With the Star Wars franchise returning to Marvel beginning in January 2015, it’s time to get up to speed on the galaxy far, far away with a look back at the story from the classic films! With each installment of the History of Star Wars, we’ll cover another chapter in one of the greatest adventures of all-time!
The galaxy toiled away under the oppressive yoke of the Galactic Empire for nearly 20 years before a glimmer of new hope appeared to aid its citizens against tyranny. Darth Vader, agent of The Emperor and Dark Lord of the Sith, discovered that Princess Leia of Alderaan sought to steal away with the plans to the Empire’s dreaded Death Star battle station. Catching up with her ship over the far-off planet of Tatooine, Lord Vader captured the senator, but failed to recover the stolen plans.
Those plans made their way to the surface of Tatooine through the efforts of two droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO, who on behalf of Leia attempted to deliver them to Jedi-in-exile Obi-Wan Kenobi. Young moisture farmer Luke Skywalker inadvertently aided the droids in their quest, meeting Kenobi out in the desert, but paying the price for his efforts with the death of his aunt and uncle at the hands of Imperial stormtroopers. With nothing left for him on Tatooine, Luke agreed to accompany Obi-Wan to Alderaan and learn the ways of the Force, the mystical energy field wielded by the Jedi.
