heap or ball slowing and deliberately rising in the water and moving along like a boat water-logged.

"The Morag is much disliked and is called by many uncomplimentary terms."

A final description, penned by Carmichael at a later date, retains Morag's association with death, but sees her take on more human characteristics.

Mark And Brian Gunn To Write MONSTER SQUAD Remake

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: The Hollywood Reporter

It looks like the monsters from Universal Studios library of classic horror films have become a red hot commodity these days. Not only is Universal working on rebooting "Dracula", "Frankenstein", and the "Creature From the Black Lagoon", to go along with their recent, "Mummy" and "Wolfman" films, other studios have also decided to 're imagine' these monsters as well.

Last month Halcyon International Pictures announced that they had teamed up with Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine to produce, "Dracula: Reborn", "Mummy: Resurrected", "Frankenstein: Regenerated", "Werewolf: Reloaded and Creature: Returns". Now, Paramount is getting into the act with a remake of the 1987 Fred Dekker horror/comedy, "The Monster Squad".

The studio announced today that they have hired director/producer, Rob Cohen, who served as a producer on the original film, plus Mark and Brian Gunn to write the screenplay. Also serving as producers on "The Monster Squad" will be Michael Bay, Andrew Form, Brad Fuller, and David Ladd.

Recently, Mark and Brian Gunn had penned the script for the "Mysterious Island" remake ("Journey to the Mysterious Island") for New Line Pictures, while Cohen, as you probably know, last directed, "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor", for Universal.

As you may remember, the original film centered around a group of horror movie loving kids who accidentally discover a plot by Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Gill Man and The Mummy to try and take over the world.

Paramount plans to make "The Monster Squad" into a family-friendly film series, though they certainly will run into some competition from Warner Bros, who are presently developing their own "Monster Squad" film, that involves these same monsters as high school students.

For Your Oscar Consideration - Star Trek

Written By: Ken Hulsey

To many of us who follow the entertainment industry, it would seem almost impossible to believe that a sci fi film could ever win an Oscar for best picture of the year.

Way back in 1977, sci fi had what was probably it's best shot, when "Star Wars" was nominated for the coveted award. Unfortunately, the often misunderstood, and often written off as "B" entertainment, genre took yet another shot to the groin, when the film lost to the Woody Allen comedy "Annie Hall."

Do you remember "Annie Hall?".......Do you remember "Star Wars?".........I rest my case.

I what is certain to be an Oscar preview, earlier this month The Producers Guild of America announced their nominees for the top motion picture of the year, and to the surprise of many, three sci fi films maneged to make the cut. Those being "Avatar," "District 9" and, of course, "Star Trek," which to me, was the best movie out of the bunch.

Now here is the question, does "Star Trek" have what it takes to win against such dramas, (normally Academy favorites) as "An Education," "The Hurt Locker" and "Precious?"

Common sense would say, 'no', but there is a growing consensus out there that believes "Trek" has a legit chance.

There are even some conspiracy types who believe that the Academy may give "Star Trek" the prize simply as another way to raise a middle finger at George Lucas, who they seem to despise.

Though, normally the sci fi genre doesn't carry much weight with critics and movie business types, films of a fanciful nature generally make the most money.

In preparation for the upcoming Oscar push, Paramount has created a wonderful new website for those Academy voters to find out more about "Trek".

The site contains the usual studio verbiage plus information on the cast, effects, costume & production design, awards, crew and even screenplay, which you can request a 'hard' copy of.

You can check that out at - For Your Consideration: Star Trek

True, fantasy films can win an Oscar, like "Lord of the Rings" did, but wouldn't it be cool to see a pure sci fi film win?

Just once.....

Written By: April Hulsey

Since it's April's birthday, I decided to post one of her classic reviews from Kensforce.com. This one is extra special to her because the film stars one of her favorite actors, Gerard Butler.

What can I say, she likes the 'filthy Scotsmen'.......of which, I am not.

Another great movie involving time travel. This movie is based on a Michael Crichton novel (i.e. Jurassic Park, Lost World, Congo, Sphere). This movie was action packed and intelligent. However, any time you deal with a movie involving time travel, the believability is always questionable (i.e. Back to the Future).

A group of researchers from the International Technology Corporation manage to develop a teleportation device which goes haywire and ends up transporting people back to 13th century France. Given that they know nothing about the 13th century and the fact that a couple of their experts have been trapped back in time, the group befriends a professor of history named E.A. Johnston played by Billy Connolly (other credits include Lemony Snickett's A Series of Unfortunate Events) to assist them. He is a professor in French and English History. However, he also becomes trapped back in time in LeRoque, France.

The professor's dig site in LeRoque is assisted by several student teachers. One of which is his son Chris played by Paul Walker, his girlfriend Kate Ericson (Francis O' Connor) and Andre Marek (Gerard Butler).

Upon discovering his father's belongings at the dig of a French monastery, he and his colleagues investigate what became of his father. In the process, the team attempts to rescue the professor only to end up trapped themselves after a grenade accident involving a member of the rescue team.

I will not reveal what happens but this movie is full of action, suspense, and romance. Gerard Butler's character is the scene-stealer of the movie. He is dashing, handsome, and chivalrous. He is truly the hero of the story.

This movie is very good and a lot of fun. I recommend it highly. I do not believe it did very well at the box office, but it is good watching

Star Trek Comes To DVD And Blu-Ray November 17th

This year audiences thrilled at the triumphant voyage of the Starship Enterprise and her young and vibrant crew in movie theaters across the planet, and on November 17, 2009, the world will go where no one has gone before when STAR TREK debuts as a three-disc Blu-ray with digital copy, two-disc DVD with digital copy and a single-disc DVD from Paramount Home Entertainment. Bursting with “spectacular action” (Hollywood Reporter) and “pure filmmaking exhilaration” (Rolling Stone) director J.J. Abrams’ sensational reinvention of the “Star Trek” franchise was hailed by critics and embraced by long-time and new fans alike, earning over $375 million at the worldwide box office. Starring a hot young cast including Chris Pine (Carriers), Zachary Quinto (”Heroes”), Zoe Saldana (Avatar), Karl Urban (The Bourne Supremacy), John Cho (Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle), Anton Yelchin (Terminator Salvation) and Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead), the global smash hit also features seasoned actors such as Eric Bana (Munich), Bruce Greenwood (National Treasure: Book of Secrets), Winona Ryder (Girl, Interrupted) and the original Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy.

“I cannot wait for fans of Star Trek to check out the home entertainment release of the film. The behind-the-scenes features on the DVD, and especially the Blu-ray, give a wonderful look at the crazy hard work and incredible fun that went into making this movie,” said J.J. Abrams. “The cast and crew were truly extraordinary to work with, watching these special features, you’ll see why.
