I grant you that the films produced by the The Asylum have been a very mixed bag indeed. The company has heard their share of complaints from fans, who, in some instances, had every right to complain, about their cheap 'knock-offs' of "A" list fantasy films. Their upcoming releases "Transmorphers 2" (Transformers 2) and "The Terminators" (Terminator Salvation) are certain to add more fuel to this fire.
If one thing can be said for The Asylum, it is that they have been stepping up the production values of their 'clone' films. In fact the images that I have seen from "The Terminators" look pretty darn good.
I know what you are thinking. "Okay, so they are making 'good quality' rip-offs, so what?"
Well I just discovered something interesting in their list of upcoming releases, an original film. You shocked? I kinda was.
Indeed, their upcoming fantasy film, "Dragonquest" is an Asylum original......unless this is a copy of a film I don't know about? Anyway, from what I saw in the trailer, this looks like a pretty good fantasy film.
Here is the synopsis:
When an ancient warlord summons a mythological beast, a young hero must complete a series of quests to awaken the dragon that will defeat the monster.
Maybe....isn't that Eragon?.....sorry.
"Dragonquest" stars veteran television actor, Marc Singer, (you remember him from the "Planet of the Apes" TV series and "V" right?.......he was "The Beastmaster"..remember that?) so the film has a least one 'name' actor to bank on.
Then again, if Marc doesn't do it for ya, actress and model Jennifer Dorogi should. You don't see her in the trailer, but she should get some notice from the guys.
I'm not saying that "Dragonquest" will be next "Lord of the Rings" or anything like that. I'm just pointing out that this one may be worth a look.
Maybe we will start to see more titles like this one from The Asylum in the future?

Hey Ken,
ReplyDeleteWhen I scan the racks at my local video store and come across a film produced by Asylum I just shake my head and groan in disbelief.
My brother, sister-in-law, and I actually rented "Transmorphers" once, just to see what it was like and get a laugh. And it wasn't even bad in a funny sense - it was just BAD in EVERY sense.
The only memorable thing about it was an actress who bore more than a passing resemblance to Britney Spears.
I am indeed shocked that anyone associated with Asylum would even have an ambition to make an original film! :-D
