J.J. Abrams Wants To Cast Relative Unknowns In Star Wars: Episode VII

Image
From Cinemablend Before A New Hope, Harrison Ford was best known as a carpenter, Carrie Fisher was Debbie Reynolds’ daughter, and Mark Hamill was an aspiring actor and the son of a Naval captain. Star Wars put these three relative unknowns on the map, and it sounds like J.J. Abrams wants to do something very similar with Star Wars: Episode VII. Lost and The Lord of the Rings co-star Dominic Monaghan appeared on the video podcast Dweebcast, and opened up about his relationship with Abrams and the director’s approach to this material. He said that, in conversations with Abrams, it’s always been clear that he wants to make stars out of newcomers, not look for massive celebrities (like Zac Efron) who will distract from the story with their presence. Monaghan says: "We’ve talked a few times about it and he said, ‘We’re putting together a cast of unknowns – we want to follow the ’77 New Hope cast because obviously Harrison Ford wasn’t well known at that point, Mark Hamill wasn’

7 Best Sci-Fi Films With Social Commentary

Image
From What Culture It’s shocking that science fiction isn’t considered literary or even highbrow – because it’s certainly raised a few. For decades, sci-fi writers have not only used their texts to predict the technology of the future (re: Prophets of Science Fiction), but they’ve also made strong social criticisms on the way we’d use it. Sometimes these novels say even more on screen. Writers such as H.G. Wells created the masterworks War of the Worlds and Time Machine with messages so strong, one made the big screen twice. There’s no doubt, sci-fi films with collective critiques can reach a broader audience. Read on for some of the best sci-fi films with social commentary, from the new classics to a couple of contemporary favorites. 7. Avatar (2009) 20th Century Fox Avatar offers up some pretty strong social commentary about war. The Los Angeles Times reported the director, James Cameron, saying, “This movie reflects that we are living through war. There are boots on the

Warnog, official Klingon beer launched by Star Trek, with 'notes of clove, banana and caramel'

Image
From The Guardian Star Trek's warrior race the Klingons may be more famed for drinking the alarmingly red bloodwine in outer space, but on Earth at least, they have a new official booze of choice: Warnog, a beer with notes of clove, banana and caramel. The Federation of Beer, a Canadian company who have an official partnership with the Star Trek franchise, has commissioned the 'Roggen Dunkel' style ale, to be brewed at the Tin Man Brewing Company in Indiana. It's their second themed beer, following their Vulcan Ale last year, an Irish Red chosen to match the red planet of Vulcan where Spock hails from. Warnog "incorporates rye malt into a modern Dunkelweizen grain bill, creating a flavor profile that is both familiar and unique," the Federation explains in a statement. "Warnog's aroma is predominantly mild banana and clove produced by the German wheat yeast, supported by subtle sweet malt character from the use of Munich malt. The flavor draw

Star Wars VII 'will return to ice planet Hoth'

Image
From The Week (UK) THE next film in the Star Wars series could include scenes on the ice planet of Hoth, last seen in Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, according to reports. Filming is not officially set to begin until May but Icelandic news site Visir reports that the Star Wars crew may begin work on scenes in Iceland as early as next month. Hoth was the setting for an epic clash between the rebel alliance and the evil Galactic Empire, led by Darth Vader. The battle between rebels and the imperial forces on the snowy planet is one of the best loved sequences in the sci-fi series. Director JJ Abrams has filmed in Iceland once before, recording "plate shots" for the 2013 picture Star Trek Into Darkness, Visir says. Plate shots are background images, often used alongside green screen recordings or computer animation to create composite sequences that superimpose actors or props over a particular setting. If it does go ahead, filming in Iceland is expected to capt

Jurassic World's Stunning, Futuristic Concept Art Just Went Public

Image
From Cinema Blend Maybe you’ve been to Jurassic Park, but are you ready for Jurassic World? The fourth film in the Jurassic Park series is hitting theaters next year, and everyone is curious about the storyline, particularly with the only returning cast member apparently being B.D. Wong of the first film. So with every new Jurassic World morsel comes the hope, and the theories, of what’s to come. This latest peak comes courtesy of Nathan Schroeder, a concept artist who has worked on blockbusters like Star Trek and The Avengers. Universal is apparently quite alright with him releasing these images to the public, which paint a very peculiar picture of the Jurassic world we know and love. These are peeks at the island of Kauai, which is apparently doubling as the infamous Isla Nublar. READ MORE More Stories @ Monster Island News

America's Monster Hunters: BBC Four Documentary to Delve into 'Cult of Bigfoot Hunting'

Image
It is hard to get a good feel for tonight's BBC documentary "Shooting Bigfoot: America's Monster Hunters". At first I was under the impression that it would be a serious program about the Bigfoot phenomena and those of us who try to approach the subject from a scientific point of view. Initially I thought that way, but after reading some press about the show this morning I know wonder if the whole thing may be yet another program that plays off the belief that Sasquatch is nothing more than a giant hoax perpetrated by rednecks, the slow minded, those seeking fame, and people that live in trailer parks. I hope my impression is wrong, but as I said before, the latest press coming out of the UK has me concerned. Check it out for yourself: From IBT UK Edition A BBC Four documentary is to look into the "culture of Bigfoot hunting". Shooting Bigfoot: America's Monster Hunters will follow filmmaker Morgan Matthews as he accompanies three American Bigfo

Ralph Bakshi’s son brings deleted Lord of the Rings footage to light!

Image
From Movie Pilot Fans of Ralph Bakshi’s 1978 cult animation of The Lord of the Rings can rejoice at some interesting discoveries rescued from the cutting room floor. The artist's son, Eddie Bakshi has been rifling through the archives hunting out long lost scenes, and a couple of them are of particular interest. Anyone who has seen the film will vividly remember the scene featuring the confrontation between Gandalf and the Balrog in Moria. The lion-headed creature with the ungainly body of an ape, butterfly wings and a whip paired with a flaming sword for good measure, remains one of the classic renditions of Tolkien’s monster, but there is no sign of Balrog in its worm form. Now, however the scenes featuring Gandalf's battle through the fall in Moria’s abyss and on the Endless Stair have been discovered and restored to their former glory. New "Godzilla" Posters and Banner

Image
by Armand Vaquer Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures have released two new posters and a banner for the upcoming Godzilla . Looking at these reminded me that I detested the green color scheme of the TriStar Godzilla of 1998 with the silly tag line, "Size Does Matter." The new art conveys, at least to me anyway, the serious tone of the new movie. I like these. This is definitely Godzilla, not some oversized iguana. More at Monster Island News

Star Wars: Episode VII Looking At 12 Years A Slave Oscar Winner Lupita Nyong'o

Image
From Cinema Blend Thanks to yesterday's shortlist we know that Jesse Plemons, Attack The Block's John Boyega, Downton Abbey's Ed Speleers, and stage actors Matthew James Thomas, and Ray Fisher are the actors who are being heavily considered to play the young male hero in Star Wars: Episode VII, but now a new story from The Hollywood Reporter has given us some insight as to what the production is looking for in its female roles. According to the trade's sources, actress Lupita Nyong'o - who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress just a few weeks ago for her turn in Steve McQueen's 12 Years A Slave - has taken at least one meeting with director/co-writer J.J. Abrams about potentially playing a key part in the next chapter of George Lucas' sci-fi epic. Insanely heavy security surrounding the project prevents us from knowing anything concrete about both the story and the characters in Star Wars: Episode VII, though THR may have some insight as

Benedict Cumberbatch hints at Star Trek 3 return

Image
From Digital Spy Benedict Cumberbatch has hinted that he will return for Star Trek 3. The actor revived iconic villain Khan in Jj Abrams's Star Trek Into Darkness last year, and the film ended with the character being placed in cryogenic sleep along with his crew, leaving the door open for a return. "That was a stupid thing to do," Cumberbatch joked during an interview with The New York Times. "They should have just blown me up." Abrams will not return to direct the third instalment in his rebooted Trek series, owing to his commitment to Disney's upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII, but will stay on as producer. Attack the Block director Joe Cornish was in line to replace Abrams last year, but has now reportedly departed the project. Roberto Orci will return to pen the script alongside new writers Jd Payne and Patrick McKay. READ MORE
