With the release of "Terminator Salvation" coming later this year, you just had to know that Asylum Pictures would be producing their own 'copy-cat' version of it. Indeed the company is presently putting the finishing touches on "The Terminators" as we speak.
Fan reaction to the films that Asylum has produced over the years has been a mixed bag. Fans either love them or loath them. Some see them as either tributes or parodies, others only as cheap 'rip-offs' of the originals.
Interestingly enough, some fans actually preferred Asylum's film "Monster" to J.J. Abrams "Cloverfield." Though not everyone shared in that opinion, enough fans spoke out in favor of the film to get some attention and respect for the production.
To be honest, in the early days Asylum's films were very low-budget affairs, earning the company a bad reputation in many circles. That being said, it should be noted that the company has gone to great strides to shake that bad rep. Over the past few years the production values, effects and scripts for these films have taken a major leap forward and it would be wrong to call Asylum's latest films 'cheap'.
Now, to many fans, the fact that the company still produces films that mirror Hollywood blockbusters is something that they will never be able to get around. That is a fair criticism, but if you are truly watching the industry closely, it is hard not to notice that original ideas, in sci fi and fantasy cinema, are fairly rare even for large studios.
Normally Asylum likes to keep their productions under tight wraps and normally don't release any real info til after the film is finished. However, they have been open enough to send us a couple of exclusive production images from "The Terminators".
From these images you can see the higher end production values that I spoke about.
Plot: A small band of resistance fighters battle the cyborgs that have taken control of the planet.
