Our readers would have to think back to December of 2007 to remember the last time we talked about the Filipino giant robot epic "Resiklo." Well since that time the film went on to be a hit in the Philippines, also winning the 33rd Metro Manila Film Festival Best Picture Award.
Beyond that, the film really hasn't gotten much press outside of southern Asia. Now, lets be honest, the Philippines aren't noted for being a cinematic hot spot like Japan, China and 'the mother ship', India. However this one may catch western movie fans by surprise. From all the reports that I have heard, this one is a pretty good sci fi action flick. From the trailer you really get the impression that the effects are above average. The scenes of giant robots combined with 'live-action' combat look rather impressive. Overall, it looks like the kinda film that could become a 'cult-classic' on this side of the Pacific.
I have to admit, that when I watch the trailer, I get transported back to my youth, when my buddy Sam and I used to spend our Saturdays locked in winner-take-all games of Battletech. For those of you who weren't around way back in the late 80s, Batletech is essentially a strategy board-game that used robots from several Japanese animated series like "Macross" (Robotech) and "Fang of the Sun."
Now, the only reason that I am bringing this up again, is because the film was recently released on DVD in Asia (Region 3). Those of you out there who have 'region-free' DVD players (like myself) may want to search this one out.
The Story:
2021, the not too distant future. A global devastation that was brought about by an alien invasion has left the whole planet in shambles. In the Philippines, a rag-tag group of survivors strives to survive in a secret sanctuary called “Paraiso”.
Crisval Sarmiento, an ex-military colonel, is the reluctant leader that defends the whole compound from two threats. That of the Mutanos” or mutated humans serving the insect like alien race (aptly called “Balangs” by the humans) and the alien invaders themselves.
Crisval, together with other human survivors soon discover the real reason that the “Balangs” have invaded the planet earth… the conversion of humans to serve their needs.
In order to survive, they must go up against a technologically-advanced alien race using robots they have engineered from recycled parts of derelict everyday machines and military components.
In the midst of this war for human survival, love and faith become the greatest weapons of the human race.
This is a story of the human spirit fighting against a malevolent force out to destroy the only place we call home.
