Actress Emily Blunt is currently in negotiations to join Jack Black and Jason Segel in a modern movie adaptation of the classic adventure story, "Gulliver's Travels". Only problem is, she has already signed on to play the Black Widow opposite Robert Downey, Jr in the upcoming "Iron Man" sequel. At this time both films are scheduled to begin shooting at the same time.
If indeed blunt signs on for "Guliver" then she may have to back out of "Iron Man 2".
In this latest film version of Jonathan Swift's 18th century novel, Gulliver, played by Jack Black, gets lost in the Bermuda Triangle and finds himself marooned on an island populated by miniature humans.
Both Black and "Shark Tale" director, Rob Letterman, signed on to the project last November.

I have to believe Blunt would be making a mistake to back out of a surefire hit sequel to star in an iffy (in terms of box office) update of GULLIVER'S TRAVELS. With IRON MAN's big numbers and good reviews, its sequel figures to be an instant success - even if the film itself fails to meet viewer expectations. While Jack Black may be coming off the success of TROPIC THUNDER, he's not a sure thing at the box office. Moreover, adaptations of classic fantasy/sci-fi tales are dicey propositions with modern audiences. JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH made bank largely due to its 3D format, but what about duds like THE TIME MACHINE and AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS? If her agent is worth a damn, he or she will not let Miss Blunt pass on a big paycheck as a potential franchise character just to play the love interest in a movie with only a 50/50 chance of success.
ReplyDeleteApparently, this isn't an issue of Blunt choosing between the two roles. Instead, it's FOX altering their production schedule for GULLIVER for some unrelated reason, and Blunt being under contract with them to do a certain number of movies, of which GULLIVER may be one. In any case, she's indicated in recent interviews that she isn't concerned about being able to do both. Perhaps the Black Widow is only in IRON MAN 2 for a short time, so the schedules won't conflict.
