Director David “The Rock” Nelson has figured out a way to lower his production budget down to nearly nothing. For years now film companies have been phasing out expensive stop-motion effects and switching to cheaper, and faster, CGI related effects. Nelson has decided to say, "screw that!", and go with real bugs held by fingers, shot against real scenery. This incredibly cheap, and ultimately unrealistic, technique works in roughly the same way as the old "I'm Going To Squish Your Head" bit.
Put your hand in front of your face. Now place your index finger on top with your thumb about an inch or so be below. Now find someones head far from you. Center the head in the space between the fingers. Now pinch the fingers together. Did you squish that persons head? From your perspective it looks like you did right? That's how Nelson's effects work in his two films, "Killer Cicadas" and "Attack of the Giant Cicadas!" Just replace your fingers with bugs and the head with scenery, cars and people.....viola!
For some reason the cable mega-channel, WGN in Chicago, featured both Nelson and his "Cicada" films on their annual B movie marathon this past Halloween.
Here is the lowdown from our very own Avery Guerra, who gets a real hoot out of Nelson's antics:
"Here’s at least some of this year’s Halloween special appearance of David “The Rock” Nelson on WGN TV News out of Chicago, Illinois. He’s absolutely nuts in it as usual, and we get to see a tiny bit of footage from both Killer Cicadas and Attack of the Giant Cicadas! It’s so terrible it’s terribly funny and just plain fun! When The Rock’s involved there’s never a dull moment."
